    THE LORD'S FAVORITE
You're probably the only one, though it is hard to admit
    That can save me
And I never liked to ask for a helping hand
    But I do now
    I look into your eyes
    This hard, bewildered stare
Part of me wants to hurt you
    Tear in your hair
But I don't do that now
A naive, open wounded exchange of stories that transforms us
    Here
But I think I am the only one breathing on this planet
    Tonight
    The cheap sweat smothered makeup
Makes her face look as if dissolving
    Yet full of grace
    Here in the darkness now
    One hundred Euro wine
I do believe in heaven and I do believe its time
    Yes its time now
    Five inch white high heels
I do believe in heaven and I do believe its real
    And its okay now
    Vast scarlet leisure
    Immense blood pressure
    Scatterbrained love lecture
Come here and be gorgeous for me now
After all I think it's evident that I am god's favorite one
And now is the time I should have whatever I desire
    One hundred Euro wine
I do believe in heaven and I do believe its time
    Faceless company
It don't matter much to me
    Five inch white high heels
I do believe in heaven and I do believe its real
    Dreamlike mirage haze
    I'm positively god's favorite one
    favorite one
    favorite one
    favorite one
I do believe I'm the lord's favorite one

      *****
That's what I'm saying except for the "creative part". No band is getting a deal like they've gotten without people trying to influence them in one way or another and the label's job is to promote and sell as wide as they can which is usually through fashion and image. Why are you even trying to sound like you know anything about them?

Wouter van Heeswijk I think Alec Lambert is referring to Cave's outlaw/murder balladeer lyrics in general and not to any specific album. I agree in that there's no Bad Seeds music that sounds like this; although, some Birthday Party material has a definitely Rockabilly vibe to it ("Release the Bats" and "Big Jesus Trash Can" come to mind). "The Lord's Favorite" sounds mostly like a Post-Punk take on Johnny Cash's sound or like a tougher version of songs off Meat Puppets II. It's also reminiscent of Sort Sol's "Excalibur" and their cover of Kenny Rogers "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town".

Why are some people so upset about new Iceage? It's catchy, smart, and it seems the band has finally caught on to how captivating a frontman Elias can be. And not to be the guy trying to categorize or pin down the group, but it seems the band has moved from Ian Curtis to Nick Cave as a node of influence. Which is really a lateral more than progressive change seeing as how Ian and Nick were contemporaries. If you listen to Elias's side project VAR and read interviews with the band, it's evident that they have loads of influences outside of punk. You don't have to make punk music to maintain a punk approach/ aesthetic i.e. Nick Cave. Fans should be excited about the bands evolution. Who knows, if we get lucky maybe they'll be doing their own Boatman's Call in 15 years

Taurussagacity I get what you're saying and I respect that... we all have our own cups of tea. I didn't mean to be harsh, I just thought it was funny that your comment was like, "I like the direction you're going in, but turn around!" I myself am hoping that their next album won't be comprised entirely of Rockabilly influenced songs, but more of a smattering of different ideas and influences.

Well this is a change of pace. I do admire it though. I've only listened to the song twice now, and I start to recognize some influences from the danish band Sort Sol. It may not be a familiar band to a lot non-danish people, but they sort of did the same thing on their third album, as iceage are doing now. Throwing away their punk and post-punk influences and start toying with other ideas, such as country rock. Not bad at all.

it almost comes off like a tongue-in-cheek parody of the hedonistic american lifestyle through a country sound with a grungey punk dressing.. overall it's badass and I'm all for it

Haha this is cool, wasn't expecting a song like this at all. Also no one said Iceage would exclusively play fast punk forever, get over yourselves

Petteri Pertola You got me, dude. I haven't listened to "PUNK" since 1988. I went home after Little League practice, threw out all of my punk cassettes and said, "I'm through with this shit." I totally missed the Golden Age of Punk.

This is great. Different, but great. I just hope the new album is more like their last album than this though.
