Just found this after buying Swordishtrombones vinyl reissue. Great video! The LP I bought sounds OK, but honestly the digital remasters sound better, wider and larger on the same system, which I wasn't expecting. Also there are plenty of pops that happen to occur in especially quiet songs like Town With No Cheer. Mine was pressed in Canada. While I love the vinyl experience I'm trying to decide whether or not to return it. $33 for a merely OK sounding vinyl remaster doesn't feel good to me. My system, for reference, is: Rega RP3 Shelter 201 Bugle2 Phono stage Cambridge CX81 PSB Synchrony 2 Speakers
Love MNPLS. I was a real nerd on one visit - I walked by the Let It Be House, walked by the old Nicollet Studio space and then finished the afternoon at the CC Club with a longneck beer. Enjoy !
Cool! I've done none of those things so far, but I am loving it here. (Ask me if I still feel that way in February...) I'd like to see the house on the cover of the Grant Hart 2541 EP. If you ever come through town, gimme a holler!
Thanks, Jeff! I'd been looking forward to these Waits reissues for awhile and I was anxious that they'd screw them up. Like I mentioned, missed opportunity imo to not cut directly from tape, but I think they hit it out of the park with the sound. Maybe someday I'll get my hands on originals again so I can compare directly, but I wouldn't be surprised if these are the best these albums have ever sounded.
Good to see you, Ian . Mazel tov on your new geographic and system upgrades 😃👍. Hey that's appropriate you got those Tom Waits reissues... Isn't " 9th & Hennepin" in Minneapolis?!? 🤔 Me and my family have been trying to figure out where to move for about three years now. Still have no ideas! Any how, enjoy your new environment! Best of luck to you guys!
I had to look that up since I'm so new here...but from what I've read, the title of the song is referring to 9th Street and Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis, but the imagery from the song is from New York. We love it here in Minneapolis so far. Really really green, plus we're just a few blocks from the Mississippi River. Very bike-able. Maybe I'll have a different opinion in February or March, we'll see. And the stereo is a real joy!
Well Ian, Minnesota’s gain is Iowa’s loss but completely understandable (I’m in rural NW Iowa). Having Electric Fetus and Mill City Sound nearby makes it all worthwhile. I can’t imagine winters in Minneapolis are too much colder than Decorah, once wind chills hit -10 it’s general frigid misery anyway. Looking forward to the next set of Tom Waits reissues coming soon. Cheers!
Aw, thanks! We'll see come February or March, but I see the winter thing the same way: it's probably a bit worse, but Decorah was plenty bad. I'm also looking forward to Bone Machine and The Black Rider!
Great job on this, historically a big Waits fan and was curious to see what the results were. As I figured, Waits and Brennan go their own route with how they deal with their content but I'm glad they did use some critical oversight with these. Nice they used Bellman to transfer and did have actual tape. I do have the originals and would love to compare em sound wise. I bet these do sound better but hoping to do an A/B. Awesome used record deal at the Foetus. Nice setup too!
Thanks! I'd love to A/B these with originals as well... it's rare that I don't favor originals. Would be cool if you or someone else on here did that, as I don't see myself scoring originals anytime soon. I was sort of hoping these reissues might drive down prices on originals, but I'm not seeing that yet at least. Anyway, thanks for watching and chiming in!
Enjoyed your video, and share your experience of facing the high cost of getting 'Rain Dogs'. I just received it and really enjoying the album, though unfortunately there's a skip on my favorite song 'Jockey Full of Bourbon'.
Nice shelves! I am lucky enough to have original (or early) copies from his first to the end of the 80s. So, I am waiting for the reissue of Bone Machine and Black Rider to fill in the gaps. Nice to hear your opinion on these. I've been cycling to record stores in Toronto for ages. But, we are spoiled here with so many record stores. The last time I bought a new backpack, I brought some records to make sure they would fit 😀
I still hope to someday get an original of Rain Dogs back in my collection. I'm super curious how it would sound on my current system and in comparison to the new reissue. My guess based on memory is that the new reissue is better, but an A/B would be really interesting. I too am looking forward to Bone Machine and The Black Rider, as I expect they'll sound every bit as good as this first batch. I've thus far found Minneapolis to be quite bike-able, but not quite on the level of what I've experienced in the German-speaking world. I've never been to Toronto, but I'm guessing it's good for cycling, with bike lanes/paths and snow removal, etc? For me, having on-bike storage is key, as I sweat like a pig and my back is quickly soaked when I bike with a backpack. But your anecdote of bringing LPs to buy a backpack made me chuckle 😆. Anyway, nice hearing from you, Brian!
@@brokewithaudiophiletaste6076 Toronto has a pretty good bike infrastructure with dedicated bike lanes, some traffic signals, fairly decent snow removal in those lanes, nut not in non-separated lanes (those ones are simply a place to dump snow). We also have more than our fair share of drivers who hate cyclists and think that roads are made for cars. A fairly well-known hockey commentator here once called anyone who cycled a "commie bike-riding pinko." 😔
I can think of one reason to move away from Iowa..people from Iowa live there…lol….love Tom Waits and appreciate your thoughts on the reissues..I am most interested in Rain Dogs and Bone Machine out of the five..great video👍❤glen
The rednecks and Fox News victims were wearing on me, for sure. And Iowa is no place to raise a family at this point. Florida North. I'll definitely be getting Bone Machine and The Black Rider when they come out in a couple weeks. I'm listening to Swordfishtrombones again right now and it's really really impressive.

Great that you can easily travel to a record store now. I've got a question about the Ortofon bronze... Do you find that yours rides low compared to other cartridges? I've had three bronzes and each of them ride so low that if the record has a lip on the outer edge, it actually rubs up against the cartridge. My tonearm has been "professionally" calibrated so it should be set correctly and this only happens with the Ortofons.
Hey Robert, yes the cartridge rides low, but no it doesn't rub. I've always found the shape of the Ortofon 2M series cartridges to be strange and I once imagined that rubbing might happen. But it's been all good with my table. It does come factory-installed to the tonearm, maybe that's why? Ida know, like you I'd expect professional calibration to eliminate that (I expect that would include optimizing the tracking force, which is what comes to mind as a possible solution). All I can tell you is that I'm not experiencing that and that I'm really happy with it.
Your minutes are longer than mine Ian. Like the look of your new digs in the background. I gotta say I'm sweating on what you say about the Tom Waits, because I have them all on order. I'm hoping for the best because Bone Machine I've only had on CD and probably my favourite. I'm like you I had the 80's stuff since the 90's & got 'em pretty cheap. With all the digital malarkey going on, it seems unavoidable, but you gotta go with your ears. I have some late 80's record that proudly display that they are digitally remastered. Different times. Who would say "Ortophone" 😂 I had the bronze & was really happy with it. I had a Rega Amber turntable since about '95 and when I got the Bronze it was such a huge jump in sound. I went a bit nuts last year & bought a P8 with a Hana ML MC Cartridge. I probably shouldn't have spent so much considering all of the lo-fi stuff I listen to but man!! You're excitement at now being able to have the simple pleasure of going to a record store will hopefully rub off on some of the jaded inner city types. You don't like Blackstar or the first EC? Wow! I got the Lush reissues. They're great! I don't have the originals to compare. Good to see you back on the screen asking all the right questions & delivering the info in your usual entertaining way. Cheers...Ben PS Do you reckon Tom has another album in him? It's been a long long time
This is some thick, impenetrable Australian you're hitting me here with, Ben 🤣 I'm going to have to get in front of the computer to reply to this so I can wrap my head around what you're saying.
What does "your minutes are longer than mine" mean?!😂 The house is really nice, I love it. My only regret is not having done it sooner. I'm extremely impressed with the sound on these records, looking forward to the Bone Machine/The Black Rider batch in a couple weeks. Cool to hear you also had the bronze and also liked it. I didn't know there was such thing as a Hana Marxist-Leninist MC cartridge, but sounds like my kind of thing! But seriously, I'm very curious about MC cartridges. Maybe I'll hear one before I die. I don't know what you're referring to re: "Blackstar or the first EC?" Good to know you like the Lush reissues. I have originals of all three of those albums and they fetch a fortune. At a certain point, it turns into "would I rather have this record or would I rather have $150 (apparently $236 AUD)" and if the reissues sound better...Anyway, thanks Ben for watching and chiming in. I get the impression Waits is done putting out new music, but I have no idea, hopefully he'll surprise us!
@@brokewithaudiophiletaste6076 G'day Ian, The first thing you said at the top of your video was "It's been a minute" that's why your minutes are longer than mine, because it's been an age since your last vid. See not thick impenetrable Australian after all 😂 The republicans have probably blocked any marxist cartridges from entering your country sorry. Seriously it's the combo of the best turntable I've ever had and the cartridge. It's lightyears ahead in detail and depth of sound from my previous set up. I think because the stylus sits deeper in the grooves and the turntable itself is so silent with an unbelievable tonearm, in general my records are much quieter and I hardly ever detect any surface noice, pops, clicks, etc. Even on records that were once problematic for my old bronze ortophon. It definitely gets the best out of what's there, so everything from punk rock to Ryuichi Sakamoto's string arrangements really have a lot more punch and in the room sound. Blackstar is the Bowie album you held up and EC is Elvis Costello. I was amazed that you were kinda meh! about them.
