    I'm Chinese and my family speaks Cantonese, but I never learned it growing up. So now I'm trying to learn it so I can talk more to my family.

      Sydney Ly don’t feel bad. I can’t teach my kids my native tongue either because they live with their mom. It’s actually a common problem that is an unfortunate side effect of the times we live in. Sad but true. Nice to know people want to know where they come from and who they are, hope my kids do the same when they get older. It would make me proud and it should make you proud as well. Good luck.

    Hi, I am a 61 year old English man and due to a recent spinal injury I have found myself housebound for a while. I decided to do something different and because I have always loved the Chinese I decided to learn the language. Anyway I found your channel and I absolutely love and understand it. You are a great tutor and in a few hours I have learned plenty. You probably don't do these anymore but I would just like to say a big thank you to you and look forward to the rest of your lessons. (sorry about the long text)

    thank you it's -great and very usable channel
    why do you use numbers after Chinese words
    like zik1 hai6 dim2 aa3
    Is it about different tone
    ?
    can you please send a link with explanations about the different tones
    Tnx

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  6 років тому

      Yes, you're right, the numbers behind the romanization are tones. Since the same pronunciation in different tones has different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out our other video here: ua-cam.com/video/XmmktTDoS04/v-deo.htmlm18s

    Hello, I'm new to Cantonese. May I ask why do the pronunciation have numbers beside it? Like for example dim2?

    • @カラスKarasu
      @カラスKarasu 9 років тому

      +Mio They point out the tone. The Cantonese language has 6 tones. A word might mean different things depending on what tone you use.
      I recommend not giving them much attention though. Just imitate the words and you'll get the tones instinctively

    • @sleepysloth634
      @sleepysloth634 9 років тому

      +カラス Actually Cantonese has 9 tones instead of 6

    • @xlartanislx
      @xlartanislx 9 років тому

      +Natalie Hon I thought cantonese had 8 tones.

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  9 років тому

      +Mio カラス is right, it's indication of the tone, Cantonese is a tonal language, meaning that even if it's the same sound, it has different meanings when pronounced in different tones. (Eg. maa1 "mother"; maa5 "horse) You can learn more about the 6 Cantonese tones from this video: www.cantoneseclass101.com/2015/11/06/ultimate-cantonese-pronunciation-guide-8-cantonese-tones/

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  8 років тому

      shaRtube Depending on the system used, our system only have 6 tones, it helps learners quickly grasp the Cantonese tones sounds, as the extra 3 tones are actually sound more than tones.

    I have a question. There are 2 types of "thank you", "唔该" for a service and "多谢" for a gift. How about if someone gives you a compliment? For example if someone says "You are so kind and smart." in Cantonese. Should I reply 唔该or多谢?

    • @slamdunk406
      @slamdunk406 4 роки тому +1

      ruixin jiang Great question! My understanding is you would want to use “多謝” since they didn’t have to give you the compliment. The compliment in a way is a gift.

    • @ruixinjiang9555
      @ruixinjiang9555 4 роки тому +1

      @@slamdunk406 多谢... (I assume an answer in a way is a gift too)

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  4 роки тому +1

      That's right, you use 多謝 when people give you a compliment.
      When people gives you an answer, usually we say 唔該. ^^"
      It might be hard to grasp for now, but observe how others respond and you'll get it flowing naturally ;)

    • @CantoneseClass101
      @CantoneseClass101  8 років тому +1

      The numbers behind the romanization are tones, since the same pronunciation in different tones have different meanings, that's an essential part of Cantonese language. :) To learn more about Cantonese tones, check out www.cantoneseclass101.com/2015/11/06/ultimate-cantonese-pronunciation-guide-8-cantonese-tones/

How do you say a) you're an excellent teacher! , b) please, fix my clogged shower drain! c) No need to do the dishes and clean the bathtub. →Olivia, the reason for this phrase is I'd like to do those two tasks by myself, so I want to notify the housekeeping staff in our apartment.
