Sorry for ruining it for everybody. I promise I'll close my eyes next time.
>:(
Yer he got me out as well 😅
And me. Luckily the "in America" got me off the hook.
This is why we can't play Werewolves!
Really glad it wasn't just me
I'm sorry. When you called out Steven I thought for sure it was just a gag and then... Well I'm sorry everyone.
>:(
you blew it, James
I have never felt so called out in my life.
I scrolled down after he said that to look for the suckers. Right when I click thumbs up.....instant shame as he calls me out too....
@@MrKing0fTown See? You were busy looking at comments when you should have had your eyes closed!
It was with a 'v' you are in the clear.
c'mon Stephen you're killing the vibe here
A Fake Artist Goes to New York is my drawing game of choice; at one new year's board game spectacular, I brought a new calendar and markers and we created twelve awful collages for everyone to take home.
It’s my favourite because it’s the only drawing game I know that doesn’t disadvantage bad drawers
If you have the opportunity to use a whiteboard and play the variant they made up at the Polygon youtube channel, I highly recommend it. In fact, if you're a teacher with a well-supplied classroom you probably have all the necessary components. You can find a spreadsheet with categories online.
I can't see how anyone wouldn't recognize the Queen in that wonderful drawing! It's so faithful and realistic it could pass for a photo.
she's resting in a bit of cheeky piss now
Vlaada Chvatil is my favorite board game designer, and I've had Pictomania on my radar for awhile without even noticing he was the creator of it.
You sound like someone who I would like to meet at a coffee shop and play tash kalar with.
...this is the highest compliment I can give.
@@ValdiosBlaster I have not tried that one, but it looks fun.
@@007Kiristo I own both, along with Codenames, and they are all wonderful. To me, the defining feature of a Vlaada game is that there comes a moment in each game where someone at the table, looking at their own board/cards/etc., breaks down laughing at an absurdity known only to them.
I wish you had a team member like Ava dedicate their time to reviewing older games. I love every time I hear them go on about games like glass road on the podcast, etc. Plus I think it’s important for to have someone cover games the original shut up and sit down crew either missed or weren’t fans of. It creates a good baseline for each review to follow as well. Plus I’m sure it’s easier to write a script about something you love. Lol, no clue why I felt the need to comment that here, but just a thought about content I would enjoy watching.
Please take a look at Subtext everyone, it’s Decrypto but with drawing and Dixit voting. IMO it’s “award-winning designer” Wolfgang Warsch’s best game, and I own four other ones
You made my peripherally-watching 5 year-old chortle darkly with pushing-off-table humor. A fine move sir.
I hope you're ready to have that joke reenacted poorly, and repeatedly, for weeks. :D
Pictomania is fantastic. The "failure cascade" feature is real.
Completely agree. I’ve taught this game to non gamers and they love it. Teach isn’t so bad
I nearly cried when Quinns shouted at me for not closing my eyes. HE CAN SEE MEEEEE 😫
Amazing as always
Also, something that may get taken for granted but the B roll and background plants in this video are super nice on the eyes
I just donated half my games and another SU&SD video comes out. Touché my friends
I taught Pictomania to my parents and they got it immediately and it's one of their favorite games! (Well maybe not immediately but within a round or two.) The upkeep part may be a little fiddly, but you can work people through that as they're doing it. As long as they understand the (much simpler) real time drawing-and-guessing rules you can just let people loose to enjoy.
Surprised that Scrawl didn't get a mention, it is probably my favourite drawing game though it is for adults and maybe not something to play with your family.
In Fake Artist I *love* how you not only have to draw as if you know what you're drawing, but also need to act and laugh as much as everyone else at how badly the others are drawing whatever they're drawing! (big tell if everyone is laughing and you sit there silent with your brain melting over which word it is). Nothing is more fake than my laughs in Fake Artist! :)
Man, I love this channel. The jokes are good, and the reviews are more like analyses, and I love it.
Now I'm gonna wonder the story behind why that picture is one of Quinns sneakiest victories, what did he do?
"pictomania answers the question: what if pictionary had the adrenal desperation of the movie uncut gems" my sides oh my god
I really like the intro with the skit with your friends. It feels like you guys just had a great time filming. Hope you do it again!
I played Pictomania with my family once, and they're not super board gamers, but you can hit this incredible mental ascension where your right hand is drawing on your sheet under the watchful gaze of your right eye, while your left hand and eye are gazing over the table distributing points at the same time, your brain having split perfectly in half. Your family finally having respect for you as you clean up the board winning everything and they all say "wow, this kid's got some maneuvers" and then you get some kind of brain cramp and it all goes wrong.
I'm never playing games with James or Steven again.
I don't think I can properly convey how much I love these reviews. But I'll try anyway. Sometimes, I feel like I have more fun watching these reviews than playing the games you review... Thank you guys for all that you do!
Never realised that there were 6 cards used in the 1st edition as I’ve only played the 2nd edition where only 3 are used.
Every SU&SD review I go "ok, I know I'll probably enjoy this review regardless of I'm interested in the game." And usually about 60-90 seconds in, my suspicions are confirmed, I will enjoy this lovely video, thank you very much.
I loved that little bit where Quinns rotated the plant about a minute in because it was in the way of his wild gesticulating
Im not a fan of drawing games, and though these sound fine, i remembered seeing that monster game, and thinking my weirdo friends would like that one best. Thank you for helping me remember it, and recommending it so i can add it to my list of good candidates to battle it out for a spot in my library ❤😊
Thanks for nothing Steven and James!
trust no one
just echoing the folks saying telestrations/eat poop you cat is the most fun drawing game. very different vibe from the games featured here and it's best if you just ignore most of the competitive elements, but it's always fun and funny. some of my favorite game playing memories
It's been so long since we've seen b-roll f them playing the game with other people irl 🥰
Nice vid! I'm in love with these kind of drawing games!
my favorite party drawing game is telestrations. its fun to make your own words and inside jokes for people to draw.
Picked up pictomania at a thrift shop recently. It really surprised me how much I loved it. It’s also one of the few party games that works well at 3p.
Pictomania is definitely one of those games where I start by saying "This will sound like the most complicated thing ever, but two rounds in you WILL be enjoying yourself"
I can really recommend the "drawing" game "Pix" (don't know how hard it is to come for the english language version, but the german version is near impossible to find for somewhat cheap (Pixelstücke)). You basically have "teams" (not really) and draw your words as pixelated images. The person on the team that used the least pixels for their drawing can show their results first, but probably has the most vague image. It's quite a lot of fun when you look at your teammates drawing and go like "we do have the same word, don't we?" or "you do know what that word means, don't you" in total confusion as to what they created.
I'm surprised there's no mention of Telestrations. Assuming there's at least 5 people it's my go to party game.
Thank you reminded me that I have pictomania in my collection. The christmas I got it was such a great time. 😀
And it is so relaxing, when you review a game that is already in my collection. There is no want to buy the game immediately 😅
Telestrations is my groups favorite drawing game. The pictures always devolve in to rude scenes of horror!
i just don't understand how quinns has mastered the gormless smile
The uncut gems reference seems apt lol
Worth mentioning in case people use this video to learn Pictomania: Quinns explained scoring correctly, but the shot at 7:12 is incorrect. When you're evaluating who guessed your drawing, you flip over the entire stack of guesses (so the person who guessed first is now on top), then go through it one by one with the first correct guess getting the most points, and so on. This ensures the person who correctly guessed your drawing earliest gets the most points. Great video though!
Pictomania is great and I've had a lot of fun with it. I will say that it does suffer from a very minor "problem", if you're taking the points seriously, whereby if some people around the table know each other better and are on the same wavelength it becomes obvious that one of them is going to win. I had this when playing with my brother and a bunch of friends, we could almost immediately guess each other's drawings from just a few lines. Everyone still had a great time though.
Pictomania is brilliant and is my family’s drawing game of choice. Like Just One, once you’ve played a round it clicks. My children 9 year old and 10 year old love it. Some of the clue cards are too unfamiliar for them to draw but we just check the clues and agree that all are understood before the round.
Telestrations gives much laughter too! Specially with bad drawers/guessers like me and my group!
Anyone know the artist that did the hot air balloon painting on the wall behind Quinns? I'd sure like to look into getting one for myself!
I’d love to play Doodle Dash. But still can’t buy a copy anywhere! Drawing sad face…
Ahh! i'm sorry! i'll close my eyes!
"Stephen in America!" 😳
Damnit James and Steven!
Ha! the P.G.T. eh? I called it the "Goldenrod" in my video xD Glad to see you loved it too!
That time that I ruined it for everybody
When you know its a video, and definitely a bit... but you play along anyway...
Have you tried Doodle Rush? Its somewhat like Pictomania in terms of intensity, but a lot simpler and quicker. I probably prefer Pictomania with hardcore gamers but it's a good alternative that can be played with family
Doodle Dash might replace Telestrations as my party drawing game. The only downside is that it seems like it's hard to make your own prompts, unlike telestrations.
Telestrations is always good fun, and it's always hilarious on how messed up the final prompt always gets.
Quinns chose that shirt to fit in with the picture of his relatives at 10:44! 😂
If both games have cards with 7 prompts, buy both, use the best prompt cards in either?
:0
That would definitely work with a while bunch of Pictomania's cards! Someone would just have to go through the Pictomania decks first and then just... forget what they saw.
Not tried Doodle Dash yet, but Pictomania is one of my favourite games of all time. I like to describe it to people as NOT a drawing game, but a communication game. Good artists tend to be too literal and slow, it's all about how you can communicate a concept quickly and accurately, no matter how simple your artistic skills are.
What I love about Pictomania is particular is how great and elegant the ruleset is. There's no way to "game" the system. You simply win by drawing fast and accurately and guessing fast and accurately.
love you guys! also love my official SUASD shirt :)
I was closing my eyes Quinns! Okay, so maybe I had them open for a half-second while I adjusted my headphones, but that shouldn't count!
(I actually was going along with the bit, and I really did open my eyes for a second, so it was very funny and surreal being called out like that)
I closed my eyes, and for a split second there, it was a new The Opener..
I miss The Opener.
Sounds like a game where the point tally at the end resembles an episode of QA
you had me a "gut bustin' ridiculous"
I feel like pictomania with a dice and the totem from jungle speed will be pretty nice.
And damn it James, you always f it up for everyone. Go home James, who invited you to boardgame night anyway.
Was it Steve? Who’s friend is Steve, I always wondered how you got into the group.
First time I've been directly called out in a youtube video. What an odd feeling :)
My favorite drawing game is Telestrations.
Stephen in Canada here, I have a ligitimate medical condition that I cant ever close my eyes.
What about a SUSD doodle dash prompt expansion??
I'm Stephen, in America, I was peeking and I am so glad that I wasn't high while watching this
You just invented a beautiful reaction gif of Christ holding his... toilet?
*Chris..............
Doodle Dash is so close to being really good. I found it works much better when you just make your own prompts.
I love Pictomania, both playing it but also from a game design point of view. Every single rule in it, you can look at and go "ah, this is the fix for *that* problem in Pictionary." It feels like the perfect example of Chvatil's brilliance as a designer.
I wasn't such a fan of A Fake Artist Goes to New York the one time I tried it - throughout the game I felt like I'd rather be playing either one of Pictomania or Spyfall rather than the cross between the two - but I can see why people would like it, and maybe it was just a one-off and I'd re-evaluate it if I played it again.
The people watching this video in my household were a Stephen and James from America. Very creepy
Jim! Steve!
I should play more drawing games.
After all these years, he's still got it, damn it!
Genuinely opened my eyes to pet my dog. felt my blood run cold instantly.
You got me. What wizardry is this?!
I wish someone had read The Tortoise In the Hare to me as a child. I would have better understood who I am so much sooner.
Pictomania… my buddy and I bought it couple months ago… nobody liked it, everybody despised it… please watch a playthrough first guys, before you buy that
The designer names for Doodle Dash are like that because there are four: Two for each last name.
Weeks earlier:
"... how can I get footage of Chris Bratt proudly holding an inept drawing of a toilet? Maybe if I tell him it's for b-roll on a board game review...? But then to maintain the story I'd have to actually publish a review..."
0:59 pro plant swivel move
I'm enjoying this new era of "brushes his hair" Quinns
Yeah the second one was my bad, I got a bit busy is all.
How did you know I wasn't closing my eyes? :-O
Woah, now that was embarrassing. I wasn't closing my eyes...
I like Telestrations. It's like Pictionary and telephone at the same time!
Thats creepy I wasent closing my eyes the second time.
Unsolicited (and as yet untested) drawing game, Pretentious Phartists:
Start play by having everyone rapidly draw 6 "artsy fartsy" pieces onto index cards (or blank playing cards, if you're rolling in monies). 20 seconds per, at most.
Mix them all together. Everyone blindly draws five cards, openly displayed hands. Four more cards are displayed, mid table.
If it's the turn of the person to your left, say "It's (dismissive adjective)"
If the person to your left just dismissed something, add your own (unique) "It's (adjective)"
If you are the person to the right of the person whose turn it is, and you just said something snarky/dismissive, add "And I hate it!"
On your turn do one of the following:
1 - Trade a card from your (openly displayed) hand for one in the middle of the table....
2 - Explain how all five of your cards are absolutely a matching set, CLEARLY belonging together, and why...
Or 3 - Take long enough that the person to your right has said "And I hate it!"
First 'artist' to collect a matching set that doesn't make everyone else at the table curse, roll their eyes, or threaten to never play again wins.
Keep the cards. Next time around, make more but add them in the existing pile.
Whenever a game's prompts aren't good enough, just use Cards Against Humanity cards
If only Monsdrawcity was actually available...
Can't find where to buy Doodle Dash anywhere !
You need to play Wee Whimsical Creatures
Wait didn’t you guys review pictomania a few years ago?
www.shutupandsitdown.com/review-pictomania/ yes we did, but now it is in video format with more games to compare it against.
Have you tried Subtext by Wolfgang Warsh?
Steven here. Sorry guys. I didn't mean to.
I was called out by a man from the past for my actions in the present. Strange feeling.
6:34 I can't even...
I wonder where the Vladaa altar is now.
DANGIT STEVEN! YOU TOO JAMES!
What about Doodle Dash with Pictomania cards?
Goooood question!
