Great DIY video! Very thorough instructions! You convinced me that this is the way to go! It is a better way than trying to do the same with a sliced PVC conduit pipe! Much appreciation!
After watching your video, I ordered Kydex for my Nucanoe unlimited. You did an excellent/Professional job on that. Appreciate you posting this.
Thanks bud!!! Glad I could help and thanks for watching!!!! Hit me up on FB or IG if you have any questions!!
Great vid....I needed to watch a another vid of doing this before I start my winter keel project....Perfect instructions... and yeah its best to run some waterproof silicone sealant along the edges ..this will help prevent water from getting under the kydex plates
Thank you!! Appreciate you watching! It lasted it good while before I had to make another one!
Thank you so much for this video. Super helpful and explained perfectly. Appreciate you big dog
With the 3m tape you can spray windex on it so it doesn’t stick immediately you will be able to line it up and then just work it till it is adhered
Your video is the first & best Kydex keel guard I watched, you sol me, gonna give it a try this spring.
Hell yea!! I appreciate that bud!!!! It’s really not hard at all, just takes time and patience. Keep me updated on how you do and reach out if you have any questions!
Good Job! looking to do the same on my new Kayak here within a week or so, this really helped!
Good stuff bruh, most concise Kydex keel guard video Ive watched.
Getting ready to do my yak.
Ty for sharing.
Nice job mate
"Ki-Dex" is what's it's actually called. Other than that, this is genius! Great video!
Great video i have a Kaku kayak and no one makes a keel for mine greatful i found your video
Great video. Thanks for doing this. Love the shirt!
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!!! Are you going to give this a shot??
@@3rddegreefishing273 I’m going to do it today. I have a bunch of kydex and a heat gun!
Nice job. Great teaching video! I am going to do it to my Topwater 106. Thank you.
Great How to video Mike. I was hoping you would make one. Does look professional!!
Thanks bud really appreciate it!! Was intimidating at 1st but got easier the more I did lol
Very nice job!
This is my how to video for this and my Kydex and tape just arrived!
A million thanks!
Just did this now On my 2021 outback , thanks man , life safer . More coverage than the Berkeley pro and same material
Did you have an issue with it folding over itself as you went around the keel?
How did the silicone sealant work out? Did you need it?
What works better in the long run, the 3M tape or the Goop to adhere it to the yak?
Great video. Thank you.
Only issue you’ll have is if you rush it. Gotta work with it to get it right. The sealant last longer than the keel guard, being a guide I use my yaks waaay more than the average person.
But I’ll keep doing it and saving money
Following! Appreciate the info,
New to the outback world here in San Antonio tx,
Of course bud thanks for watching!!! I’m in San Antonio too! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask!! You can reach me faster on my my FB and IG, same name of both sites!
@@3rddegreefishing273 sounds good!
I’ just ordered the kydex .080 to try this weekend
@@oscarguerra4965 badass I’ve got the .08 to just haven’t made the time to give it a shot lol lmk how it goes I’m super interested
No one is following up video with the durability of the kydex. What does it look like after 6 months of use that scratched it up in the first place. I wonder why? Samething with the pvc self sticking tape, never a follow up. Kinda hard to pick the right one when you don't get to see it in action.
It’s more so how often you fish or use your yaks. I’ve made 2 since I posted that video and I fish once a week. So they last but like I said it depends on your use.
Might be a late response for you....I did this same thing to my two canoes with PVC....4 years ago...still there...not worn through...water proof tape has yet to give out...no sealant on the edges...that's about 8-10 river trips per year on each and severe grinding over Tennessee limestone in shallow rivers...I didn't know what kydex was 4 years ago...eventually when I redo these I will use kydex as it looks easier to work with...but... as thick as I can get it.
Excellent how-to ! Any reason why you used 3M tape over marine grade adhesive (goop) ?
Thanks for watching!!! No not really, it was just preference. I'll be using the goop next go around though, seen a lot of people using it so I'll give it a shot.
@3rddegreefising273 did you every try with the Goop? How’d you like the Goop? Can you get the tape or the Good off when your need to replace the guard? Also, can you damage the kayak by heating up that guard? I am considering using on a Old Town Sportsman 106.
Water will water the joint - and without silicon to keep water out 3m tape wont last long to adhere
I thought about that too but, it actually lasted me 6 months before I had to redo it only cause it finally wore a hole through.
Great Video bro, thank you for making me spend more money. This DIY I can afford. lol
@@3rddegreefishing273 You betcha no time for a cart for a short distance, just drag it and hope for the best. OT 2020 pdl
Now that it's been a while have you noticed any difference between adding silicone around the edge or not?
Nah hardly, that silicone sticks and stays lol I had to really pry it off to transfer it to another yak
KYDEX!!!
Good Job, bought 2 berley pro keel guards for my Hobie compass, poor fit, threw in bin has at least 6mm gap, total crap, If you bought some Orange kydex that would have just blended right in looks awesome in black too
Yea I put the berley pro on my pa14 for this weekend’s tournament just because we were launching at a boat ramp and you’re right. I’ll be making a .08 kydex keel guard this weekend
@@3rddegreefishing273 I just ordered some army green kydex to blend into my camo Hobie Compass
Great job dude
Thank you and appreciate you watching!!! Were you able to get the same results???
@@3rddegreefishing273 I just got the product a few days ago. Have not had the chance to try it yet.
@@3rddegreefishing273 fyi, finished the keel guard install. I have the titan 10.5 and used play doh to make a more then transferred it over to the kydex
Did u seal the edges with anything? Great how to video!
I did put some marine clear silicone on my pa keel guard but I don't feel it's neccessary. That 3m tape is very strong, thanks for watching
Thanks
Still holding up good? I'm mainly curious about the 3M mounting tape. I've heard polyethylene plastic is tough to find something that will stick and for that reason 3M couldn't recommend a product to me.
Yes sir! Had to actually peel the guard off when I wanted to re do it. I used the extreme 3m mounting tape and it never came off.
@@3rddegreefishing273 I posted a link in the comments above. Is that the tape you used? Since you had good luck with it I'd definitely like to use the same thing you did. I threw my kydex in a oven today at 325 and it molded to the keel like a champ, ready to adhere it to the kayaks keel! Thanks in advance.
@@3rddegreefishing273 Were you able to pull it off straight up or did you need to heat it or anything?
@@TN-fk4sj nice I like that oven idea! I didn’t see the link to the tape. Feel free to dm via IG or FB same handle, so I can make sure it’s the right tape!
@@SeungHwang hey bud, it took some effort to pull it off but I was able to do it without adding heat
That looks awesome!!! How does it perform?
It performed very well for the amount and cost. It did wear thin and I replaced it again. But I'm a guide and fish at least once a week sometimes 3-5 times a week. So for the amount and effort I'll keep replacing it every 6 months or so. Beats the other more expensive options.
@@3rddegreefishing273
Thanks. I think the kydex looks a lot better then other methods (gator patch, pvc, etc).
@@stackedpennies4377 yes agree, plus you can make it to your liking! Thanks for watching bud!!
Just did this in my kayak after seeing the video…ran a hole through mine after only 3 trips out? Does it get weak when you heat it?
It can get thin if you stretch it too much. Also I use mine as landing protection not to drag it up anywhere. I’ve since then gone to a thicker kydex .08 and have had no issue’s.
How is a material that one can cut with a knife and shrink with a heat gun, going to protect ones kayak sufficiently and/or for any extended period of time?
Did the 3M tape ever give or has it held strong? Thanks
@@matthew3576 marine grade silicone is what a few buddies I know have used
How well did the adhesive hold up to use?
I've been out 10 times on the same setup with my pa14 and it hasn't budged. It's gonna take intentionally taking it off to remove it
Good stuff. I’ve used Gator guards before. This method Looks great. Great video.
Nice job. Looking to do this myself. How thick is the Kydex? I see different options online.
@@andrewbland625 thanks for watching bud, yes .06 but I'm going to go thicker on my next attempt just to see if it makes a huge difference. It's lasted me since I made the video. But I fish at least once a week and it finally wore through. Not bad for a $5 product and some elbow grease
@@3rddegreefishing273 Thanks for the reply. How thick would you recommend then? I see .093". I don't want to go too thick
@@andrewbland625 I'm sure .093 won't be too much a difference. I was looking at a few around that thickness too. Probably just have to work it a little more to get the desired fit but should be totally doable.
Why you do everything the hard way
How thick is your kydex?
I want to say that sheet was .060 in thick. It lasted a full season but I'll probably make another video with another sheet that's .080 in thick. I don't see it being too much of a problem but will probably have to work with it a little more to get the fitment right.
Duct tape works fine and you can buy it in red
Why would you drag a kayak? Just pick it up… they don’t weigh that much.
Genius shape idea! Thanks so much for the video. I am definitely going to be doing the same thing to my kayak. Thanks for the video!!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching!
