Seeing the Cuban flag being displayed at the most famous ballpark in history was so amazing. His brother Livan gave my Marlins a championship too. Legends.
+EricAKATheBelgianGuy Andy pettitte didn't juice. He took HGH and that was 2002, 4 years later. Pettitte sucked in 1998 anyways. And I don't see what being a convicted felon and a coke head has to do with steroids
Man it's great to see Joe Torre in the dugout, Bernie Williams in center, Jorge Posada behind the plate, and El Duque dealing with his high leg kick. Also, a baseball broadcast where every other utterance of the booth team *isn't* appended with shit like "Let's to the Lexus of Englewood scoreboard for the W.B. Mason Play of the Game, brought to you by Pizza Hut, the official carry-out pizza of the New York Yankees!"
Mene Tekel Yeah it's probably like that in all markets these days. Yankees radio broadcasts are particularly bad, almost everything is sponsored by some company, they can barely call the games anymore.
I am a Dodger fan, but I admire this amazing pitcher. Thank you Duque....!
He was really good. Orlando was 28-32 years(many experts say that he was 32 and lied when he said that he was 28 years old) when he played his first MLB game, because cubans players need to escape from Cuba to play in MLB. The guy was good pitcher when he was with the Yankees. El Duque had a lot of talent, it is not his fault that Cuban government has so many problems. His first baseball game in the baseball league of Cuba was in 1986 and his first season in MLB was the 1998 season. We didn't see the best years of Orlando, because he was old when he reached MLB.
Forget about "the boat". The most incredible part for him was finally being able to do what he loved to do. Prior to his defection he was banned from playing in Cuba and couldnt do so much as stepping into a gym. He could only run to stay in shape and maintain hope. So the significance of making his way to playing again cant even be explained.
The 30 For 30 story about what he went through in Cuba, and the risks he took to get out, is a fascinating, tear-jerker experience. With an incredible ending....as a Dad, as a human, and as a Yankees fan.
DIOS Bendiga a Orlando Hdez Pedroso mi Hijo por Gran Ser Humano y por ser un Gran Pitcher de las Grandes Liga de CUBA para el MUNDO Benduciones y BESOS ❤❤
This start comes off very Maddux like in hindsight. An average fastball velocity wise but with excellent movement and pin point control. Hernandez was getting weak contact all game long complete with great fielding from El Duque. The only thing missing was going the complete start on 80 pitches or so but it was the man's first ever MLB start afterall. I bet one could make a decent Cuban Maddux case out of his prime years in pinstripes after diving into his stats
Am I the only one who thinks its weird that announcers are talking about him having to escape Cuba just to play in MLB while fans are doing Cuban pride things? It's like risking your life crossing the DMZ and everyone around you says North Korea is the best.
It's actually weird but his brother Livian was in the major leagues first before Orlando but Orlando turned out to be the most popular and most famous out of the two brothers and you know why because he was with the most famous baseball team in history the new York Yankees 😊❤

1998. I will never forget that year. 114-48. Just one word. Incredible. There will never be another team like the 1998 Yankees. Never.
I agree. So many juicers in one team, there will never be another team like that.
+Mene Tekel name me one player on that team that was juicing
+EricAKATheBelgianGuy Andy pettitte didn't juice. He took HGH and that was 2002, 4 years later. Pettitte sucked in 1998 anyways. And I don't see what being a convicted felon and a coke head has to do with steroids
+EricAKATheBelgianGuy I'm not denying they were douchebags, I'm denying that they were all juicers. Being a juicer means you took steroids
Hernandez could really pitch when the post season came around
Everyone on my block was doing this leg kick after this game.
Haha I'm not a Yankees fan but what you said about the ads in the middle of the game is so true. Watching any older games feels refreshing.
Mene Tekel Yeah it's probably like that in all markets these days. Yankees radio broadcasts are particularly bad, almost everything is sponsored by some company, they can barely call the games anymore.
***** Wrong thread, buddy.
I loved El Duque! Can't believe this was almost 16 years ago...
23 now :)
surprise ~~26 years
I am a Dodger fan, but I admire this amazing pitcher.
Thank you Duque....!
Gracias.
Amazing pitcher and a very good person, he always takes care of his family...

As much as i did not like the yanks, this guy was a beast.
I don't think you guys remember Orlando Hernandez that well. He was a mediocre pitcher who was clutch in the playoffs.

@@MeneTekelUpharsin who?,you?
His stuff was filthy. Had he pitched his entire career with the Yanks, he could have won 200+ games and been an elite pitcher thru his career.
One of the most underrated Yankees in my lifetime
Because all the other names people say
He was great in the playoffs for us
Over twenty three years ago....Damn, how time flies.
:(
Look at those dance moves from the umpire at 1:14 😂
Kudos also to Posada for being helpful to El Duque and great teammate.
What a great 30 for 30 on "El Duque" and Livan. As usual.
That leg kick!
I like it at 2:17 when the narrator says 'Listen to the ovation'.
*commentator you douche.
+Cody no need for the "douche", o immature one.
incredible wind-up
He’s the very best.
2:01 is me! Homemade El Du K signs
Very proud of him.
His leg kick made him so special so unique so one of a kind sure lots of pitchers I've seen have leg kicks but not like Orlando Hernandez 😊

Fearless.
He had complete command of 7 pitches. Crazy. Four seam, two seam, sinking change, curve, slurve, slider, and eephus.
When he was on the Mets he got Ryan Howard on an eephus that was 46mph
My dad went to this game with my sister and my grandfather. I wish I was old enough at the time to see this game.

EL DUQUE EL PITCHER MAS INTELIGENTE D CUBA EN LAS GRANDES LIGAS EL MEJOR ARRIVA EL DUQUE.

I was at the game
Beast. Remind me of dontrelle willis.
Dam he beat the 98 Devil Rays are you shitting me wow!
Yankees fans praised him like he was a future hall of famer.
Mene Tekel Maybe it's because he was a clutch pitcher in the playoffs. Dumbass lmaoo
This game was also the return of Wade Boggs to Yankee Stadium as a Devil Ray.
Am I the only one who thinks its weird that announcers are talking about him having to escape Cuba just to play in MLB while fans are doing Cuban pride things? It's like risking your life crossing the DMZ and everyone around you says North Korea is the best.
1:16 the umpire thinks he’s Leslie Nielsen from Naked Gun
I miss that leg kick.
As a sox fan I hated facing him, he was clutch and was so glad when the white sox got him
Miss El Duque! He's like my cousin cause he's Cuban and I'm quarter Cuban
who is that nutty umpire
El Dookie was amazing.
el caballo
Who is the catcher? Looking great
It might be jorge posada not a hundred % sure though
That's correct. Number 20. Yankees Retired his number Aug 22, 2015.
Definitely Posada great homerun and high average hitting back catcher till this day i havent seen anyone duplicate his catching and hitting abilities
My dad went to this game.
who is here because of his new car in the show
The veronica game
Wasnt a superstar but a great big game pitcher
El DuKKKKKKK
use to love seeing these in old yankee stadium lol
It's actually weird but his brother Livian was in the major leagues first before Orlando but Orlando turned out to be the most popular and most famous out of the two brothers and you know why because he was with the most famous baseball team in history the new York Yankees 😊❤
