I have some 10 different recordings of The Magic Flute (my favourite opera, Mozart, more than a passion, is a religion to me), but I seldom listen to the others, I keep going back to Solti’s, because of Hermann Prey’s Papageno. He had a smile in his voice. 💕

He had a pretty rich speaking voice. I honestly think he could have done like Ruggero Raimondi and played more bass roles, as his voice was every bit as deep as Raimondi's, but thankfully he utilized every ounce of range he had. I mean, he played 2 both Figaro roles, and was praised for both. Just the absolute ideal baritone voice to me.

Just like me! This particular version of "The Barber of Seville" was the very first opera I saw in my life. I was 10 years old then: I'm 44 now, and my debt to Hermann Prey is still rising... and rising... and rising...

That's a nice appraisal. Though it doesn't surprise me. Prey was the first Figaro I heard (if only recorded) and I always missed something with others.

This performance is so nice, It really encapsulates the energy that I believe Figaro has... the face of Prey is so expressive, he denotes so much energy, I wake up to this everyday!

La storica e insuperata edizione diretta da Abbado con la regia di Ponnelle. Prey è più "furbo" e meno "macho" di altri, perfetto per l'idea generale dell'opera.
hermann è uno dei migliori Figaro che esistano, andatevi a guardare anche l'opera intera di questo spezzone, è del 1971, la migliore esistente!

herman prey always a pleasure to listen to and one of my all time favorite baritones. amazing high notes resulting from great technique and a beautiful voice. like lyric version of lawrence tibbett. just listen to that wonderful nasal pharengeal resonance in the sound, would that all singers could discover it.

Well, I think it's fabulous! I play it almost daily and I have the DVd too and [lay tho whple opera regularly. I've seen it at the theatre twice and am ready to see it again [when it comes around again]...Love the late Hermann,,,fab voice...

Credo che Rossini ha scritto Il Barbiere specialmente per Hermann Prey. La sua leggerezza fa volare. Anchio ho comprato DVD con la versione 1972 e per me non esiste piu niente. Bravo Hermann!
