I still have mine. But, it's definitely not in great condition. 33 years have not been kind. Both main gun joints broke, so I can't display it in anything other than "robot" mode. And, same problem you had, the arms fall off. And, of course, it's yellowed quite a bit. The Bandai version had missile launchers on the "legs", as you pointed out, and also on the main guns (hence the holes). There is also a large compartment on the front (top, in ship mode) that was used for missile storage.
oh man, been trying to score a matchbox SDF-1 at a decent price for a while. a childhood friend of mine had one and I would always temporary trade/borrow it from him; ever since always wished I had one of my own :)
The yellowing of the white plastic is normal... There's basically nothing you can do about it short of NEVER taking the toy out of the box and keeping it out of sunlight 24/7. This happens with a lot of white plastic toys... It happened to an old Transformers Jetfire I used to own (the one based on the Valkyrie fighter) and a Bandai Ez-8 Gundam action figure. Sometimes, the off-white plastic stuff doesn't yellow... I have old O-W game consoles that are fine after 10+ years...
To get rid of the yellow. place figure in large basin container then fill it with peroxide solution then place container with solution and figure out in the sun light and a chemical balance reaction will accrue and figure will begin to whiten again.
+SuperToyTime it will just whiten the yellow back to white. got to do it a couple of times to completely remove the yellow. remember to put peroxide everytime to put it out at the back yard for the whole day. make sure the sun is out and if it rains put it back inside the house. then put it back outside once the sun comes out. it won't harm the blue plastic but it would affect the stickers.
You can help that yellowing plastic by washing some Hydrogen Peroxide on it and then letting catch some UV rays in the sun. Apparently that helps yellowed plastic get white again.
Anyone know where I might be able to find a replacement arm? I found one today thrown in a bin at a Toy shop - Got it for 10 bucks! :) but missing one arm.
+Steve Ricketts other than watching eBay or lucking into one at a toy show not really. There is Saga Toys in St. Louis, they do toy repairs and stuff. You could contact them and see if they have anything.
Michael Parker he was a kid in 84. I remember receiving starscream as my first transformer and I ripped that box apart. it would have been alien to have left it in the box so in the future (2017) I would have a Mint in condition toy.
+muryoken muryo I hadn't seen there before they look really cool. I'd really like to get some of the ships from Macross sequels. Macross frontier and others. One of my holy trails is to get some of the new Valkyries.
This video was an absolute big help. Thank you. I just received my SDF-1 today and if not for this video, I think I may have broken the figure.
+Martin Garza Yikes! I'm glad nothing broke!
+Martin Garza I'm glad nothing broke! The SDF-1 is a tough toy. When I think back to what I did with it as a kid I'm amazed it held up!

+Martin Garza Will that mess with the blue plastic? What about the stickers?

I have heard that about the peroxide. I am just worried about applying chemicals to a vintage toy.

+SuperToyTime got it last week, quite a beauty! Sure is small, yet very detailed, just don't pay over $100 for it.
