    I think this might be one of the most important videos i've ever seen. I'm an athiest and even an anti-theist, I've been binging his videos and here Seth presented the best argument I've ever heard for being nice about it instead of openly hostile. I still feel a lot of anger towards religion, but maybe I can be kind and honest about how I feel instead of taking out that anger on people who likely are good people in a bad place instead of assuming they must boe rotten to the core. It's at least worth giving a chance, I don't think that frustration will ever go away but I can try to focus it somewhere other than random people who argue with me

    Best I can afford is a thumbs up on UA-cam and a comment. This was uplifting to an old man who understands Seth's fatigue. I have been housebound for the last seven months for health reasons and online or asleep for that period. The signs I see are not good but like you both said, the young educated give me hope. I started questions at the age of eight and quickly learned that organized religion is a tool that is totally authoritarian and was indefensible. That led me to doubt religion as a whole. After 62 more years of questions, I am mostly atheist but recognize that the story of Christ is not a bad lesson and a decent foundation for morality, yet organized religions of all sorts have used and abused that message for evil nearly two thousand years. Much of that seems to be the doing of his disciples who built "his church" on the merger of the old testament and the new testament. My moment that I work from now is that Christ if real was the Second Covenant with man as I was taught, but also that means the new testament is a total replacement of the old testament and all of that must be thrown out to be a real Christian. So some days I am atheist and other days I am Christian but with a new meaning. Yet I still struggle with the whole concept of religion and an afterlife. And I am rock solid that organized religion has been used to enslave the people in an Authoritarian trap and is responsible for the vast majority of evil in this world. From the beginning of man up to the murder of a six year old boy and the stabbing of his mother just this past weekend. The quest continues.

      You are on the right track in saying that the OT should be discarded from the Christian canon, and so should some parts of the NT which tried to soften the break with the old. Keep going. Careful reading of the Gospels will reveal the real Jesus and his messages. Forget the dogmas.

    There are a spectrum of people and a spectrum of beliefs and personalities. Each person has a way that works best to help them change their minds. There is a place for mockery, ridicule, and there is a place for kindness and handholding. I tend to go for the hand holding, caring, empathetic approach, but I also see that mockery and such helps too.

      Much like the fascism, authoritarianism, and dictatorships Europe experienced most manifested in Adolf Hitler's reign; Europe experienced the Dark Ages and thus experienced how society is held back by organized religion, how it's used as a tool to press the masses, especially.when coupled with politics, etc, which is why countries like Germany are so against these things. Much like Japan where the practices of organized religion are practiced more as part of their culture than having any faith; most Europeans have done the same with their religion. One has to wonder what it will take for the Americas to likewise see how organized religion can be a threat to society, and how letting go of the literalism can enable organized religion to let go of their baggage, and still be something that brings a segment of society together.

    • @ernestmac13
      @ernestmac13 Рік тому +4

      I do have to disagree with Seth about Religion not being a form of mental illness; as conspiracy theorists and religious extremists have shown belief and faith can result in the same degree of anxiety, fear, and even depression seen in mental illness, and like mental illness, the fear and conspiracy that all to often underpins organized faith can in of themselves cause anxiety and depression so severe as to cause auditory and visual hallucinations.
      I come at this from the medical side due to having a sibling who developed ALS and dementia along with it, which caused an anxiety disorder that caused auditory hallucinations. His therapist explained to me how anxiety and depression can cause hallucinations. This is the scary thing about organized religion as it's anonymity of being part of a collective (God told me to die it), the belief one is among the chosen, etc, can like social media encourage sociopathy and or narcissistic behavior in those susceptible to developing it, and the fear driven aspect of organized religion can induce paranoia, depression, and anxiety, all forms of mental illness, just like belief in conspiracy theories can do the same.

      Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating. He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment: He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. (Matthew 15:4-7)
      Abandon your wife and children for Jesus and he’ll give your a big reward. Jesus asks that his followers abandon their children to follow him. To leave your child is abuse, it’s called neglect, pure and simple. (Matthew 19:29)
      Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law. (Mark 7:9)
      Jesus says, “Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace on earth! No, rather a sword lf you love your father, mother, sister, brother, more than me, you are not worthy of being mine. “The real beauty of this verse is that Jesus demands people truly love him more then they love their own family. I ask you how can we love someone that we can not see or interact with? Love is an emotion pertaining to physical existence not to faithful ideologies, yet God threatens you with death just because your love for your mother maybe stronger than your love for him. My question still holds though, if there is no judgement and no punishment then how can we advance as a species if there is no God or afterlife ? I don't see any leading Atheists taking a stand and proactively rooting out evil ? Most seem to just want you to enjoy life and ignore war, murder, crime and geopolitical sabre rattling. America enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world ( as do we in UK),largely because of it's military might. Why don't atheists put their money where their mouths are and actively fight evil or at least address it instead of shrugging it off as some sort of unpleasant hangover from our evolutionary past ? And the only reason for such belief is that they were born to that particular version of christianity/judeism/islam/hinduism etc.

It bewildered President Carter, too. We are forced to choose accepting God, or, staying with Satan. Most are going to stay with Satan. He is still talking them into staying with him. But you have to make your own choice! Forget the people, here, but stick to God ( first and always ) in their place. Because there may not be a Hell? It may lead to ashes and nothing-ness? The illusion of this Universe keeps us isolated, no one else can get in, and we can't get out. WE can not win here! These others will hate and want to kill us. But, we can have a place in a better life through Christ, eventually. We are better off with the belief in God, than we can ever be, here, without the hope in Him. Study again, for yourself, try to be positive this time, ( not negative to it ). In the Bible, the United States is not one of the "good guys," and neither is the Israel of today! That fact is widely evident all around the world in every human culture. It's way too fragmented, with tons and tons of noisy gibberish piled up where the simple and rational Christian Faith used to be.
      In other words, what used to be Christianity is no longer there, just like what used to be Conservativism is no longer there, and what used to be the Republican Party is no longer there.
      Instead, we have one giant circus full of clowns participating in various spectacles, where Christianity, Conservativism and the Republican politics are placed on a regular, daily schedule (for now).
      All that the "evil" atheists need to do is wait for the people to get tired of the circus, and the entire cacophony of moral insanity will simply fall apart.

      There is no atheist ideology beyond the belief that god does not exist. That's it.
