Read the reviews! Looks like they were good ?
Along with a box of Blackwing 602’s ... gotta stop watching Adams videos .
I have worked in a hospital for 37 yrs these are the cats whiskers they are about the best you can buy
Get to know someone in surgery or in an invasive lab. If they get contaminated, they have to be tossed. If all they are is opened, our facility tossed them because they are a one use item. We didn't toss clean rags, we took them home, gave them to people. And yes, they are the best ever.
Just went to have a look and the Adam Savage fans have bought all the rags haha
Just yet more proof that Adam Savage's enthusiasm can make literally anything interesting, including rags.
He can describe paint drying and make it interesting.
I never wanted some rags this badly since the Sham-Wow!
Ha!
Only Adam can make me watch a vid about shop rags ...say no to red rags movement!!
I'm not the only one that hates the feel of microfiber rags haha
makers hands WITH excema here. I actually have trouble letting go of such material, its like velcro!
Not only towels. I have problems touching these polar fleece jackets and stuff.
I have to look for winter jackets that have as little as possible of this as liner material.
I hate the feel of microfibre with too much polyester, ie the crappy ones.
They drive me bonkers! But I love how well they clean my lenses.
it's the worst.
“Totally Viable Rag”
Now that’s a t-shirt print.
@@0ValdeCalebros That's the joke
just use the t-shirt
A totally viable t-shirt print
im going to get that shirt lol and i use my shirt for checking oil dip stick so its perfect for me
"t-t-food service rag"
Tea towel mate, it's a tea towel.
I first found out about these when I got my finger stitched up. The doctor gave me the rag and all of the tools he used because the hospital just throws them out anyway. That is also how I got almost all of my small gripping tools.
One of my classmates in college was a former RN and he had all kinds of surgical tools. Clamps, forceps, the lot. Let me tell you, ANYONE who works with discrete electronics needs a pair of forceps in their life.
Oh i need some of those tools, just gonna cut my finger open xD
They reuse all the surgerical tools. The little thracker for bone biopsies are my favorite.
@@LadyTea they don't reuse any of them near me. Apparently resanitizing everything costs more than them just getting slightly cheaper ones that they can just throw out.
@@TintagelEmrys You've also got to figure that when they're buying them in mass quantities, they're getting a fair discount. For you or I looking to buy one of any specific tool, that's probably going to cost more than taking the used one and sanitizing it.
Adam, it does not matter what the subject is, you are so tuned in to identifying the slight nuances between products that you make the path to excellence a way of life. I am so appreciative of your tips and product dissections, both are entertaining and informative. Thanks for all you do, you are certainly in my top 10 list of favorite people on the planet.
When my mother worked the OR many years ago, she would bring home the opened bag of those blue OR towels. Before that she would bring home "Lap Sponges", a super loose weave cotton rag about 11~10 inches square. She had said that anything not used for that surgery that could not be put through an autoclave had to be deposed of, even if they only pulled ONE towel...
You can get a 50 pack up them on Amazon for like 30 bucks so 60 cents a rag
@@N1korasu but when my mother work at a hospital, we got them for free. The hospital didn't have a recycling program. They just burned the unused ones with all the other medical waste.
@@connormccarter9581 yeah I have a buddy his mom is an rn and they have a shit ton of them just figured I'd throw out some info
@@gl15col They through everything out anyway. Its very cool that they gave you the option to take it home!
The reply I should have made is that when things calm down at the hospitals, we might be able to ask for the unused items that they would normally throw away. Maybe we can purchase from their suppliers at one point.
I love Adam's tool tips. I can't always use them myself with my sort of projects, but when I find one I can use they are AMAZING. 123 blocks changed my life working with foam core. I'm definitely picking some of these rags up
My mom worked in a hospital when I was just a kid and we've had surgical cloths all over the house ever since. They're amazing for all applications you would need a cloth rag for.
My mom was a Vet and we grew up with boxes of those blue towels. They are hand and fist the best rag by a long long shot. Having moved out of my mom's house for a while I still miss cleaning with those amazing blue towels. It's amazing to see it's not just me that loved them so 😁
I have one of those woven blue surgical rags that I use to wipe my hands after handling fish on my fishing expeditions. To attach to a belt loop or vest ring, I thread a small snap carabiner through the weave. Works great and can be machine washed hundreds of times!
My parents were nurses in the air force for 20 yrs. Those blue rags were dish towels, clean up towels, hand towels, shop towels, everything. My mom retired in 1988 AND THOSE TOWELS ARE STILL USED TO THIS DAY.
My wife works in the nhs (england) laundry and fetches my any amount of these rags....... best EVER!!! Also sometimes the occasional surgical tool too 😉 she knows what I love. Thanks for all your amazing content Mr savage
I pretty much have the exact same setup for rages. Adam I’m with you all the way with how mundanely but awesomely useful they are for the every day inside the workshop.
When my old clothes are threadbare and full of holes I turn them into lovely new rags.
I also use old socks. I can wear them on my hands so I don't even have to bother holding them.
I do that to my old ripped and worn out t-shirts..
Old bed linen is my favorite
“I used this one to clean the lathe”
**cue dramatic flashback**
I seriously shuddered. Adam tossed the red rag but left that one in the bin...just yikes.
Nailed it on the red rags and! I work in the automotive industry and those two rags are the bane of my existence
andywhtwo000 It’s either red rags or........pink rags at my shop.
Adam’s life is so interesting, I just listened to him talk about rags for four minutes and found it enthralling.
Worked at a vet for years and those rags are great. Another one to look into is the cloth we wrap surgical packs in for sterilization. Really interesting stuff. It's also used for the surgical drape over the patient during surgery. Problem is it comes in huge sheets but they can be cut down. Not suggesting it for wiping up spills but it has interesting liquid resistant or repellent properties but steam and gas can pass though it. Not sure what you'd use it for but you are creative.
Worked at an op shop for years near an industrial area and constantly had people coming in to buy rags. We did 10kg bags of cotton, flannelette and towelling and I learnt a ton from the labourers. About how using different materials to suit the job can be just as important in a rag as everything else. The short version is: cotton is great for fine polishing (and only if it's high quality) but not much else. It doesn't absorb liquids or collect fine particles like the others. Flannelette is best for oil work but certain types of towelling will work in a pinch. Towels are the most versatile for doing everything adequately, best to wash and reuse, but then it doesn't excel at anything and you need to keep an eye on the types of towels you use.
How on earth did I get to the point where i was happy to spend my free time listening to adam talk about rags? At least I'm enjoying myself.
As a former Certified Surgical Technologist, can confirm: I always take the left overs home and they continue to serve me well! If you get them new, I suggest you launder them once before use, makes them work MUCH better!
I owned a gas station back in the days of full service. The red towels were for use around the shop - wiping up oil, cleaning brake backing plates, all things were, if they were contaminated with dirt, metal swarf or grit, it wouldn't really hurt anything. White towels were for washing windows (back then, the service was cheaper than buying paper towels). We used an industrial laundry, so we didn't necessarily get the towels back that we sent in; the color code was useful to prevent damaging customer's cars.
Growing up with a father who was (and still is) an ER Doc, it was a fair chunk of my life before i realized that all rags were NOT surgical rags haha. They really are the best! I'm now an adult, living on the other side of the country and i still have several (ones I took with me to college and then on into adulthood) and I always go towards them first.
News Flash: “The Red Rag Company has just filed for bankruptcy.”
Highly doubtful. I've seen those red rags in every mechanic's shop/car garage/tire shop that I have ever been in.. Those things are used seemingly everywhere.. 🤣
@@BROON71 Exactly! Red rags are not for "clean" work. They're for greasy, grimy mechanic and industrial work. The fact Adam only shits on them for his own use is a cheap shot.
They are fine as mechanics’ rags. But the new ones are thin crap compared to the soft, absorbent cotton ones from the 60’s and early 70’s.
@@laneeric
...right! I have some in the car for when I need to work around under the hood.
@@marcireale the rags got thinner and the mechanics got fatter
Yayyy a new VIDEO to Watch thank you for entertaining me Adamm!!!!
Adam
Another great wipe from the OR are Lap Sponges, They open packs in the OR and often do not even use them, they are soft, absorbant, and super for things like wiping on finished, apply solvent, oils, etc. Ask your source at the local hospital and you find they often just throw them out if un-used And you are absolutely right, surgical towels are the best all around shop towel
John
Agree! blue surgical towels are the best..as an RN bought used ones by the box from my hospital, 10yrs into retirement still using my supply. Bar towels 2nd
choice, also I cut down big towels surge edges...perfect.
Thanks for the PSA, had no idea they we're available for purchase.
Old shirts works quite well, too. Cut them in to sizable pieces and you're set!
There's all kinds of surplus surgical gear that's great to have in a toolkit. Army/Navy surplus stores have entire racks of different stainless steel surgical tools, and most of them are amazing. The best pair of small scissors that I have is meant for cutting sutures, and I sometimes use it for trimming toenails without problems. The best set of small pliers I have is meant for holding surgical needles, and it's easily my favorite tool.
As an ex-surgical nurse I can't agree more! Best rags EVER! You can buy recycled ones on Amazon by the pound.
Another great tip, thanks for sharing
I worked at a company that did chandelier restoration. It was in the basement of the owners house. Next door lived a lady that worked in the medical industry and we would buy those blue rags (cleaned of course) for a couple bucks a bundle. Best damn rags ever!!!
My dad was a surgeon. I have a few of these rags that he brought home (unused) for use around the house. Plus some damned nice hemostats.
The amount of old t-shirts, t towels, even have some old soft leather ones, the fluffier side of the leather is great for windows and mirrors it doesnt streak lol
Adam, we're basically the same age - I turn 50 this year - but you are still my maker daddy when it comes to this kind of thing. 😂 Who even knew used surgical towels were a thing? And thank you for completely absolving me of my aversion to microfiber towels. I thought I had no other option!
Hes your makers daddy? Thats super sus I'm not gonna front lmao
Home cut rags from denim jeans are my staple & new terry cloth kitchen service towels
I have one blue surgical towel that I've had forever and I use it for when I paint on canvas to clean my brushes on and it's the perfect towel
red rags are for rough, mechanic type work to be laundered via industrial processes. They work fine for that purpose
That's what I use as a commercial/industrial HVAC mechanic they work great and dirt cheap for a box of 50. The blue ones are a bit better but there's really not that much difference and they are just as cheap.
Great start to the morning. i also have a collection of rags :)
I’m studying at Ferris State University to be a Plastics and rubber engineering tech and we buy rags made from cut up t shirts in huge hay bale sized packages to clean the injection molding machines because we use them so often
I concur my mother used to bring them home from the hospital she worked at and I still using to this day
Watching Adam geek out over relatively random stuff is kinda adorable.
As the son of a physician, I grew up with those. I had no idea regular people knew about them!
Adam Savage. The man is so awesome he can even make rags seem exciting.
When I was a kid back in the 60's we had boat loads of towels in the house that had "OR" stitched on them. My mom way back when, used to be an OR nurse and in the Operating Room Adam is absolutely correct, they did not reuse the towels once they were used. They had them cleaned and then they used them for other stuff. The OR staff always seemed to get as many as they wanted. They had so many of them. I'm not really sure what they did with the surplus. If memory serves me correctly they were donated somewhere, I'm just not sure where.
I only use the red rags for cleaning up oil/grease as they are oleophylic. Also, mixing a little bit of soap into one and wetting it works great for getting hard grease/oil off of your skin.
Glad I am not the only one that has a problem with the microfiber towels. Thanks
We use those in the window cleaning industry, we call them “huck towels” and they are truly a great towel 👍
I love the blue surgery towels ,,, can't have enough of them !
Truth! Love the blue rags!!!
I agree about the red rags. I've also had the red rags come with some sort of seed or slag in it that scratches things. The only thing they are good for, in my opinion, is fanny flags. In the pottery studio, the larger white terrycloth ones (like you threw off camera) are hugely useful. Large enough to throw over my shoulder and still have enough to wipe my muddy hands on.
I did not think you were gonna be able to get me to watch a whole video about rags but you did it lol great job keep being you
Haha this was absolutely the video I was looking for and thanks for making it so fun to earn about rags!😂😂🙌🏽 I learned so much, and passing it on like I know what I’m talking about!😂
I use the them too, my wife was going thru cancer treatment and they would use those rags for a sterile place to keep some of the tools and needles and stuff in and I would always keep them !
We buy a box of rags that's from Buffalo Industries at one of our local hardware stores, it's literally just various cotton type t-shirts. We use them all the time, and we also have a bunch of microfibers, though we generally don't use those for really dirty things.
"Tough-as-nails, super absorbent mofo of a towel" That should be on the label! Love It!!!!!
I love the last shot when he pushes he table at the camera. Lol. So Adam. “You thought that table was stationary! Ha! Think again son!”
He's spot on about red rag residue. But I'm a mechanic and have tons of em.
I've been using tea towels from ikea as my rags! I've got a stack of them folded on my dresser/workbench
I LOVE when you find tools from completely unknown sources that work better than the standard stuff
I am a rag connoisseur myself as well. I buy microfiber and terry cloth. I also use cut up clothes that I don’t want for really extreme jobs such as cleaning wax off of things. Surgical rags, now that is something I’ve never considered. Looks like I’ll be asking around.
I've been looking for better low lint rags for cleaning glass, I will have to try the surgical towels!
I heard about these literally 1 week ago and I found a place that sells hospital rags; 15 lbs for $15 at an old mom and pop linen supply store
Adam as I have said before I was a truck driver I needed some of the red rags to deal with so I hacked a plan the mechanics left these rag everywhere and they were lost so I collected about 50 bagged them and gave them to one mechanic in trade for 25 clean rags soon I had recovered a lot of the missing rags I had 100 clean red rags on my truck. And swapped these out 1 for 1. I work on guns now and still use them. While driving I picked up a full load of new red rags at a diaper laundry service the would buy the white rags dye them red or blue and package them for COSTCO and SAM’S.
OMG I'm glad someone else has the microfiber issue and I use the same comparison - nail on chalkboard! I did not think this was going to be a video that pertained to me lol.
I'm right there with you Adam with the microfiber rags, I'd rather have dried wood putty under my fingernails than the feeling of microfiber rags in my rough skinned grip.
The bug flying across 😂 00:52
I missed the "old t-shirts not suitable for pj's nor mop" kind of rag. My most common, btw XD
Thats a ragtag team of rags you got there, Adam!
Just bought some surgical towels for my makeup station. 👍👍🤗🤗
Yay! I have a bucket of shop rags
I use surgical rags as kitchen towels. They are fantastic!
I’m a nurse and anytime there are leftover surgical towels I bring them
Home. I have to agree they are the best
We tear hydraulic machine apart and put them back together where I work. We use what are called Mill Ends. They are pieces and parts from textile mills, like T-Shirts. They make good rags and there is not lint to get stuck in the hydraulics.
Great video sir!
Adam, I've been using a 10-pack of my 23 yr old's cotton nappies (diapers to non-Aussies). Don't worry they were brand new when I discovered two packs still in plastic about 10 years back. About 24 inches square, soft enough and absorbent. Some look pretty rough now but still work fine. I'm saving the 2nd pack of 10 for my retirement or her wedding, whichever comes first. (why did I have new cotton diapers,,, about 6-months in we discovered these new-fangled disposable versions and we switched INSTANTLY 💩💩💩👍
love how it snows in the shop
Have you tried the smooth microfiber towels? They're sold as gym towels and they're pricey but worth every penny. Smooth and soft amd so absorbent. They're sold as gym towels or beach towels and are also available in the same wonderful blue
thanks
Just caught the new Boston Dynamics video with you. I pretty much implicitly trust any video with your trademark enthusiastic "DUDE!" :-P
Yeah, I’m a rag nerd too.
I’ve got wipe down, rough polish, fine polish, for glass, for grease/oil, standard scrub clean etc...
Friends don’t let friends use red (or blue) standard shop towels. They are the worst.
OMG!, I have been getting these for free for years. Once opened in OR, they can’t use the unused packs. We also donate to vet hospitals and spca. Had no idea they were on amazon. The reviews are horrible but I love them.
Thanks,
i learned the thing about the red rags the hard way there are things in my house now in particular some vintage game consoles that are lightly stained red because of them
The close up of the blue rag reminds me of bar towels.
Thanks just bought 12 to try
If you clean the laity with one of the surgical towels you can also wrap them around lost limbs.. if needed ..
never throught of rags having that much variety and uses
I just buy cheap white towels and wash cloths at Sam's Club. I also staple the large towels to my workbench, where they absorb spills, keep small parts from bouncing away, and make it easy to see the parts.
got to love a Rant on Rags.....
Have you used flour sack cloth towels? Simply the best.
I love microfiber cloths,I use them for cleaning everything
Adam, could you please do a video (if you haven't already) on dust collection. I have a small shop in my garage with a shop vac for dust collection hooked up to my table saw and it's not perfect.
2004 : 7 year old me watching Mythbusters saying Adam savage is my Hero 2020 : 23 year old me watching UA-cam saying "Adam Savage ....damn that dude still my hero "
its ok Adam i love the smell of work shop and machine oil to lol.
That reminds me, I’m completely missing any rags from my workshop! Well, mostly. And they’re hidden away.
Love watching ur channel, your hole shop is a Man's Man Cave that would make anyone jealous lol , watched you awhile back build a scratch built space ship you ever thought bout building one that you would love to fly if it were real ?
