Roadwarden is an illustrated text-based RPG released in 2022 for PCs and Macs. It has been praised for its writing, worldbuilding, and the tools it used to support the stories it has to offer. The talk portrays the design philosophy behind Roadwarden, offering advice to those hoping to develop story-focused video games, and serving as a cautionary tale revealing the mistakes that slowed down the development process and hindered the game's sales.

27:32 Not saying Aureus IS wrong about any of this, but I hope people will consider the POSSIBILITY that he's wrong on some points. A different development process that doesn't rely on organic growth might have been more efficient, yes, but it also would have resulted in a different game. Possibly one where the story isn't as good, and that doesn't respond so richly to the player's actions.
I'd tell new developers to read up on best practices, and to watch lots of conference talks like this one. But at some point you have to just start development and start making mistakes. You can't learn from a mistake you don't make.
