    Maybe the quirkiest rhythm section... and one of the greatest in rock/prog rock. Rutherford is underrated generally in the Bass World. His unique style and approach really embodied the ethos of English classical prog rock of the time where new sounds and the freedom to create and explore your own thing was huge. Rutherford did that along with Squire and Schulman, Levin etc. Listen to the crazy unorthodox little runs and pick-work that no one does quite like he did. He had his own mind...always loved him.

    Their best album as the trio. This track shows the brilliant drumming of Phil Collins with a SINGLE bass drum pedal and Mike’s unique Moog bass pedals and bass guitar. A very special rhythm unit. No wonder Steve Hackett used them on his first solo album “Voyage of the Acolyte”.

      Yes. Obviously, I've neglected this channel for a while, but I will do some more soon. I've already messed around with Back in NYC, and I don't think it's possible to get the drums out of that one. The 5.1 mix is all I have to work with, and Back in NYC is mixed a bit differently than most of the other songs in way that makes it hard to isolate anything. I've tried Los Endos, too. I can get the drums and bass out of that one, but that track is so terribly disfigured by compression/limiting that the drums sound broken.

      I thought the same thing and immediately started thinking about other Genesis songs from all eras. The same can probably be said. The bass pedal played an obvious role early on and as the albums progress (and music technology and their style progresses) the pedal shifts into a more implicit role where you don’t realize it’s there often. But it’s also probably cause they started using more synthesized sounds on the Taurus that blend with the synths (idk… something to talk about from the physics of sound perspective)

  • @ArchieBC

    There’s so much going on here. The level of mastery is not displayed in the notes being played, but the ease that Phil expresses them.

    Nice isolation. Love this track from a fine album. Saw Genesis do this song as an opener in 1981. Collins incredible on drums playing along with Chester Thompson. It's good that on this isolation, that both the Taurus bass pedals and the bass guitar can be clearly heard. Many thanks.

    Some of the Phil C vocal overdubs that pop in (at the forefront here in the stereo difference) help put the humor of Genesis in perspective. Watch Phil’s camcorder footage from the Mama sessions for evidence. I love how stereo difference makes things sound ‘unmastered’ and live.

    There are pictures of the "Duke" sessions, where it is revealed that Mike used an Alembic bass, so it's safe to say that that's what we're hearing here.

    • @jamesa.1345
      @jamesa.1345 5 років тому +1

      Hmm I believe you, but I don't think its the Alembic on this track.. I've got a Shergold modulator with the recording module and it can nail this kind of tone quite easily. I could be wrong though as I have zero experience with Alembics..

    • @world_of_max.g
      @world_of_max.g 4 роки тому +1

      I believe the Alembic Series 1 appears on some of the other, shorter tracks later on in the album. This does sound like the Shergold. The Alembic does have a slightly different tone. On a different note, I have a strong feeling that the little guitar solo here is done by either the Roland GS500 or the Ibanez AR2622.

    • @RastaSaiyaman
      @RastaSaiyaman 4 роки тому +1

      @@world_of_max.g Mike said in interviews that he didn't use his double necks in the studio because of them being heavy and that his main studio guitar at the time was a Sunburst Fender Stratocaster which he also use for the Duke tour as his main stage guitar.

      @world_of_max.g 4 роки тому

      @@RastaSaiyaman Ah yes, that gorgeous looking 1977/78 sunburst Stratocaster (used a lot in that period and heavily featured in the TSL film). It is highly possible that did the solo, but to my ears, it does sound like either the Roland or the Ibanez. It's also highly possible Mike just used the bottom half of the Shergold double neck, as it was designed to be detached and used separately. Who knows.

    • @RastaSaiyaman
      @RastaSaiyaman 4 роки тому

      @@world_of_max.g Mike did mention in interviews that he uses stratocasters because "it feels wrong to use anything else."

    the snare drum is not really good when i listened to my original cd (in 1980 and remastered in 1994) the snare drum was agressive, the bass drum was modern , the sounds of the toms were fantastic .WIth the new original mix it's cool but all the agressive sound is now forgotten to a boring pop sound without the aggressive sound of the beginning but i supposed the others were ok with that
