I love how this went from a kind of silly talk about flipping a coin vs rolling a d6 and ended up with a wonderful discussion of the uses of randomness in games and how it can improve the experience if implemented well.
This was actually such a great video. The thumbnail had me cracking up because of the meme but you actually had interesting conversations about the nature of chance throughout the whole thing. Even the part with the "child" was genuine and wholesome. Great content!!!
thank you! Was super interesting to make, was originally gonna be more of a parody, but I wanted to have a geniune discussion at the end of the day. Cheers! -Ashton
Okay I thought this video was going to be a silly fun parody of the WIRED videos, but holy shit I have learnt so much from this video. This is a BRILLIANT way to teach even more core board game mechanics like area control, engine building, card drafting, and pretty much any mechanic that non-board game geeks wouldn't know. I think the next step of this would be Level 5, where you actually talk to a board game designer who has incorporated these mechanics into their game! That would be amazing! I'm just getting into board games and some of these terms confuse me and I don't know what to expect either. This is brilliant. PLEASE MAKE MORE!!
Awesome man! Would have to get a board game designer at some point that would be awesome. Thinking of tackling more topics for sure in the future, we'll see where it goes! -Ashton
14:18 Leave out the dice out of my Gloomhaven!!! 😅 The card system is actually a thing we mention all the time as a huge plus for that game. It adds another layer of strategy on when to attack and use some items depending on the probability of drawing a good/bad attack modifier.
One of my absolute favourite things ever is that Summoner Wars' melee attacks are rolled on 5 of 6 sides of the dice, and ranged attacks are rolled on 4 of 6 sides of the dice. So I find there is still a decent amount of tension and joy in rolling the dice. But as mentioned in the "Level 4" discussion, the designers are not constrained to the swinginess of 6 sided dice! In my recent game against my wife, I rolled 4 dice and only got one successful ranged attack multiple times! There's never any guarantee with these ranges but they're not as overly punishing as dice can be in other games.
Just like how Daniel pointed out, its actually good to be rolling dice a lot to even out outcomes, summoner wars has tons of dice rolling! Also really efficient how both ranged and melee attacks are on the same die, cheers! -Ashton
@@Shelfside Ah yes very true! I had not thought about the efficiency in the design as well! I also really love that they went away from 6 sided pipped dice and just went with symbols. Much more efficient than hitting on certain results. I never have to look up stats for my character after my roll (wait does she hit on 3s or 2s?), the result is immediately clear! Keep up the great work, I really appreciate this more "meta" design content.
@@Shelfside Look up for pictures. It's a plastic dice where all the faces are atachable and removable. So during the game you get new faces to replace the older ones. It's like a deck building mechanic, but you are building dices hehe
@@Shelfside It's a light quick building deck. Great filler, nothing more then that. I just mentioned it because you said in the video that you can't modify your dice on the spot, and I remembered this game hehe
I like this format, doing this same thing with Cards... well it'll be a much longer video haha, I'm with you though I hate shuffling, I also feel like Dice in general are more accessible, especially to non-english speakers, usually you need numbers or iconography which is language independent, where cards can get bogged down in keywords and text.
I like the format, it's something different even if I thought it'd turn to meme at the end with the last level person going all "dice bad. no dice whatsoever byeee" Great work guys! (Also what have you been feeding Benjamin)
I know the concepts of input and output randomness, but always forget which is which .... so then I go to impress my friend with my Deep Level Knowledge, but I get stuck and start mumbling incoherently. :(
The first couple of times I heard it, it completely flew over my head. Just started getting way more used to it over the years and could clearly see it in games! You'll get there in no time ahaha -Ashton
Cool concept for a video. Liked the format, nice innovation in the presentation.

Implying children aren't people lol, great video guys!
Love the child impression it was so accurate like wow…… this was a very cool video
I think he actually was a child before, so it helped him know how to act.

"Play around the dice" ist the perfect last sentence to make a statement about the sense of dice in a game
love this format and in-depth discussion. would love to see more videos like this
cheers! Thinking I could possibly make a new vid a bit similar in the future -Ashton
I love your non-review content, I feel like they are a great way to break up the reviews and also helps to distinguish you guys as a channel.
Thank you! Was fun experimenting with this format -Ashton

There is a game where you can customize your dices on the spot: Dice Forge hehe
oh that's awesome! I can't imagine it'd be through stickers though, right? How do they do it? -Ashton

Benjamin grew real fast real young -Ashton
This was a great video! Really enjoyed it.
thanks henri! Glad ya enjoyed it -Ashton
Just saw Throw Throw Avocado at Target. The box says it can be combined with the Burrito Game.
considered picking it up, but we already have Throw Throw Ultimate with the super inflatable burritos. Good for some time with that :) -Ashton
That's a tall 4 year old child
he had a massive growth spurt at 3 years old
This video was so cool. Funny and intriguing.
Are you guys going to strategicon?
Thanks mate! No plans to go to any conventions soon! -Ashton
I think we need more reviews from Benjamin.
he is... pretty busy so that may be hard :) -Ashton
Aha, someone else watches Wired! Well done.
ahah you bet, thanks! -Ashton
That young Benjamin has a bright future!
On set, he was told he's a bit big for his age, but I think his brain is just big for his age

I realized while editing that this game is a fantastic ad for TI4, one day you should play! -Ashton
