    "...Too funked out to get on White radio, and too rocked out to get on Black radio."
    And that's why I love RHCP. Thanks for uploading this.

  • @bloodsugarcrazy3

    I love how they actually respect black culture when it comes to acknowledging where their sound came from. Being in 2019 and understanding how people see cultural appropriation vs appreciation, I'd say that the RHCP have ALWAYS payed homage and respect to the musicians who influenced them. They include them in their videos, talk about them in their interviews and actually approached them for approval and advice in order to develop their funky sound.

    • @keepinitkawaii

      They are definitely a great example of culture appreciation at its finest

      I 100% agree with you that this is how it should be but this isn't something exceptional people like Hendrix have always been respected by anyone who plays guitar.

      I love how they played homage to funk, not race, which does now exists unless your hatred wants it to.

    This video was taken the same year Hillel died from a heroin overdose. So sad. He seemed so full of life in this video.

    • @WrittenFolklore
      @WrittenFolklore 9 років тому +23

      And heroin haha. For real though both. Even though you can see the heroin in his eyes and here it in his voice, you can also tell he had a lot of love for this world. He really didn't deserve to go so soon, and definitely not in that way.
      RIP Hillel

    Flea made a good point. The white audience didn't want to hear the funk and the black audience probably wouldn't listen to the rock. I think a lot of funk artists like Parliament, Bootsy Collins, etc. they're really underrated. I know people throw out the word 'underrated' but these guys never get the credit or respect they deserve for the funk. This is also what gave RHCP a unique sound I think, the funk influence is evident in their music and makes them a great band today.

    • @RastaSaiyaman

      But all the same in DC, you had Fugazi and Trouble Funk sharing bills and Punk Rock and Funk audiences rocking out together.

    Would've been interesting to see where the band went had Hillel survived.. He seems more mature and more self assured than the other two. He has his own mind about what he likes and doesn't like, for example when Flea makes the Aerosmith comment. You can really see, against his cool demeanor that Anthony and Flea are like children acting out constantly "Am I cool yet?!".. Hillel was the real cool.

    • @hazysativa3045
      @hazysativa3045 8 років тому +9

      Hillel was the leader for sure. My older brother caught them in Daytona when I was too young to go 'barely' and hung out. Good times. He has a pic of him and the band to this day. They are out on the beach all high standing there with solo cups. I mean down high.

    • @dockaiser
      @dockaiser 8 років тому +17

      Hillel was their best guitar player in all the years, no doubt ...
      But Fleas comment at the end: " ... to funky for white man and to rocky for black men " . I think both bands, Parliament and the Chilies ran into that problem ...

      I love the chillies but this as blatant as a Nirvana interview. Their high. Flea is super groovy at the start like doesn't know if he should talk, Anthony is faster that the roadrunner and Hillel is very deep and sharing. Let's. It all forget the Jack Iron is having a good stretch. I don't think Hillel is the leaders I think he just a very fair and democratic person.

    They didnt sell out. They matured. Their music has changed. A band cant sound the same for 25 years. It gets boring. They arent afraid to try new vibes and ideas. If its the funk you're worried about... its still there. its just more together.
    Example : Ill Be Your Domino.

    I feel so bad for Jack. I think he was going through a rough patch at this point, didn't feel like talking I guess. I can relate, but I'm glad he's better now. Plus, that hat is awesome.
    This is one of my favourite RHCP videos. Their enthusiasm is just amazing. Their music is everything to me and I totally feel like they do when talking about Sly, Bootsy, Funkadelic, etc. Minus the drugs. RIP Hillel. We love you.
