Hi Everyone, Water Cooled vs Air Cooled - Porsche 996 v.s. Porsche 993 Comparison! Have you ever wondered about the differences between a Porsche air cooled engine and a water cooled engine? We dive in to compare the Porsche 996 Turbo to the 993 Carrera to what is different about these engines in these two series. What do you think?? Which is your favorite and why? Any questions or comments (or anything I missed) just leave them below. 😊 Thanks!! Franny
Like your reviews and in this case you correctly point out these are actually OIL cooled cars, and oil isn't as efficient at cooling as glycol/water is. I had a 996 Turbo for many years and would like to try a 993 Turbo.
What I really love about Porsches is that they are truly sentient machines, and connect with their owners on an emotional level, a bit like a dog. Most people didn't realise until they watched this video, that you can train your Porsche to start and accelerate just by hand signals! It's almost magical!
You couldn't have said it better. Water cooled Porsches lack that old school drama. All the smoothness and efficiency of today's engines is amazing and it's beautiful to see. However, the old ones have a kind of character, such a personality (although they are machines). That's a simple but necessary videos, a real life comparison.
The 3.2 Carrera has to be close to the best of all worlds. Still a bit of ruckus behind you, but a very derivable and reliable car. Nice exhaust note too.
@@HeidiandFranny I haven't had my '87 3.2 Targa for over two decades, and I still think about that car. The tune was one of its most lovable qualities, and it's a long list. I drove a 16 Targa a couple of years ago, and I felt so detached from the road, and all the electric buttons, and other 'modern' things, it was a huge disappointment.
I’ve owned both air- and water-cooled 911’s. Both fantastic, but another water-cooled advantage is their ability to rev higher than their older siblings. Especially the GT3 versions which have usable redlines of 8-9000 rpm! And the sounds they make are ferocious.
Very much enjoyed your video, with great explanation between the two cars. I have always loved the air cooled Porsches over the water cooled ones. It's the classic raw Porsche experience that the air cooled motors deliver to the driver, and I just love that air cooled Porsche sound through all levels of RPMs.
Really enjoyed this video. 1 of the best overviews of an air cooled vs. a 996 liquid cool 3.4L. I drive my 996 daily and prefer it to air cooled; does better sitting in traffic, hot summer day cruises and trips up the mountain.

Well done Ma’am...this is a lot better than most Porsche vids that were only interested in showcasing and entertaining the owners’ whims and fancies... Subbed....
I have a 993 Carrera 2. Whilst I appreciate why Porsche had to go water cooled (and now turbo for the mainstream models), there is just something special about the sound of the air cooled models and the way they drive which makes me stay with my 993 as a car which I drive for pleasure. Yes, my daily driver has a BMW badge but it's the 993 I drive to the Le Mans classic and it gives me entry into a special group of enthusiasts
Hi Paul, yup, that 993 really is something special! We may dip a toe into the BMW world in a bit... We might hit up all of our viewers for some advice. Thanks for your comment :)
I appreciate the air cooled very much on an old car not having to deal with a few extra systems. A knock against water cooled engines in older cars is that many owners simply neglect that system and don't change coolant. I got lucky with an old Corvette that was burning coolant in the combustion chamber, but many people have no idea they are driving with coolant leaking into the motor oil until it's too late. Also my old Jeep was neglected and the water pump vanes rusted out and broke into pieces sending clunks of rusted debris into the radiator clogging it. It took years to fully flush it all out and several ruined radiators. Something to think about as all cars age. The air cooled Porsche top end will probably pay the price in the end for being air cooled wearing out sooner on average than a water cooled car so it's a trade off.
Great video. During WWII the most powerfull and reliable plane engines were aircooled radial engines. No radiators, no waterpumps, hoses and so. In my 40+ years being a driver, I've owned and driven several aircooled cars. The main problem with all of them was heating the cabin. Some extracted heat from the exhaust and that was allways subject to rust, other tapped warm air from the engine, but that only started working after 20 km or so when te engine got warm. I prefer water cooled now, nice temperature in the cabin, smooth, silent running engine.
Another excellent video. In the past I had 3 VW bettles, a '56, '64 and '69. I froze in the first two in the winter and at times the windshield would freeze over, plus the auxiliary propane heater in the trunk on the '56 caught on fire once while driving so I had to pull over and put it out. Saying all that I love the sound of the VW engine as it revs up with gear changing. I am looking for a VW but this time targeting the Ghia or a Super Bug.
I prefer the air cooled engines because it's more easy to fix, looks like VW Beetles but with 2 more cylinders and sounds really nice, it's a historical sound. I like the watercooled engines too and I love Porsche, but for me, 993 was the best Porsche creation of all time and this masterpiece of German engineering too!! I live in Brazil, my dream is have a 993 one day... Nice video
Franny: I live in LA where bumper to bumper traffic for long periods of time is very common. Would the air cooled cars be more prone to overheating in in these situations? Your video was one of the most informative I have ever seen. Thank you!
Hi. This is Heidi. Water cooled is better for this reason for the heat and rush hour both. I think Franny would second me on this. If you have other questions, email us at our Heidi and Franny's Garage website listed in the description.
Great video with a fantastic clear explanation of the differences between the two engines. I learnt a lot from this and am grateful for the effort put in by the narrator.
I've had 3 x Aircooled (including a '75 turbo) and 5 water cooled 911's (+ 3 beetles which we wont count). If you remove the money and collectability side of things and just judge them on their own merits then the water cooled cars are in a different league, than the old air cooled. Power, handling, breaking and general livability is sooo much better. The newer cars truly are the 'one size fits all' family car that you can race at the weekend - which is what the 911 was designed to be all along.
Totally agree. I have a 996 and have owned and built air-cooled 911s. I do think the hydraulically assisted steering non-stability controlled manual shift on my 996 is way more fun than the new PDK electric steering cars with neuter-control though. And the two 1974 Porsche 914 2.0s I've owned are the best cars VW ever built. Actually Karmann Ghia built.
Welcome to the channel if you are new. I have friends in Oslo. At some point I hope to make it there (my great great grandparents were from Norway too). It looks very beautiful. Heidi
Maybe we are distant relatives? You may already know that Norway is great for driving trips. I suggest that when you visit Oslo, catch a domestic flight to the town of Alesund and spend a couple of days driving along the fiords and on the coastal roads of the area: www.heartmybackpack.com/more-og-romsdal/ Alesund is my hometown and I would be happy to help you with planning the routes and assisting you in getting transportation means to your liking. :)
The air cool cars have a lot more character, I love the sound of all the mechanical parts in harmony that make a Porsche stand out from every other sports car. "COOL" video!
@@HeidiandFranny I've watched your videos in the past and enjoyed them! This video convinced me to subscribe. I love Porsche! I appreciate your knowledge and experience 🙏 Stay safe and best wishes for the new year!! I also have to thank You Tube for recommending this video based on what I've been watching. 😁👍
I have an aircooled vw trike and a water-cooled volvo wagon , I see the benefits of both systems !...but air cooled are easier to maintain ! Love the video....keep up the good work
Yeah, not super surprising... There is a lady with a YT channel who sells Lambos. Now she really knows her stuff! I always ask the sales guy what car he/she drives. That usually gives me all the info I need ;)
I grew up with air cooled engines, so that's what I like the best. But there is a disadvantage to using air-heat exchangers for a heat source on the air cooled engines. The first time I hit a water puddle with the heat on in my new 1977 911S many years ago, the heated air turned into steam and immediately fogged up all the windows in my car. I had to lower the window and stick my head out to see where I was going! And of course it was raining hard on top of that. But I still love those air cooled engines best!
Oh, that's hilarious! I've never had that happen, but I do try to get the most out of the AC only to clear windows. Still, I really don't worry about the cooling system on the air-cooled cars. That has been the worst bit on the turbo!
Of course - I love them both. But I think the air cooled just has that "coolness" factor, no pun intended! But also - it seems that working on the 993 would be a lot more fun given that. Not that I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to have a 996 turbo. Great video and detail as always!
Excellent video. Not sure if you answered this already but was another downside of the aircooled engine higher temperatures of the heads meant that the engine had to be built to greater tolerances with larger gaps meaning that aircooled engine ate more oil/leaks?
Hi Nick, I hope you are feeling at least a little better? That does sound familiar. My cars don't seem to leak at the heads and I always thought the smoke on startup and oil usage was more due to the flat, boxer layout, but I bet you are right. The poor 993 hadn't run in a few weeks so it let loose quite a bit of white smoke when Heidi started it the first time... I'd love to know what that little squeal is just as it settles into a cold idle. None of the other cars do that. Probably the clutch accumulator or something. They all sound really different - that is the one thing that actually did change through the years... Wait,... what were we talking about? I think your flu is rubbing off on me... I hope you get better soon - it suck to be sick. F
Hi Thomas, Totally! That was a big problem on the 911 SC with those Dilavar studs. They were spec'ed to deal with different heat deltas from the exhaust vs. the intakes. They are a bit more hard (brittle) and have a nasty tendency to snap. The 3.2s don't have them I believe, but it is a concern on the SCs.
I don't think anyone could have done a better job of doing a first ever comparison between both engines. Great job ladies. Hopefully you can post a DIY on repairing/replacing illuminated door sills soon.
Hmmm... None of the cars have them, but we will keep our eye out. shmee150 has a recent video called: "My Porsche 911 GT3 is READY! | GARAGE" where he swaps out the lighted door sills on his new 911 GT3 if that is helpful...
Just really getting into Porsches, I bought a 986 and a 996. I'm 63 and had friends that had old bugs, air cooled when I was growing up. And they all had to be rebuilt way before 100,000. But I had a '62, '66, 68 VW bus... Everyone was cautioned against not getting a '73 or after bus cuz they went to the "pancake" engine they were called then because they also needed to be rebuilt but was 3 times the price. Heat was a joke. Came from the shroud with metal pipes carrying this warm air to the cabin with no fan... I've cussed too many times with no heat to speak of freezing.... Living in the south and you have to run your cars AC, couple that with city driving, depending on the oil to cool everything when your in stop and go traffic, sorry, it just won't last. I do like the old feel of the older Porsche's but I'll take the extra work,, hoses and not to mention HP... No one ever mentions that. My 2000 996 is perfect and for sale, and with 300 hp., she's not slow at all. Hit me if interested... But as I remind a buddy of mine, Porsche is smarter than us... Best cars on the road no matter what, Great video... New subscriber, but show us how they compare driving.. Thank...
Hi John, That is in the works... Whereas the Beetles and other VW (I had many) were a bit thin on heat, the 3.2, 993 and even the 356 are great. I've never been cold in those cars - all better than the MINI! Now, the AC... That's a different matter ;) Welcome to the channel! The 996 is an awesome car and those who poo-poo it haven't driven one. They are superior to the 993 is pretty much every way. But, I do love the 993 ;) F
Excellent video, many thanks. The air cooled progression to water cooled marks the point where Porsche’s stopped being VW beetles. The next step looks like they will abandon internal combustion altogether and go electric
Even though I'm on my second Porsche, both water cooled, there is something about the sound of that air-cooled Porsche flying by my house, they get my vote. I've also had the good fortune to drive air-cooled Porsche's as well. It may be that they were older as well and the driving experienced required me to be more (consistently) engaged. But then, I loved the sound of my 1966 VW Bug when I was a much younger person...
It is just such a different sound. The 356 sound is very different than the 3.2 which is different than the 993. Add induction and exhaust and there is no need for a radio ;)
Thank you for the fantastic video. The other difference between the two cars is the valve setup. The air cooled cars were all a single camshaft with two valves per cylinder. The water cooled cars had two camshafts per bank and four valves per cylinder. This was significant enough that the naturally aspirated cars produced over 300 horspower, something that the air cooled cars never could. Thanks for the great video.
That is a great point. I think it was Nick Murray who mentioned that the reduced metal in the heads due to the four valves meant less heat transfer along with increased power. Oil is just too thick and slow moving to carry away enough heat. Great point! F
@@HeidiandFranny oil does a fantastic job for cooling an engine, at first, it cools and lubricate all bearings and the other friction points of the engine plus on so designed engines, it cools the underside of the pistons so it absorbs a good part of the heat produced by the engine. On specific gas and diesel applications, the engine oil acts as the principal coolant. On a water cooled engine used on a continuous application as marine or stationary, it is not rare that an oil cooler is installed as a genuine equipment just beacuse the oil absorbs so much heat that a cooler is required to maintain it in an acceptable temperature range
I have a 1998 993 cab, and my girlfriend has a 1999 996 cab. I spend most of my time repairing the cooling system on hers. Way to many little rubber hoses, clamps and lines to leak. I just don’t like water cooled Porsches. I also have an early air cooled car which we built a 2.7 short stroke. 245 HP engine. It is built along the lines of the early R and weighs in the mid 1800 lbs. It is very mechanical sounding with its European Racing Headers and 991R muffler. Having to take care of 4 Porsche’s, one water cooled, the water cooled car requires the most maintenance, and has the most problems. I was sorry that Porsche was forced to switch over, but they were not going to be able to continue to pass the emissions and noise regulations.
One thing I thought you would touch on was how the two cycled heat so differently. What I mean by that is how the water cooled engines retain their heat. That was one of the problems with the air cooled engines, which is the main reason for the higher emissions. The air cooled engines just cooled down so quickly after sitting a little while, so it took longer to bring them back up to operating temperature.
I like the air-cooled engines. They remind me of the 1962 Beetle I had back in college. Three years before I was born, my father came across the Atlantic on a boat with that brand new Beetle. By the time I inherited it, it wasn't running and needed a rebuild, which I did myself. I had the engine out twice, but never had to split the case open. The old JC Whitney catalog was one of my best friends. I had that old engine sounding soooo good that about once every week or two, a stranger would stop me to complement it. Well finally, just before I graduated, I think it was at about 230k miles on the odometer, I got broad-sided by a pickup truck. Since then, I've owned only water-cooled engines. My whole life, I've always loved the sound of the air-cooled Porsche engines, and would love to own one. But I think the price-point has already escaped my means. Maybe I'll be able to get a replica 356 or 550 with a VW engine. That would still be awesome! Right now, I'm living vicariously through your UA-cam channel. Thanks for the great videos. ;o)
Oh, I really enjoyed your video of Nick's meet up! That really looked like a lot of fun. I know Nick was so busy he didn't have much of a chance to film. I'm glad you and Ted were able to put out fun videos! So, who do you think it was who got him sick?? Franny
As a VW beetle fun, I personally prefer the air cooled engine, that has a beautiful sound, although, for practical purposes, the water cooled is far way better. Adequate temperature control allows more efficiency and less pollution. Reasonably, it is a better engine.
Bart, it was a lifelong dream for me to own one two. Little did I believe I would somehow end up with four! Some of the 944 and 928s are a bargains right now if you are into classics. Hope your dreams come true! I am sure they will. Heidi.
Might be a bit late but this is by far the simplest comparison video for the 2 types of engines. I personally own a 991 Turbo and I'd like to own a 993 or 964 at some point. Nice work.
Driven both and I prefer the old school air cooled "folks" vagpn! If you've ever owned one of Ferd's creations you know there's a must for some not so cheap specific tools, and learning their proper uses, but even after all your tinkering be done ... Oh "ausgezeichnit" ... Carry on!
I found your channel a few hours ago and am watching a lot of your video's now. You really know how to convey your knowledge about cars (and RC planes). I am recommending your channel to my friends
This video, the water/air cooled video, was recommended by UA-cam to me, I think because I like to watch video's about classic cars a lot. After watching it and returning to the UA-cam home page I saw your video from 2012 with de Goldberg Valkyrie in the list of recommended video's. Having flown RC models myself, I watched that one also, and then I watched another, and another. And so on. Can't wait for your airplane channel!
Great comparison. I can't imagine picking one over the other. I'm actually glad there is a technical progression like that. Makes each generation special is its own way. The more variations just makes them more enjoyable I believe. Not having the heat so good in the air cooled cars makes driving them in the winter more of an event. Typically events make for better memories in my opinion. Unless its a breakdown event. :P
I like that, more of an event... That really is what is missing with the ease of modern cars. Easy makes them common and common can lead to boring. They do stuff, but so does my toaster... To each his (or her) own I suppose :)
Thumb UP ! very clean and understandable video, great job ! Personnaly, even in my 67 Mustang, i have a water cooled system, so as you said it's an "old school" stuff. I like you videos, keep continue, and Hello from Paris France !
such a great explanation - knowledgeable and simple - I prefer the 'old school' lovely 'tinny' sound of the air cooled engine. you always know when one is approaching.

Water cooled 911 are total headache when they are old.
There's just something about those little 993's that gets to me Everytime
Me too.
Thank you for the awesome explanation of air vs water-cooled engines.
Thanks Alex! Glad you liked it :)
Greetings from Norway! I would just like to compliment you on managing to make this complicated issue so easy to understand for everyone. Thanx
I love the air cooled engines; simpler and more elegant. The engine sound is part of the experience.
The air cool cars have a lot more character, I love the sound of all the mechanical parts in harmony that make a Porsche stand out from every other sports car. "COOL" video!
:) Thanks!
Love the video....keep up the good work
Personally, I don't care how it's cooled as long as the exhaust note can put "goosebumps" on my arm!
Great video. Whenever I asked the dealer about why they went to water cooling I could never get a straight answer. Thanks for clearing that up!
Yeah, not super surprising... There is a lady with a YT channel who sells Lambos. Now she really knows her stuff! I always ask the sales guy what car he/she drives. That usually gives me all the info I need ;)
have owned both, i still like the aircooled. my choice is the aircooled.
This was the first video that I've watched on your channel and WOW I'm impressed! Extremely well explained !!
I hope you check out some more! Thanks.
I like an air cool just because it's vintage and it's unique
Of course - I love them both. But I think the air cooled just has that "coolness" factor, no pun intended! But also - it seems that working on the 993 would be a lot more fun given that. Not that I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to have a 996 turbo.
Great video and detail as always!
Thank you!
This video was awesome! Well done, informative...and that air-cooled sound is incredible!
Bravo! Now I know why Porsche went for water cooling but I prefer the drama of an air-cooled car
I have a 96 Camry and it runs perfect: I pretend it's a 911 when I drive it 😃😃
Same best car ever is yours a 2.2 i4 or a v6
I have a v6 from a Camry in my mr2, I also do the same! It reminds me of the slant nose 930 Porsche in a way
I do the same with 2019 toyota prius...)))
I hate to break it to you guys but uhhhh
...that’s the dumbest thing I ever heard....)))
I'm late to the party, but hands down, air cooled =)
To me, its no longer a Porsche when it went water cooled.
Thanks for the explanation!
I do believe it was even more a concern with the 2.7l magnesium block
Both our current drives are liquid cooled VW’s but I’d love to have my old air-cooled beetle in the garage as well!
Great video. I have one of each. I have a 1984 3.2 Carrera and a 2002 Boxster S. Love them both.
I used to have a VW type 3. You’re right about the sound, though my car only made 65 hp on it’s best day. Still miss that car though.
Yep, many of us have car regrets. Maybe you should get another.
Heidi and Franny's Garage it’s on the bucket list. 😁😁😁
I spent a whole evening watching your videos. Great job.
Wow! Thank you so much!!
I had a '70 911T. Six carburetors. My favorite car of all. Those 130 horses felt like 230!
That's a different matter ;)
Welcome to the channel!
Very educational and well done video! Thank you!
Very good you kind of dumbed down for most people to understand good job
Thanks for the great videos. ;o)
Best muscle sounding cars
993 and the Ferrari 348 last of the best sounding cars
Terrific video! Great wealth of knowledge.
Oh, I really enjoyed your video of Nick's meet up! That really looked like a lot of fun. I know Nick was so busy he didn't have much of a chance to film. I'm glad you and Ted were able to put out fun videos!
So, who do you think it was who got him sick??
Franny
Great video. Really shows mechanical concepts.
Excellent. Straight to the subject matter and not trying to be cute and funny. Long may you upload. Clap-clap
Whether air cooled or water cooled as long as its a PORSCHE I'm good. Great video very informative thanks
As a VW beetle fun, I personally prefer the air cooled engine, that has a beautiful sound, although, for practical purposes, the water cooled is far way better. Adequate temperature control allows more efficiency and less pollution. Reasonably, it is a better engine.
I totally get you. We are 50-50% in that garage air to water. Pluses and minuses to both ;)
Another great video. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I dream of owning Porsche some day.
Bart, it was a lifelong dream for me to own one two. Little did I believe I would somehow end up with four! Some of the 944 and 928s are a bargains right now if you are into classics. Hope your dreams come true! I am sure they will. Heidi.
Great video! I remember going from my Beetle to the Golf Mark 1. Huge differences. The water cooled cat was so much more efficient!
Might be a bit late but this is by far the simplest comparison video for the 2 types of engines. I personally own a 991 Turbo and I'd like to own a 993 or 964 at some point. Nice work.
Thanks!
I really enjoyed the video. I used to have the air cooled volkswagens and i learned alot about the differences.
Driven both and I prefer the old school air cooled "folks" vagpn! If you've ever owned one of Ferd's creations you know there's a must for some not so cheap specific tools, and learning their proper uses, but even after all your tinkering be done ... Oh
"ausgezeichnit" ... Carry on!
I like your presentation skills on the subject matter in all your vids... learning a lot from you
brilliant video. clearly explained...thanks very much
Great video. Air-cooled for me. I formerly had a 1993 C2....wish I had never sold it.
Was very informational. Have been wondering why they made the switch. Thanks for this :)
Never saw a direct comparison like this before. Thanks!
You bet. We will be doing more.
I found your channel a few hours ago and am watching a lot of your video's now. You really know how to convey your knowledge about cars (and RC planes). I am recommending your channel to my friends
Wow, thanks Ed. We are going to be starting a separate airplane channel soon. Did you find us through car or through airplane? Just curious.
Cool.
Thanks so much, brilliant video and great speaker!
Thank you!
Air-cooled FTW.... I have a Multistrada 1000 Ducati, air-cooled, dry clutch... love it.
Great video and great to see some ladies up IN THE HOUSE.
Awesome! I bet that is quick ;)
Not as fast as my Triumph Triples but sooo much fun. And so much character.
Thumb UP ! very clean and understandable video, great job !
Air cooled Porsche has my heart.
A very well thought video. Thorough. Thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
