Natalie Weiss performs Defying Gravity at Splash on August 4, 2008 for Curtain Call at Musical Mondays. It is a club, so there are a lot of people talking/singing along...
Knowing Natalie and Natalie knowing damn well what Musical Mondays at Splash can be like, she would probably agree that this is actually a respectful, attentive audience that is acting on their very best behavior and loving every second of it.
Natalie is just great. What is most remarkable about her delivery of this song is how easy it is for her to just clobber those big notes -- no struggle, no strain.
Quite simply the best Elphaba I've ever heard!!! Her "so if you care to find me" made me *sob*, and those high notes were just freakishly impressive! LOVE her. ~Em
The agility of her voice absolutely blows my mind... 1:50 it sounds like she is professionally digitally enhanced every live performance she has, even though its completely natural. I'm a guy, and I'm SOOOOO jealous of her!
That's definitely a riff I've never heard before on the last "ooooh..." Fantastic. I just wish there weren't so many people talking. I could totally see her as Elphaba.
I really like how she doesn't copy everything Eden and Idina do. She makes it her own but somehow still stays true to the originals. She has such a perfect clear voice and her vibrato is spot on. I love her voice; it gives me goosebumps everytime!
Natalie's facebook status is 'Natalie Weiss is sooo upset that her new defying gravity video from Splash is the pitchiest thing EVER...' what ever!! Amazing. I want to see you in a show NOW!!
ridic. it's hard to live up to the others but man somehow she does it and makes it her own. she deserves to really make it in the business. watch out broadway! natalie weiss is your new star!
She's singing the song beautifully (love the song, too). Just wish there wasn't so much noise in the background. Wicked is coming to my town next year. I've read that Natalie Weiss has played Elphaba in the touring cast, so here's hoping...
I dfacebooked her and told her about the tour auditions.. she messaged me back that she knew and she was already "talking" ... hello people she HAS worked with sho and eden!!! and sang with them both (respectivly) so it will NOT shock me.. however i DO pray I get her in SaltLakeCity 2009 when Wicked comes here on tour!!! I would buy tickets for EVERY night for that ENDING!!!
no. she was elphaba u/s and part of the ensemble of the 2nd national tour. (i think she covered for anne brummel who was injured). just for 2 or 3 months.
@jewey896 I actually saw her as the understudy in Chicago three years ago. I remember her last name on the little slip saying she was the understudy. Amazing voice, decent acting.
Dont get me wrong! Shes an amazing sing her, which is why it PAINS me to deliver this bit of information. My friend saw her understudying the role in either Les Miserables (Fantene) or Wicked (Elphaba) (idk which one cuz he said she was ensemble in both, but in one of those two, she was the role, not understudy if that makes sense...) and he said she sounded BEAUTIFUL, HOWEVER she cant act to save her life. The sound was there, but not the feeling and the emotion! He said it was so boring!
@tggold I am not young( over 60) and my generation generally was taught to listen when someone is talking or performing.I suppose that is one of the reasons why the " bar scene " is not where I have ever hung out.
AMAZING voice. I'd love to see her play Elphaba. What a wild crowd. I'm glad they're enthusiastic about her but, seriously, SHUT UP for a second. Still, her voice blows me away. I adored the last run.
As far as the "rude crowd," it's all about where the camera/mic is. If this was recorded in the middle of a bunch of partying club-goers (who all paid, and seem mostly to be digging the singing), then it's hard to isolate the sound coming from the speakers far away up over the stage.
Too bad we don't have a video of this without the loud crowd...thanks for filming though, way better than nothing! And on a side note, her Kristin Chenoweth was dead on!
Natalie has one of the most remarkable voices in captivity. It's remarkable how she remains musical (c.f., just screaming, "American Idol" style) even on the ultra-high belt. But I hope she's discontinued going to Splash, or any similar club at which the audience is so inattentive and loud. That's just pearls before swine. Stick to Birdland and the like, where the audience is respectful and pays attention to the singers.
Knowing Natalie and Natalie knowing damn well what Musical Mondays at Splash can be like, she would probably agree that this is actually a respectful, attentive audience that is acting on their very best behavior and loving every second of it.
I really want to see her interpretation of Elphaba so badly, hopefully someday!

The agility of her voice absolutely blows my mind... 1:50 it sounds like she is professionally digitally enhanced every live performance she has, even though its completely natural. I'm a guy, and I'm SOOOOO jealous of her!

I really like how she doesn't copy everything Eden and Idina do. She makes it her own but somehow still stays true to the originals. She has such a perfect clear voice and her vibrato is spot on. I love her voice; it gives me goosebumps everytime!

I dfacebooked her and told her about the tour auditions.. she messaged me back that she knew and she was already "talking" ... hello people she HAS worked with sho and eden!!! and sang with them both (respectivly) so it will NOT shock me.. however i DO pray I get her in SaltLakeCity 2009 when Wicked comes here on tour!!! i don't have any idea why she didn't make american idol!
she is absolutely amazing!
a great job on one of my fav songs!
she is UNREAL! Natalie for Elphaba!
she blows my mind.
the last riff....are you kidding me?!?
holy poo she's good.
if i ever sing this infront of an audience, i'm stealing all these riffs. hahahaha
OMG my sentiments exactly
THE END!!! WOW!!!!!!!!
OMG what that a A flat at the end? are you kiddin me? what the hell? OMG brilliant!!!!
Wow, she's pretty awesome...
I AGREE about the hand gestures!
@jewey896 I actually saw her as the understudy in Chicago three years ago. I remember her last name on the little slip saying she was the understudy. Amazing voice, decent acting.
"GET IT BITCH!" OMG I died
that last note is amazing. at first i thought she cracked but it was good.
Anyone else notice that the scream directly following the ending riff is also an Ab?
That Ab5 riff is my new favorite thing in the whole world.
She was an understudy for Elphaba. ; w ;
Yayyyyy
Have I mentioned that I love you and...and the Ab at the end =D
WOW!!! very impressive
i think the same thing! i said something about her arms and people flipped out on me. i'm totally with you. :)
She was only the understudy for elphaba on the 2nd national tour, she needs to be lead!
As voices go, she's the most triumphant Elphaba of all. I love her! :-)
@tggold I am not young( over 60) and my generation generally was taught to

i have been wondering why she hasnt played elphaba yet she is soo incredible!
AMAZING voice. I'd love to see her play Elphaba. What a wild crowd. I'm glad they're enthusiastic about her but, seriously, SHUT UP for a second. Still, her voice blows me away. I adored the last run.
Yeah seriously change that fb status! This was freaking INSANE. The ending was sooooooo good!
2:05 that was purely amazing
YES! You betta WERK!
omg her elphaba, vocally would be pure awesomeness....
Damn!
oh my god natalie you WILL be elphaba that was fuckin fierce i love you
If she wasn't more than just a good singer, she wouldn't have graduated from one of the top musical theatre colleges in the US.
Its sad she never got to go on when she was a temp understudy :[[[
maybe she'll come back, she's great!
i really wish that i could give maybe 20 thumbs up to this comment.... i couldn't agree more...
2:37 to the end ... My jaw dropped, DAMN!
And on a side note, her Kristin Chenoweth was dead on!
ugh she needs to not be an understudy and just freaking be casted. PLEASE! someone give me a million bucks, a theatre and i'll freaking do it!
@ChocolateCaliente062 And I'm not talking about the way she sang it necessarily, I'm talking about tone. :)
HOLY SHIT
I wouldn't mind it at all if they cast her for the movie!
haha i heard it too!
2:02 is amazing!
She is crazy for the last note! I love her so much. No she didn't, oh but she did. :-)
2:38 .. damn!
WORK Natalie.

agreed... but this was a response to my comment(i think?) and I can't find my comment... Im so confused
why the heck she isn't playing elphaba on broadway?
Ohhhh she went up sooooo high. Reminds me of Eden in her best days.
