What is the symbol for surface roughness?
- The mean arithmetical value “Ra” in μm is assumed for roughness measurements. Surface Texture is the variation in the surface in the form of roughness, waviness, lay, and flaws. In practice, both the words - “Surface Texture” and “Surface Roughness” are used to explain common meaning of surface roughness symbols.
How do you indicate surface roughness?
Surface roughness often shortened to roughness, is a component of surface texture. It is quantified by the deviations in the direction of the normal vector of a real surface from its ideal form. If these deviations are large, the surface is rough; if they are small, the surface is smooth
What is RA value surface roughness?
Ra value. Surface roughness is a measure of the texture of a surface. It is quantified by the vertical deviations of a real surface from its ideal form. If these deviations are great, the surface is rough, if they are small, the surface is smooth.
What is RA in drawing?
Arithmetical average roughness （Ra） A portion stretching over a reference length in the direction in which the average line extends is cut out from the roughness curve.
What is the unit for surface roughness?
Average roughness is typically measured in either microns (µm) or micro-inches (µ-in, µ”). One micron equals roughly 40 micro-inches (µ”). Also note that "micron" and "micrometer" are equivalent, and both terms are commonly used. Key fact: Ra has units.
What do surface finish symbols mean?
Symbols that indicate the surface texture of machined and structural parts are used in industrial diagrams. The pictorial representation using these symbols is defined in ISO 1302:2002. This section will explain how to write these symbols to indicate surface textures
How is Ra value calculated?
Ra is calculated as the Roughness Average of a surfaces measured microscopic peaks and valleys.

Measure height across the microscopic peaks and valleys.
Calculate the SQUARE of each measurement value.
Calculate the MEAN (or average) of those numbers (squared).
Find the square ROOT of that number.
What does RA mean for surface finish?
Roughness Average
Surface roughness is calculated measuring the average of surface heights and depths across the surface. This measurement is most commonly shown as “Ra” for “Roughness Average” and that value is used to determine compliance of equipment with various industry standards. Formally, Ra is described in ASME B46.
