loneliness , helplessness in todays world are also leading to social media addiction , people are using social media to escape harsh reality .

But using social media makes reality worse, not better.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the loneliness part that affects people the most - part of the problem is that, sadly, it's not uncommon for people to have low-quality IRL friendships and/or relationships (and, for some people, social media is just a placeholder for where most socialization usually goes). For most people that are neurodivergent, ostracized from their family/friends/community, and/or (like me) could have mild social anxiety and trust/vulnerability issues, IRL socialization has often been hard already - so social media addiction can be very likely when people feel lonely, even while hanging out with others IRL.

I am one of those kids who grew up on social media, been on there since I was 14 it's hard being an adult now because I spent so much time on those apps

Children shouldn't have been allowed to use it in the first place. I don't understand why it was allowed.

It is us that are at fault for our addiction to social media not social media itself. We became too dependent on social media for all our socialization needs and we have severed ourselves from people in our neighborhoods and communities.

I quit social media a while back. Best thing I ever did, Strangely enough I felt more conscious (probably because I wasn't being constantly distracted anymore) and I wanted to be more social which is ironic considering leaving ''social media'' made me want to interact more with people.

@@darkvalenzuela8020 yeah, and I never claimed to be those great saints whose life is so much better after quitting 'social media'. I have an insta account, but it's a private one, with only 10 followers as my friends with whom I can no longer meet in person. See? Now you're the genius pointing out the irony. Instagram is not inherently bad as long as you're using it correctly. Why is it automatically seen as addictive, while youtube is seen as oh so educational when in fact it can be much worse than insta, especially because nobody even recognizes yt users as addicts?

For me,researching purpose of the phones and the mobile devices and professor came to our university and they even explained why the Phones are addicted to young children.During high school or middle school,id remember but he said it was really bad for students to even use phones or devices every Time. And he was really right.thats why even I'm at university,2nd year and now I still think removing instagram or even stop using Facebook is the best and prefer not to use apps or ended up like using alcohol except you killed yourself and mental health matters❤

As Sam Vaknin says true love and intimacy is the ultimate addiction, therefore if you are intimate and truly falling in love with your partner, it reduces the ned for other addictions, such as facebook.

I’ve been on my phone since I’ve been 13. It’s been 10 years. Instead of learning a hobby or actually living, doom scrolling. *We rather watch others do something we like than actually do it. Like kids watching adult play with toys on UA-cam* I’m changing that today and will try to learn when I’m on my phone and not doom scroll. This makes me more lazy than I already am and takes up too much of my precious time on earth.

What makes me most uncomfortable about our current trajectory is that most content feeds are becoming increasingly algorithmatized.
I want AT LEAST one feed on internet which is sorted chronologically and filtered by who I follow - that's it. I want at least one feed in which I have total control and free from recommendation.
It's concerning that right now UA-cam is pushing contents I do not follow onto my Subscription feed. They are just desperate to dial up the addiction meter now that ad industry is pulling away from Big Tech.

Oh please! If it’s kids, parents get them their online stuff. They don’t care with their own noses stuck in their phones. Social Media addictive for adults? Obviously they have nothing else going for them. No hobbies. In my day in the 60’s and 70’s, TV was the villain and my parents made sure my brother and I did other things. If we messed up and watched TV when we weren’t allowed the TV would no longer be in the home. Parents use social media for their kids much like many parents in my day with TV as a babysitter. There’s such a thing as an OFF switch. No one twists your arm to go online. Stop blaming social media for your inadequacies and your kids’ inadequacies that you as a parent refuse to deal with.

Phones aren't the problem. Internet is. I'll really be in my mid 50s when my youngest is a teen. 60s when she's a young adult 😭. Plz give me the strength 🤞🏻. What's wrong w/ you? _Slams door in face & cries in pillow_ dude idk. I bedazzled it at least? Most importantly at least u can always call 911. What's wrong w/ me? What's wrong w/ u?! Yw, jerk

The internet is also a problem because parents refuse to get their kids involved in hobbies or take them to museums like my parents did because then TV was the villain and it was free back then.
