  • Could you take 5 minutes off of your Marathon time or 30 seconds from your 5km PB JUST by putting on better running shoes? Yes. I think you can. But I want to prove it...
I tested 4 of the top brands "supershoes" against one of their middle of the range shoes that didn't have a carbon plate. Could I find anything that would tell me i'd be faster in the pricier shoe? Something to justify the purchase! I would say the results were pretty conclusive...

I find the main benefit is not in the actual speed of the super shoe but the fact that they don’t wreck your legs which means you can train more and the benefits flow through to better race times. So a 2-3% increase could actually be 5% due to the additional training leading to even faster times.

Very true, the value of carbon plated super shoes ( I have way too many) is really about protecting your legs and not so much a magic carpet speed without any extra effort. I train in carbon plate and non-carbon plated shoes. They are not magic, but they do give me a less fatiguing run especially at tempo speeds. I find my long runs are more “entertaining “ as well ;)

Probably the best way to go about getting to run in these supershoes is get the older version of them that usually goes on sale for $100. That way, you aren't breaking the bank and you get to experience what others paid $200-$300 for.

Great insights Ben and really sensible conclusion too. I've never bought super shoes myself as I've always thought they can give such marginal gains that is only part of a bigger picture with many other factors like consistency and varied training but I would be intrigued to get some one day and see how much of a difference they could make.

Really interesting, great video! I'm not a very experienced runner and have two pairs of running shoes so far, none of them supershoes because I'm still in university and can't afford them at the moment. Still, your results confirm my experience to some extent - running feels so much more effortless in the Saucony Endorphin Speed 2's I bought discounted a short while ago than in the Brooks Cascadia 16 which are my first ever proper running shoes. Not that the Cascadia are bad or cheap (they were 140euros when I bought them new last year and I had to save up for them for quite a while). I find them more comfortable and stable, and they're also more of a trail shoe so not really made for road running, but I enjoy running more in the Saucony because they are much more bouncy. But then it also makes me feel like I'm cheating a bit - maybe that's just the negativity that sometimes gets me, or it's because I don't fully understand what people mean when they say "supershoes make you faster". Yes, they make you faster in the sense that you can run faster than in other shoes at the same effort, but do they also make you faster in the sense that they improve your running form long term and thereby help you become a better runner? If you're running more economically in supershoes, does that translate to better running form and thus faster running in any kind of shoe? I would hope that it does, that would make me feel better about how much I enjoy running in my Saucony shoes :D In the end, I guess whatever helps someone run more and safer is good, so I'll keep alternating between my two pairs like I do now and hope that it helps me both improve my form and speed and also keep my joints healthy. Thank you for the amazing content, love that you brought in so many other people and their opinions and expertise as well!

Great video, and of I love how you (of course) bring everything back into perspective at the end. What I really want to know is, can I, as an overpronator who "requires" stability shoes, race in these super shoes (there don't appear to be any stability super shoes :) )? When I have my gait analysis done, it is always at a very slow pace, and my mechanics just aren't the same when running faster - foot strike goes further forward, reducing the degree of ankle/arch collapse. I can see that for the majority of training, I need stability - because that is done at an easy pace - but for races (and enough training runs to be confident them) ?

Would be interested in a video to see if the performance benefits described in your video extend out to slower runners/paces as well.

  • @mintcloud5026

This was really interesting, and I really appreciate you mentioning the other ways you can improve at the end. I've always thought that the best way to achieve a BQ or another running goal is to improve your ability rather than bodge your way there with an expensive pair of shoes. And the big question for me is: are you cheating yourself with these shoes? For example, if I improved my marathon time by 4 mins through super shoes, I won't have actually improved my fitness or marathon ability by 4 mins, and that's what race times represent for me. I'd rather see a true improvement in regular shoes than feel like I've cheated my way to an arbitrary time with expensive shoes. Plus, £250 for a pair of shoes is ludicrous and it feels like a never ending game by the shoe companies that I don't want to support. Maybe that's just me :)

    • @aliasgharkhoyee9501

Definitely don't pay that kind of money for a set of shoes. However the previous versions of some of them may be similar enough and cost less than 100 quid often, in which case it could be worth it to be able to run more - as recovery is much quicker, leading to genuine fitness gains. Reduced stress on your legs and joints, hence faster recovery and increased training is a major benefit in the long term.

I run lots of hills and I'm 30 seconds faster per kilometer on a good day! The shoes make a huge difference to me. One other point, my hip pain magically disappeared with the Endorphins and resurfaces quickly with my other shoes. Spend the $50.00, you won't regret it!

I held sub 3 pace for 10 consecutive years from the age of 45 running running 12-13 marathons a year over 3 of those years. I always ran in Gel Kyano's or trail running shoes - in 2015 I stupidly bought two pairs of the Hyper Speed 6 that weigh 5 OZ's and to be fair were billled as middle distance shoes or for people weighing in as Mo Farah - they were billed for sub 2.45 type runners and a flat shoe but they felt really good and I thought I was on to something. I held sub three pace to mile 12 and the feed station before the turn to tower bridge when both hamstrings or whatever is in the back of your legs above your knees literally exploded without warning - like a grinding hault - the following day I had bruises the size of tennis balls on the back of both legs.

Cut to this year when I ran a 12k race in the Invincible ZoomX ₹16595( $200). Absolutely no pain in my legs. Even after doing about 300k on my shoes in the last year, they've barely worn out and still look and feel very good

I’ve tried so many different shoes/brands and nothing has compared to Vaporfly. They are something else! I waited ages to buy some thinking it was a myth but they knocked over 30 seconds off my 5k time straight away which amazed me as i was literally knocking like 2 seconds off now and again up until then. I’ve since gone over a minute faster and it’s obvious because I’m fitter too but mainly down to the Vaporfly. When I just train in my Pegasus i feel like i can’t get any speed up now!

Thank you again. Great video as alwyas!
As a regular runner, I find the obsession with shoes, their hype and the marketting around that unpleasant if not disgusting!
Yes, If I'm racing, I want the best shoes in terms of performance and speed. But if I'm training, I want something comfortable (cushioned), nice-looking and cheap. And believe me, there are tons and tons of those off-brand shoes that have all these qualities, some retailing for less than 15 bucks.
Yes, I understand the obvious benefit that super shoes give the runners with all their bounciness off the ground, contact time, vertical oscillation etc, etc. But if you're training (to become healthier and stronger) none of this matters, does it?
What puzzles me is the people who go on and on explaining how this shoe is very lightweight, for example, and then they wear them on hills on training sessions. If you're deliberately training on hills for their obvious benefits, then why do you worry so much about a few grams on your shoes? Isn't that self contradictory?
At the end of the day though, I, too, understand it. You may wanna buy a shoe, just because it makes you feel better, or you just want that brand logo. I'm sometimes like that with other items as well. But please everyone, do not echo the voice of marketting departments of shoe companies and certainly do not be their mouthpeace!

My personal experience is that I gain 15s per km in my Saucony Endorphins compared to the Saucony Ride or the Gel Nimbus, which is definitely the slowest shoe I use. This is for the easy pace somewhere between 5:30-6:00min/km. At my half marathon race pace of 4:40min/km it‘s 10s per km. So this is 3-4% more speed for me.
I still train in the „slow shoes“ most of the time. Switching to super shoes for racing or time trials then gives this feeling of running way more easily, boosting confidence in reaching your goals.
So I can totally support your findings. 👍

A somewhat related question, hopefully you can help me! I have the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3. Great shoe, but relative to the Pro 2, I think the laces are a little short. Therefore, I am not fully comfortable with the shoe lacing, and rather replace it with a longer one. Do you have perhaps have any suggestion? I like the 'resistance' of the laces whereas laces in normal trainers can be somewhat smooth.

  • @raysollarsthehappyjogger5907

My super shoe is my pair of ASICS Metaspeed Sky's. I have yet to use them in a race. I prefer my S/E Speed V1 's. The important question gets down to who you are as a runner and how important speed is vice comfort and stability. I'm 65, I opt for the latter.

I would liked to have seen the other metrics. Over longer distances like a marathon, those will have a greater impact in my humble experience. As I found with my Zoom Fly 4 marathon experiment, despite the historical higher HR and perceived effort, the metrics were right, and by the end of the race I had the lowest average HR I've ever recorded for a marathon. Also a new Masters PB on a harder course. That's obviously a unique experience for my handicapped body. I should do the AlphaFly marathon experiment as well, even though there are some stability concerns. Now I have a respectable OTC insole on my flatest foot which helps with those other metrics, like Vertical and Ground Contact, specifically GCT Balance.

I managed to find some Asics Metaracers used for £50. I have broken the 20 minute 5k in the Metaracers and my PB in the 10k. They are faster, lighter, and almost unfairly propulsive. You also have the mental boost of wearing carbon shoes. You already feel faster before you even start running. You just go faster. Doesn't mean you can't run great times in normal shoes. My Mach 4s are fantastic for racing and perform really well. However carbon is noticeable improvement.

Nice review but I would have liked if you had noted a couple other factors. These shoes vary greatly in terms of weight and drop. Why were some shoes easier to wear? You'll find the ones that you rated the highest tended to be the lightest in weight and also have the least amount of drop. What are you paying for when you buy "super shoes"? The technology to make the shoe as light as possible is certainly a component. The choice to reduce the drop should not impact price, but likely does. If you could find a $5.00 shoe that weighs 6 oz or less and with 4mm or less drop and that fit the shape of your foot well, it would probably rate right up there with the high-priced shoes.

@10:05 Ave Kcals/Min for all the shoes are nominally within each other as there are other factors which would swing the results more than what the shoes would contribute!!! The variances are statiscally INSIGNIFICANT!!!

In your summing up ,I think you overlooked the mental side of things. Once someone believes that the shoes are better than the older ones and that they will enable them to do more proper training, intervals etc. they have everything going for them. Add the fact that they will be spurred on by the ridiculous amount of money they have invested. Listen to any online coach on you tube and they will often contradict themselves in their first sentence so possibly the shoes will be a better way of investing that ridiculous amount of money.

Super interesting video. Wondering if anyone can comment on whether or not it’s worth training in a regular shoe like the Peg and then switching to Alphaflys on race day. Or would it be better to train/race in Alphaflys only?

    • @ThisMessyHappy
      @ThisMessyHappy  Рік тому +3

I think the main limitation with training with shoes like the Alphafly is how quickly they perish in comparison to a shoe more suited for training. I tend to race only with Alphafly (sometimes the odd session) but I want to preserve them for as long as possible in races 😊

  • @stevestarr9769
    @stevestarr9769 Рік тому

I've always said, showbiz and shoebiz are only different by one letter. Until ZoomX and the plated shoes came along, I DON'T think shoes significantly changed or improved since the mid 90s (I started running in 1977.) But the Super Shoes I think HAVE made a real difference for racing. I also once said that if you gave EVERY runner a Nike Pegasus (or Brooks Ghost, or any very basic shoe) to train in, 95% of runners would be perfectly fine. Again, shoebiz and shoebiz are pretty closely related.

Man I wish you would've tested the Alpha's lil brother the Vaporfly. Your testing distance was more of a 5k racer pace and the Vaporfly is lighter so many ppl think they'd be even better suited for this pace than the Alpha.

Marginal gains at best...lets remember these shoes are casts and aren't made for the individual generally, to get any meaningful measure is virtually impossible for the individual..i can see a greater advantage with these shoes towards the pyscology of running as in a placebo effect....you believe you can so you will...far bigger factors are your gait cycle. core strength aerobic fitness and your structural fitness..which i can only see being negatively affected long term by negating the effect to a certain extent of training and recovery and forcibly altering your gait using a shoe that has not been designed for you as an individual .personally not worth the cost to me...fairplay to those who think they are worth it

I actually would respectfully disagree, at least in my recent experience. I feel faster in the super shoes and everyone told me I should. I took a chance and wore a non-super shoe because of the metrics, even though I felt I worked hard, and I ran faster in the non-super shoe that everyone loves to hate. So at least in my experience, the power of belief did not trump science. or is it math? Analytics? You know what I mean! LOL

Spending $300 for a good pair of shoes is nothing compared to the madness that is going on in cycling. Not long ago a bike of $1500 was considered a very good bike. Nowadays, people are happily spending over $4000 for a new bike. Magazines try to convince you that bikes of $1500 are for beginners.
Running is a cheap sport anyway compared to many other sports. But I agree with the final words, it is more important to just have fun!
