The difference between this and other shoot style matches I've seen is that most shoot style is wrestled with a form of competitive respect, this was wrestled with pure SPITE.
I would say a key to "good" shoot style wrestling is a sense of urgency, although it isn't the only thing you need. Just like any other form of wrestling, logical progression helps too. Also, technical ability is a big plus because if you can't work the style, you stick out like a sore thumb pretty quickly. What makes this match special is not only the spite, but how the two are able to craft a sense of urgency. Everything feels impactful but it also feels real because they clearly know what they are doing. They also do a good job of conveying how much the two dislike each other, especially as Funaki had recently just come into UWF as the golden boy from NJPW's dojo and was threatening to overtake people like Nakano already, who had been with UWF since the start
I forgot to comment this but the venues acoustics were insane. Apparently on Cagematch they had 4000 in attendance. I tried to check what the venue (Hakata Starlanes) could max out to but couldn't find anything. Turns out it was a bowling center. So maybe the way the venue was structured it allowed for the crowd to sound larger than it did. Awesome atmosphere to accompany an incredible match.
Match so good it's got Joseph going giddy 10 seconds in & taking a LONG sip of that drink right afterwards. Insane that it's only 9 minutes. They pack so much great character work & brutal action than most could accomplish with 3x that length. 1989 really was a great year huh?
I haven't watched any wrestling in months, not since watching Forbidden Door live a few months ago. Just lapsed I guess. But your joy and enthusiasm here in this video is so infectious, honestly wish it was me.
the way the shoulders come up as you enter goblin freak mode... despite all the crunchy strikes, it's actually the two psuedo-ddts and that weird roll through bama slam to end it that get me the most.
Is this even wrestling at this point? The suplex at 7:09 was clearly a spike, and could have ended/killed the guy. Might as well do real fighting. This 'shoot' style they displayed had no corporation between the two and just a 'wrestling style brawl'. Easily took years out of their lives. This much damage wont even be sustained in an MMA bout. I cant watch this. Just do real fighting and get it over with. But yea they wanted to show their 'wrestling style' as best fighting art ever, which failed to do when Fedor an other MMA legends destroyed these wannabe real fighters. Watching this 'shoot' style isn't for me. Just fight already, because this is dangerous for both of these guy's health. True gladiator sh*t right here.... Human cockfighting.
these guys did go into mma lol they created it really. Funaki started pancrase and trained bas rutten, both ken and frank shamrock. also the only reason why fedor was even in japan and mma is because of a japanese shoot wrestler inviting his mentor to do shoot wrestling matches. pride and shooto was created because of pro wrestlers. Sakuraba was a pro wrestler. Go learn more history on this i beg.

Look at that one jape dude stabbed outside the ring after mouthing off as if he's Fedor thinking he's that guy but died with disembowemlment. If want shoot sign the contract or u will get yours outside the ring.

love shoot style i wish there were more of it in the world today. Kiyoshi Tamura, Volk Han and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka are some of my favorites ever.
