To think that this is done hundreds of times, with such ease and a sense of normality, in a modern digital studio on a laptop.

Eh, nah. I mean if you enjoy listening to pro tools driven vanilla recordings, sure. Otherwise, tape edits are necessary.

I don't think tape is some magical shortcut to making great music. Lots of people made pretty vanilla recordings on tape as well.
