Hidden Malfouf is a Dumbek/Drum Set duo based around Middle Eastern Rhythms. “Malfouf” is one of the more popular rhythms with a rhythmic sequence of 3-3-2. I have found this particular rhythm embedded, or hidden, within other Middle Eastern rhythms. In sections of this piece one player will start a longer pattern and the other will expose the Malfouf within that pattern. Often the exposed Malfouf does not land on the downbeat which leads to displaced rhythms being played simultaneously…perhaps tricking the listener, or even the performers, as to who owns beat 1.
