    I want to thank you for these posts, and I'll tell you why. I'm a senior research librarian at a multi-national law firm. I've been working in law firm libraries collectively for over30 years, and worked in law firms for almost 40 years. I'm about to earn my archives and cultural objects certificate from Queens College (NYC) with my placement as an archives intern beginning in September at an academic institution in the Bronx. While I feel Queens College prepared me for this position, I can't help but be terrified. I've never done an internship in my life, I've worked primarily in a corporate setting since I was 16 years old, and I'm not too far off from retirement. There were students in my class who's half my age and have far more experience in academic libraries and archives than I've ever had. Heck, three of my classmates are teaching (I attended their courses). In essences, I going WAY outside my comfort zone. But a young, gifted and dynamic archivist (just like you) is taking a chance on this old-timer with the upcoming internship. After taking a summer course in 2019 where we studied in an actual archives, I was never more energized to complete the certificate program (even though I had no idea what the heck I was doing). Then the pandemic hit, and you know the rest. To make sure I don't let my supervisor down, I've been reviewing my class notes, looking through academic articles, case studies and research projects on archiving, and I've been going online, including UA-cam, to study up on archival practices. That's how I bumped into your channel. I was watching this video and I will confessed you got me hooked. It's great to see the day-to-day workings of an archives along with musings of an archivists. You've painted a vivid and engaging picture of the rewards AND challenges of working in an archives. Plus I feel you've shown incredible bravery to open yourself to the personal issues you face, and what you do to keep your life enriched and vibrant, both on AND off the job. Watching your channel has given me the reason to not be so afraid. I just have to go in there ready to go, understand what's expected, learn about the institution, listen and learn from my site supervisor, keep the internship course instructor informed of my progress, and chronicle my progress and experiences. I'm not as nervous as I was last week, and you're a part of that reason. Sorry for the long post. It's me getting my thoughts off my chest, and working out any lingering anxieties I may have. Great channel; keep 'em coming!

      thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings and your kind, kind words!! This comment has me on the brink of tears 🥺 this is the reason I’m sharing my experience and it feels so great to hear that it’s helping folks like you. I am aware that ageism is a real thing in the workplace (especially tech industries) and it’s really unfortunate that so many people have wanted to shift career paths, only to have to deal with the fear (and reality) of places hiring younger people…I can assure you not every place is like this. You have so much experience as a librarian - that is very valuable!! Wishing you all the best with your new internship!

      @rfmonii I am in a similar situation (I'm in my early 50s and about to start out in my first appointment in the field), and you made me feel not so alone. I hope your internship went great!

    Do you ever transcribe older documents? Im working to get better with that.

    • @SheilaJoy
      @SheilaJoy  2 роки тому +1

      I haven’t done any transcribing since college actually! My current and past jobs have had other higher priority tasks to focus on (like processing backlog!) so the opportunity to transcribe has never come up. the closest I do to transcribing is trying to translate German church records for genealogy clients.

    i have question : how do you catalogue all of the archives ?

    • @SheilaJoy
      @SheilaJoy  2 роки тому +1

      we’ve been using a spreadsheet which is a pretty basic way to do it for free. But now we’re transitioning to software that has online database capabilities!!

      @@SheilaJoy Would if be possible to basically do a video of what the spreadsheet looks like and how you database everything?

    I just discovered your channel, this was such a nice vlog! Recently, I've become interested in this career field, and I'm currently applying for similar positions. This definitely made me more motivated, and realise that this seems like something that would energise me as someone who loves to get hands on with valuable materials and organise a mess!

    Hello! What is the difference between an archivist and a project archivist? Is it as the name implies or does it have to do with a project archivist being a temporary position? Thank you in advance

    • @SheilaJoy
      @SheilaJoy  2 роки тому +1

      You are correct! A project archivist is a temporary position.
