I'm a proud Nigerian(Yoruba) and despite my religion being Christian, I still have relatives in the rural village of my tribe who stick to our oriṣà ancestral worship or the new generation returnees to the religion. We have 3 main recognised religions in Nigerian. Some people openly practice one of the 2 main religions of Christian & Islam but secretly ingrain themselves with our ancestral Òrișà religion. Even our dance of 'Bàtá' is associated with our ancestral religion. Orisa religion is entwined with our culture & tradition, has many deities with links to the Higher God ( Edumare) but yes, you do have the deities of Anger & Wrath. Ogun is the deity of Anger & wrath in the ancestra religion. Now the religion went across the ocean with slavery. With this, they have mixed it up and disguised it from the slave masters. All religions have a darkside. You can find curses in the Bible from OT to NT. Islam too has its darkside. So when pple demonise our Ancestral religion being voodooic, I disagree. It's not demonic but, is more earthy and lies on 'karma or peace'. It's a tolerant religion hence why Islam & Christianity were able to invade with brainwashing or bloodshed to convert. These other religions demoniced our ancestral religion and called it 'Paganism' or 'infidels'. I reiterate that the Orisa ancestral religion is not based on magic, evil or darkness. Beyonce is basically using the religion for marketing purposes. The Orisa people live it, it's there way of life.
I appreciate your firsthand perspective on the traditional African religion. I think Christians and Christianity need to be confronted with the reality of other religions and beliefs, that it is usually people also working with God and spiritual values, only from different cultural imagery and languages. Unfortunately, many Western American Christians, specifically the narrow-minded Christian, will look at all other spiritual beliefs as deception. I've seen this attitude time and time again. There’s no place for a plurality of belief in that way of seeing, in that kind of biblical interpretation. An open-minded person of faith will understand the world with an appreciation of religions and faiths, as well as people's personal perspectives. An open-minded Christian may understand that God inhabits all of us and that God's power can and at times, Will, work through people's beliefs within their personal lives. God doesn’t judge in the way humans do, because it’s inside and around everything, God understands everything, and is part of all that’s going on. Thanks again for explaining and sharing something of the Nigerian tradition.
It is a deception, there's only one God. The Christian God is the only one God. The others are demons that the Almighty created. All nations were given to demonic powers besides Israel. God used Israel to bring other nations to him.
Karine I love your post and your definitely right and you can't use Yoruba or Santeria or Vodoon for malicious intentions. But you have fanatics in all religions and faiths. I'm not a real fan of Beyone or Cardi B. I really hope they aren't using religious ritual for treachery and marketing.
I love Celia! My parents are Cuban, I was born in Miami and grew up listening to her powerhouse voice and fantastic music. She was a beautiful woman, full of love and sweetness. A true icon.
She was the Aretha Franklin of Salsa/Mambo. I saw her perform live twice. I dated a woman who practiced Santeria back in the 80s and that is how I was introduced to her.
She wasn't the Aretha Franklin of anything, she was the one and only Celia Cruz. No disrespect to Aretha, who was not only a great singer, but a great piano player.
@@Ayinde65 You are overly sensitive. I was merely trying to point out her significance to people who were not familiar with her music and impact but who are familiar with the impact Aretha Franklin had on music here in the US at the same time. I am a Black American and most people I knew had never heard of Celia Cruz back in in the late 80s when I started listening to her and tried to explain to people who she was.
I remember a day before she died. I was with my mom in Nicaragua and I remember we had a birthday party, bumping Celia Cruz! my Mom said most people hate Celia Cruz, but when she dies everybody is going to miss and love her!!! The next day on the news! Celia Cruz Dies! My Mom and Everybody was Shocked 😲😅 People forget that a day before her death and in that same week the news was talking bad about Celia Cruz, and My Mom was literally telling people every body will miss her and her music! True story I remember it like it was yesterday and it always stuck with me😢
I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND Karine where you are coming from as respect to Christianity mixing with a variety of deities. It's in just about everything and the masses are unaware. That's why I pray the blood of Jesus and ask for wisdom, guidance and protection in all things🙏🏾. I learned about Celia and Santeria through the Netflix miniseries and the movie Black Orpheus (1959) with the stunningly beautiful Marpessa Dawn. I've heard rumors over the years that Bey was into some things, I'm not a fan of her nor her music. I don't keep up with her. I'm not surprised. My conscience won't allow me to listen to Bey music and many others. Some movies and books I can't get into. To each his own. We all will answer the Almighty in due time❤
I grew up in a Pentecostal church and certain things I feel sumthin inside me wont let me expose myself to like beyonce so I get what u r saying. I've also worked in the entertainment industry in LA and I had to leave it became too ridiculous. But once I moved back to ATL almost immediately Hollywood was right behind me and I found myself surrounded by that lifestyle again. It's crazy sometimes
You and me both. Beyonce is an artist I can't stand and I don't know why. When I was a teen I loved her I would sing and dance to her songs. But the day I stumbled on some videos showing how demonic she is. I immediately stopped liking her
I had to pause the video to thank you for doing this overview of Celia Cruz. Her musical talent was so influential. She should be celebrated for her contribution to our Black Culture. Blessings
Speaking on the Beyonce side bar:: There is another yt channel (dela cafe testimonies) where a guy was studying under a voodoo priest in new orleans and Solange happened to come in his store to buy things. He said the preist confirmed that their whole family frequent his store (of course this lines up with all of the symbolism/lyrics in her art)
Voodoo is not inherently evil. It is about keeping the way of the spiritual realm of which we all come from in alignment with the earthly so that we develop good character. In order to do that one has to be confident in their spiritual practice for growth, development and protection. Everything isn’t based on Hollywood propaganda and White Supremacy psychological and spiritual warfare, executing the narrative via propaganda. One can choose to cheat spiritually or grow patiently spiritually. Those are the two types of people who visit those stores. Esu, the Orisha of karmic justice approves free will equally as he holds us accountable to our free will. You do evil, you real evil. You do good, you reap good, all in the long term and beyond multiple generations. This is why African people all over will receive Reparations. Universal law means nothing is given without something to be received, nature proves that clearly.
@toyaamos8717 Dela Cafe testimonies. He does a lot of interviews where people have come to christ. The young man he interviewed was once in the occult world, then he had and encounter with God. He is currently a preacher. Awesome testimonies, watch it and see for yourself.
As a Christian I appreciate videos like this educating about other religions/spiritual practices. Although I have my own beliefs I feel that other beliefs should still be respected. Even in Christianity if your intent isn’t pure you can still send evil onto others. Also, thank you for bringing to light Benyonce’s religious practices because it’s very belittling when people try to say she isn’t pulling from other energy forces for her success when she clearly is in front of our faces.
AZÚCAR ❤ so much personality and love in one person. So sad she couldn’t withhave children to share it with. It was well-known she always wanted children and loved kids.

Ms.Celis Cruz, Who had a Remarkable career with her Beautiful voice. Its a shame that she was exile from her own Country. Not to be able to see her Mother, That was pure evil of Cuba. "One Of The BIGGEST Forms Of Deception Is A LACK Of TRANSPARENCY".... Totally Agree that People should be informed as well as 'Make An Informed Search' as far as what Religious Practices & Cultural Origins & Significances are often fused with Music & Entertainment, so that one doesn't inadvertently mock Others' Beliefs or even unknowingly infringe upon Their Own! (....& I also have A Caribbean Heritage, That Of Jamaican Descent, Btw....) Thanks for Another Great Video! 👍🏽✌🏽
There's a reason why African religions went underground, we all know about the history of suppression. BTW, my village in South America was a hotbed of Mama Wata worship. African descendants were forced to hide their true beliefs, and even though the Abrahamic faiths are far more murderous, it is Vodu, Shango, Palo, and Santeria that are seen as "evil" of negative.
@persebra ....& A Lot Of Religions, Presumably Christian & Otherwise, Have 'MADE UP' A Bunch Of 'GODS & BELIEFS' That Are 'FALSE As FAIRYTALES', So.... "Go Figure!" 👍🏽✌🏽
@persebra That can EASILY Be Said of EVERY Religion, Even Egyptian Credence! Yet, Regardless Of 'Who Took From Who', The POINT Here & In THIS Video is that One 'Cannot & Should Not Be Deceived' as to 'WHAT Form Of ENTERTAINMENT Derives From The CULTURAL Origin' of It That could 'Mock Or Infringe Upon' One's Own As Well As Other's Personal Beliefs & Moral Codes, that's all....👍🏽✌🏽
Thank you so much, Karine, for this story on Celia Cruz. I knew about Celia as a singer, but didn't know this much. Thanks again for a wonderful breakdown.❤
To be fair, if you practise, Santaria, condomblé , Ifá or voodun, you must give praise and honor to the orishas or loas for giving you the gift of talent, beauty, money, health and strength. It is the same when people praise God, Allah, Yahweh and thank him/her for all their blessings including health, talent, strength, beauty and money. If people were able to practise their faith openly in this country without judgment there would be no hiding. Although, they say the US is free, these religions are still looked at suspiciously.
My mom was raised a catholic yet taught me God speaks to everyone in a language they understand. Santeria spoke to Celia Cruz. She was in rotation in my house growing up. Thanks for sharing womens stories, love your work!
I saw her when I was watching Sesame Street as a little kid and saw this woman singing and that’s how I remember her until this day. She was always glamorous.

As an American black woman i always knew about Celia Cruz all my 50 years of life.I even have albums when she was with Tito Puente just am amazing Singer.Queen Celia RIH 🙏🏾❤
Thanks for your concise summary of Celias career! I am a black American🇺🇸 from the south, i became familiar with Celia Cruz as a college student in the early 2000s as a Spanish major. Love her music, read her autobiog, and adored her use of AZUCAR! to punctuate. When it comes to other religions, we as black Americans have similar pockets of peoples who worship other deities, and growing up baptist/christian, there were whispers to stay away from those who practiced "vodun" or "worked roots" (using the elements of nature for good or ill)as it was called. Its interesting bc although my mom didnt grow up in church, she kept her children in church when we were young, but she still had "pagan" practices, using nature for healing and warding off negative spirits etc stemming from Africa/Native Americans and the deep south... probably even some old irish paganism mixed in as we are descendants of the TransAtlantic slave trade.🤷🏽♀️ Unless we read about these african gods, we wouldnt know much about them, theur sacrifice reqs, and how to worship them etc. With Beyonce, this seems like something she grew into, as she grew up southern Christian, going to church etc.(still again, her moms from LA, and dads from AL, so there is much intermingling of those African religions/creole spirituality (mixing religious traditions from multiple cultures) forms of worship in secret. She is with JayZ, a Sagittarius ♐️ who studies religions and other spiritual practices, so im sure they influence each other.
👏 I thoroughly enjoyed reading your comment. It was very enlightening. I think that people should have the freedom to worship as they believe and understand. Do no harm, mind your business (live your best life-it’s so brief), and try to learn/ understand others without persecuting them for their differences.
Thank you Karine, for educating on Oshun. I had know idea about this Goddess. I appreciate all of your hard work and dedication in educating about the icons of Hollywood! Could you please do a breakdown on the life of Doris Day?
I’m half Afro Cuban and fell in love with Celia Cruz after her death because I didn’t know her music but I knew who she was. I watched the Netflix series on her and was so intrigued by her music and personality. I am glad they focused on her spiritual journey. She is definitely someone I wish I could have met in this lifetime.❤
Afro Caribbean here! My religion is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. The fact alone that we have this after our history, proves the resilience of the ancestors. We have so much respect for nature and natural forces and that makes me so proud.
I love Celia Cruz and her contributions to music. There was a Netflix series based (Tele Novella) based on Celia's life. There were a couple of Yoruba rituals that were referenced in the series. In regards to Beyonce, I haven't heard of her refer to herself as a reincarnation or rebirth of Oshun. If anything, she has been known to refer to herself as a daughter of Oshun. It was also mentioned that Ezili Dantor has similarities to Oshun, but in Haitian Vodun, it is actually Ezili Freda who has similar characteristics to Oshun, not Dantor. Also there is a misconception that people in ATR (African Tradition Religions) worship deities, however in practices such as Vodou they still believe and worship God. He is referred to as Bondye. Vodou is a monotheistic religion. In different practices, Lwas, Saints, and Angels are messengers of God and they also work on his behalf. In IFA, practitioners also believe in a supreme being.
My take on this is this. We are all human, and no matter what we worship and believe in. We are all mortal and we will pass from this plane. So that is something that a person will have to. deal with in the afterworld. Material things are great, blessings are great, but they are something that cannot go past this plane of existence.
THANK YOU KARINEEEEEE!!! For telling the truth about some of what these musicians worshippp. I enjoy all of your videos, and I pray the Lord bless you and continue to prosper you and what you do
i do think it’s okay to not generalize any faith as inherently bad. it’s all in the individual. everything is with intention and even christianity was used to instill fear in slaves and native peoples in america. but i also don’t believe every christian is bad. or someone of a faith i am not part of.
Yes! This part, respect for everyone’s faith. I am no longer “religious” I’m spiritual being. With that being said, I remember going to church and the thought was always, if the music is not praising God, it’s for the devil. I would’ve loved to have known I was shouting out Oshun whenever I sang “azúcar!” 😂
As a Cuban immigrant who grew up not far from Fort Lee, NJ, Celia Cruz, receiving the National Endowment for the Arts Award in 1994 given to her by President Clinton was a very proud for all Cubans. She was always a beacon of Cuban culture in exile representing the highest cultural achievements. She means so much to us Cubans and not one of us are indifferent to her achievements. Having said that there’s another Cuban singer that I would urge you to do a breakdown of called La Lupe. Lesser known than CC but nonetheless a powerhouse who unfortunately had a very tumultuous life with a tragic ending. In any case, I thank you so much for honoring CC in one of your videos. You put a smile on my despite watery eyes. Since she was so colorful, I’ll post multi-colored hearts. 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🖤🩶🤍🤎

Celia cruZ had the roght to her religious beliefs especially since it was a part of her culture. Whether you want to admit it or not Christianity was forced on a lot of pple of color and if those pple of color want to worship African spirituality that's their right
@@devanshepard9118 - You are correct that it was Celia's right; I never said it wasn't. I simply stated my hopes for her. Regarding forcing Christianity, on that topic you are incorrect. The first non-Jewish convert was an Ethiopian (a catch all phrase at the time for anyone "African"). He was not forced and helped spread the teachings of Christ. Wherever true Christians have taught Christ and His teachings believers willingly follow. Have false "Christians" manipulated the Bible for their own selfish and diabolical reasons??? YES! Have they committed atrocities in Jesus' name??? YES! The same thing can be said for every other religion out there. That said, only one has a leader whose own life was required to bring humans into correct fellowship with God. Assuming you are Black, and possibly ADOS, our history makes the subject of being a Christian even more difficult. I truly believe the heinous treatment we have received from so-called Christians and the rest of the world is not because WE'RE cursed but because THEY are. As you have stated, everyone has the right to believe what they want. They also have the right to the consequences of those beliefs.

Good for them for finding a religion that feels right and true to them and making music in honor of it.
This new form of hate towards Beyoncé is real don't understand why. All her haircare line people say is demonic like what lol shampoo? the ridiculousness. A woman that doesn't bother no one she must feel exhausted by it I know I am.
We love to pull that one fact about Christianity being practiced in Ethiopia in the middle age to prove that it was there before colonisation. But the reality is that most black people in continental America are west African descendants. And therefore those religions were imposed on them. There’s no need to sugar coat it we lost our way. Demonizing ancestral religion won’t make us look better…
I love Celia Cruz. She reminded me so much of my grandmother who I was very close to; once my grandmother passed when I was still very little, I saw Celia as one from afar… para-social a bit, but when growing up in the Latin community meant we usually only saw white faces and standards of beauty on TV, she was a big symbol that beauty does not have to be white-centered. When she passed, my son had just been born, I mourned her like a member of my family had gone from my life. She is still a huge influence in our Latinoamérican culture and community.
Thank you sister for making it clear that Christianity started in Ethiopia, thousands of years before white people were established in European nations🎉❤
I never knew this! I need to do more research on that. I'm like Karine on this. It really does irritate me when people say that Christianity is a white man religion as well. I know that my ancestors knew God before all these other religions came up.
The bible already said that. The Europeans didn't get Christianity until the new Testament. Apostle Paul spread the gospel to the other nations. People have to read the bible. Not just allow the pastors to interpret it.

Christianity ripped off a lot of religions before it, especially the gods of KMT / Egypt

Well pointed out elle

I am a black American🇺🇸 from the south, i became familiar with Celia Cruz as a college student in the early 2000s as a Spanish major. Love her music, read her autobiog, and adored her use of AZUCAR! to punctuate.
When it comes to other religions, we as black Americans have similar pockets of peoples who worship other deities, and growing up baptist/christian, there were whispers to stay away from those who practiced "vodun" or "worked roots" (using the elements of nature for good or ill)as it was called. Its interesting bc although my mom didnt grow up in church, she kept her children in church when we were young, but she still had "pagan" practices, using nature for healing and warding off negative spirits etc stemming from Africa/Native Americans and the deep south... probably even some old irish paganism mixed in as we are descendants of the TransAtlantic slave trade.🤷🏽♀️
Unless we read about these african gods, we wouldnt know much about them, theur sacrifice reqs, and how to worship them etc.

Not all Yoruba's are for Osun, only a few, it can also be very very evil.. be careful.
I never said that. People can be very evil yes. That’s a whole other convo ;)
As a Cuban, Thank You for covering her. ❤
My take on this is this. We are all human, and no matter what we worship and believe in. We are all mortal and we will pass from this plane. So that is something that a person will have to.
deal with in the afterworld. Material things are great, blessings are great, but they are something that cannot go past this plane of existence.

When she passed, my son had just been born, I mourned her like a member of my family had gone from my life. She is still a huge influence in our Latinoamérican culture and community.

I LOVE that you made this video. I am Cuban and Celia is indeed the queen of Salsa, all due respect to her legacy. With that said you are absolutely correct. Thank you for sharing this information, it is so important that we are aware of who we listen to.
Wow! I didn't know some of these things existed. Great job. 👏🏾
Omggggg a video on mi Tia Celia!!! (lol I always referred to her as an auntie 😂)😭 One of my grandmother’s favorite artists! We’re AfroColombian and she was always very loved by my fam as a musical legend and by the AfroLatin community in general and beyond!! ❤️❤️❤️🥰 Thank you for this video!
I love knowing she remained pure in her intentions for the world to feel her effervecense, religion grounded her spirit for light! Beautiful job. I have no children either, so this inspiration touches my heart. and I know it's strange to ask for this inspiaration of gospel music, and may have the wrong era, but Tramane Hawkins story and legacy burns me up and I want all her gospel music and diversity to be sung out loud!
Great video thanks for sharing this information!
