I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work. Thank you for mentioning the lack of audio upgrades in these catalog titles. I completely stopped buying 4K catalog titles if there isn’t a audio upgrade.
I share the same desire for upgraded audio- but you're missing out on some gems. Lots of 4k titles where audio upgrade wouldn't have done much anyway and the visual upgrade is amazing. Your $ though, so keep doing you 🙂
I wish that all studios, who are going to put a movie onto the 4K market & have a poor original source. Make the hard decision and not release the film. I was looking forward to Planes & Platoon this year but after reviews decided not to invest in these classics. Great video Adam. New collectors into the 4K format should always do there research
Thanks for the list Adam. This helps tremendously in not waisting money and time. Platoon and Saturday Night Fever are big disappointments for me as I would have picked those up. Giant too.
Happiest of holidays and thanks for the videos and honest reviews. I was not happy that the colorized version of Its A Wonderful Life was not done on the 4K disc, Just the original black and white was done in 4K. The delay/glitch in the Blu-Ray from Disney/Apple for the Peter Jackson “Get Back” was handled very poorly! Also where is the 4K version of this???? Also A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation 4K pictures are great,, but what does it take to finally get an audio upgrade for both???!
Almost picked up Platoon. So glad I never did after hearing so many people talk about the quality. I did buy The Craft, and to be honest, I didn’t think it looked too bad.
I wasn't ever a big fan of the film, so i didn't even consider buying- BUT i remember seeing people argue over quality intensely at time of release. Made me wonder if certain copies were messed up or if whatever was wrong may have shown more on certain setups (an artifiact that shows up more on oled and not so much on led- something like that?).
Bravo Paramount with the most entry, they really like their DNR I guess. I hope james cameron catalog like the abyss are not waxy and DNR ' ed like T2. I got POTC 4k and half way I noticed something wrong glad they include the original blu-ray which is the best version
Hey Adam! When it comes to Paramount 4K catalog titles I buy them from iTunes Movies when they are less than 10 bucks. Watching Curse of the Black Pearl was like watching it wearing sunglasses. Happy Holidays to You My Man!
As an Elvis-fan, I am very happy Paramount did a very good job with the 4K transfer of Blue Hawaii; so they know how to do a good transfer. Here's hopin' for more Elvis-films on 4K!
I totally agree that all 4k's should have Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. It gives me the feeling that they're gonna put out ANOTHER release in the future with the updated audio so they can make MORE money.
I just bought the Bluray copy of Platoon. I never bothered buying any of those movies in 4k that are on your list because they are not interesting movies to me. I am very selective. The movies that I have bought in 4K are quite good and I had no issues with them.
Are the Disney 4k streaming versions of Pirates really different than the disc version? I see on Vudu they have 4k versions for all films. You think the 4k editions for Pirates 2 and 3 are the same ones on Disney+? Or did someone else do them?
A great list mate. I’m especially disappointed to hear about platoon and Saturday night fever, two titles I was looking forward to on 4K, I’ll certainly pass on them now. Thanks for sharing buddy, take care 🙌💿💿💿
The shame about PLANES, TRAINS is that Hughes' visual style really expanded with this movie; along with SHE'S HAVING A BABY, it's the most stylish of his films.
Thanks.. almost bought the Starship Troopers steelcrapbook version.. glad i decided to wait for the whole 3 movie set .. hopefully they will fix the issues for that one!!
Heat was a controversial release on 4k this year, I didn't think it was too bad persinally, but I can get some comments saying its overly dark, dosent really pop and the HDR makes day time scenes look dusk, I personally felt a little underwhelmed with it despite the overall extra resolution and clarity, I felt this should of been a winner to compliment the 1080p definitive edition disc, the HDR didn't really improve things vastly from the blu ray that I could see, it appeared more grey and a little flat in alot of scenes, the same sound mix was imported over too but no issue there really as its a solid audio but could of benefited more from Dolby Vision and an Atmos track!
A pretty good selection. I've seen a lot of the ones you mentioned and agree that they are problematic or downright poor. I'd add anything colour graded by VDM Labs in France, particularly StudioCanal titles. I'm particularly talking about Red Sonja and Raw Deal. The scans are fine but the colour gradings are totally sh1thouse. Silver Salt Restoration in the UK also do work for StudioCanal and do amazing work and don't screw up the colour grading. For example their work on Don't Look Now, The Servant and The Ladykillers was exceptional. So maybe StudioCanal need to send some UK colour graders over to France to show them how to do it properly and to respect the original intent of the cinematographer. Red Sonja and Raw Deal on 4k now look like digitally rendered video game cut scenes. Just totally awful and very disappointing. I don't know why they even bothered, they may as well have just stuck to blu ray because those older scans in 2k look far superior to these new 4k efforts (or lack thereof).
Is the Fatal Attraction that Studio Canal in UK put out any better? I bought the box set they put out. Honestly bought for the box set and not 4K. As far my worst, I don't buy 4K unless I got the release for other reasons like packaging. Not a fan of 4K.
I have 4 Blu ray players on my new collection. They all last about 6 to 9 months before they start breaking down. Yes 4k, Blu ray are best experience but does no good to buy the better disc if the players are a piece of crap. Maybe I should do a video, I sure this is a world wide issue. What they don't really make money off the disc, buy it once lasts a lifetime. They make money selling crappy players you have to buy over and over again
@@buzzyboy7599 When the bluray that comes with the 4k sounds better than the 4k how can you say that? Disco music is supposed to thump the subwoofer and this 4k didn't.
Thankfully I was able to avoid all these thanks to reviews. I got the platoon 4K digital about a year ago and I thought it looked pretty bad, was wondering if it was the stream. Sounds like the disk was just as bad
Same goes for that Platoon steelbook, it's the DNR wax transfer as well. His advice about sticking to the Pre-steelbook BR and the 4K is correct, that release is a beautiful transfer that works just fine.
I didn’t upgrade Giant Blu ray. If there’s a James Dean 4k Boxset with his other films, I’ll pick it up. The worse thing about picking up a bad 4k disc is paying full price for it. Bad 4k’s are best at pick up on a sale. ..like a real sale $5.99 sale lol
How do you check the bitrate on a 4k? When I hit display on my remote, it shows input and output, so to speak. I see around 4 Mbps in the input but nothing showing in the output end. I'm wondering is there something wrong?
Not all players will show the video bitrate. 4 Mbps is your audio output. A 4k disc shouldn't go under 65 Mbps but it all depends on how good the compression was optimized you can have lower bitrates but still have less compression artifacts than a higher bitrate encode.
The 4K disc that I am most disappointed with this year was the classic Holiday Inn with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. I strained to see any difference between that and the Blu-ray and I really could not which is just sad because this is one of my favorite holiday movies. I love this more than I even love white Christmas.
I wonder if DNR is a cost saving measure. Compression probably hates grain so they DNR it, it takes up less space, smaller disc, less data that has to be streamed?
Yeah, Paramount 4Ks aren't safe to buy. I wait for reviews on those (I usually do that anyway). Sony/Columbia on the other hand put out one banging 4K restoration after another.
Hi, what is your opinion about your 65” OLED TV in contrast with Panasonic Plasmas if you have used any in the past? OLED delivers that organic picture after dimming the room? Don’t you think 100” 4k projector will churn more juice from 35/70 mm transfers like movies till Shawshank Redemption or Fight Club? We need panel brightness since The Matrix effects era I think
Ive only seen plasmas in stores, the 1rst one I ever saw was 10$k in sears 20 years ago. My C9 oled is magnificent in every respect. But it only shows as good as its content. My 65" OLED TV's image just hovers in the room once i turn off the lights. I have black curtains around my room to add to the effect. OLED has true blacks, can't see any bars before or above image when there is letterbox. OLED will give better performance for dark scenes and black levels but it's extremely expensive the larger you go. 65" is the limit of affordability for me. Would love a 83" OLED or larger but too expensive. If you have the room for large projector/screen then may be worth going that route. In my normal sized room (18ft x 10ft x 9 ft), 65 inch OLED properly positioned is spectacular in a darkened room.
Did Disney fix the Pirates 4k? I saw now where they are releasing the whole series on 4k and remembered how Curse was rated, soo wondering if they fixed it or just made more of the same crap?
A bad Blu ray or 4K transfer is companies shooting themselves in the foot. The whole idea of a higher res format means superior to DVD. And 4K is supposed to be superior to blu ray. No exceptions. Selling me anything less than that is consumer fraud and a rip off. Imagine getting repeatedly burned on "wax fests" when you are promised ultra high def. "We know the specs say that your pickup truck has a 335 horsepower v8 for towing 7000lbs, but it's actually a 2.6 liter 4 cylinder with 160 hp for towing 3,000lbs" Wait...what?
Poltergeist should not be on this list. It was a fabulous 4K. I disagree with you whole heartedly on upgrading audio. With films that are 30+ years old, they need to stay 2.0 or even mono tracks, because those are the authentic ways in which those films were heard. When you make new mixes of mono tracks or even 2.0 stereo tracks, you always lose something.
The 4K is the “best” version to get on home media. No version on any home format is ideal due to the source, but the 4K is arguably the version to get.
I'm genuinely surprised Planes, Trains, & Automobiles is on this list. I bought the 4K and it looks fantastic. It's so beautiful that I was overjoyed with how great it looked. I don't like any of the other films you mentioned. So I can't comment on those.
Ugh Platoon was a massive let down, it's quite possibly my favorite war film and was dying for a 4K release and holy cow, I was stunned at how waxy and almost rubbery it looks. What a let down.
Regarding Planes, Trains and Automobiles I will say that while the UHD-BD is disappointing, it's easy to forget just how awful the regular Blu-Ray was. In that sense it's still a big upgrade and much more pleasing way to enjoy the film, but of course far from as good what I'd like it to be.
Thanks for this list…I just bought Giant but haven’t watched it. I love the movie so I’m ok with it not being 💯 but still disappointing to hear this. I’ve been wanting Fatal Attraction but not now after hearing this…I’ll buy the blu ray instead. Thanks again very informative.
When I put together 4Ks to review, I do have to gauge interest if it’s worth the time to do one. Not including watching the movie, it takes several hours to put a video together. If I don’t see interest online for a title then in most cases that means people won’t tune in to the review when I post it. Sound of Metal unfortunately is one of those.
@@MovieGuy365 that's sad. The movie and actors were nominated at all the film awards shows. You being such a movie enthusiasts should watch this movie. You won't be disappointed. From one movie lover to another.
If you like the movie The Lost Boys, I recommend that one. It's probably the most surprising upgrade of 2022 for me out of the 30 or so movies I've purchased in 4k this year.
Usually with top ten list if I don't have all the movies on the list I'll try to get them. I was glad to find I only own one of the movies on this list (Platoon)!
Good list. I actually think Pirates is a worst 4k than T2. Yeah T2 they ruined the color timing with a red tint. But fundamentally speaking pirates is a worse 4k.
Great review, thanks! *** Yes, it's amazing how often 4K is very disappointing! It's almost like blackmail "under the slogan of progress"... By the way, in certain cases, the movie on DVD disc looks better than on Blu-Ray or 4K... It's crazy but it's true. Certainly on DVD the colors are much nicer/warmer than on Blu-Ray which often looks very cold and unpleasant! *** So, do I really have to spend the money all the time? Keep buying and buying new versions??????????
*Saturday Night Fever* seems to be the one that everyone universally is like "Heh... ?" same with *Planes, Trains & Automobiles.* Oddly enough, I don't have any of these LOL! *The Color of Money* needs to be done in 4K so badly, as that BD is absolutely atrocious and a shame. Since it would be Disney, though, don't get hopes up for any DV encoding in physical media. It would still be nice to have something replace that terrible BD.
DNR can serve a purpose if used sparingly or responsibly. But it seems many of these big studios and some boutiques overly rely on it to clean up entire movie prints and scrub their grain when they shouldn't. This can often enhance certain transfers with sharpness and contrast but remove any fine details at the same time. You'll likely lose more than minor imperfections and blemishes.
I’ll be honest I have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to the Craft it looks outstanding picture quality sound was on point at least from my experience it worked great.
I was disappointed by many of these, but probably most so for Pirates of the Caribbean. I've loved that movie ever since I first saw it in the theater, and it COULD have looked FANTASTIC on 4K (which was my hope, of course). I pre-ordered it, but since I didn't trust Disney, I kept it sealed. Sure enough, when the screenshots and reviews came out, I saw that the 4K was so badly handled that it actually looks significantly WORSE than the Blu Ray! I was heartbroken and incredibly disappointed and returned the 4K :(
one to add is Double Indemnity. The 4k is not as good as the blu-ray. Not sure about the source material, but it was horrible and a wasted purchase. I will watch the blu-ray going forward.
All the other Pirates of the Caribbean movies are on 4k in different parts of the world. People say the other 4 movies looks miles better than the first move.
Agree with you on the majority of these title. Planes, Trains....Fatal...Platoon and SNF very disappointing and Paramount the worse big studio (along with Disney)
Heat 4K was it for me. It looks better on digital than it did on 4K. Normally I get rid of my Blu-ray disc when I buy the 4k version but in this case I kept it.
The only film I can think of that I've got in my collection that I feel is a real letdown, is Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country. Next time I watch it, I'll watch the blu ray version instead. It was like watching a bad dvd
You have included dome poor quality discs. Regarding Pirates - get the five disc set from Australia - first one is still bad but the other films were good.
My disappointment was Bram Stokers Dracula Steelbook, it says double vision but I think it could have looked a whole lot better, it was very disappointing
Odd that Fatal Attraction looked egregiously DNR'd, when the PP blu ray that derived from the 4k mastered OCN is nice and grainy. And Disney has become a physical media bulldozer... they just destroy every movie they put out. With weak audio, and questionable video mastering. Sad that they used to be a physical media dynamo back in the DVD and blu ray days.
Agree with your selections. Paramount in particular are hopeless. Some of their 4k masters may be OK for streaming - but they aren't acceptable for physical media. We pay the premium for 4k disc quality. Paramount aren't delivering. They need to sort themselves out or get out of the 4k physical media business and license out.
I thought the steel book of Starship Troopers was a really poor quality picture. I have never owned it on 4k before and heard the original 4k wasn't good but I was hoping they had polished it up for the steel book. It was just a very blurry picture.
I see in the comments that Paramount has come up in not very glowing terms. I got the new Pulp Fiction 4K combo, it's from Paramount. Should I be worried?

Would love a 83" OLED or larger but too expensive. If you have the room for large projector/screen then may be worth going that route. In my normal sized room (18ft x 10ft x 9 ft), 65 inch OLED properly positioned is spectacular in a darkened room.
Hello-
its interesting he mentioned Giant first. when it was released this past April i was totally unimpressed with it as a 4K disc.
I think upgraded audio is a good thing as long as the original audio is included, everyone wins. BTW, Poltergeist wasn’t on the actual list.
I've never owned The Changeling, do you recommend the 4k for a first time buy or is there an older release that's better?
The 4K is the “best” version to get on home media. No version on any home format is ideal due to the source, but the 4K is arguably the version to get.
I recommend it also, just be ready to adjust the hue. Overly red skin tones are a problem.
Thanks
I'm genuinely surprised Planes, Trains, & Automobiles is on this list. I bought the 4K and it looks fantastic. It's so beautiful that I was overjoyed with how great it looked.
I don't like any of the other films you mentioned. So I can't comment on those.
I know It was not released this year but I'm still disappointed with the Lord of the Rings on 4k. I can't get over it lol
Ugh Platoon was a massive let down, it's quite possibly my favorite war film and was dying for a 4K release and holy cow, I was stunned at how waxy and almost rubbery it looks. What a let down.
Thank you Adam.
Such a shame about Planes, Trains & Automobiles, I was looking forward to that for ages.
Re Pirates of the Caribbean: doesn't matter how good the picture and sound may be, the film is still a turkey.
When are you going to do a review of the film Sound of Metal on 4K, Thanks?
When I put together 4Ks to review, I do have to gauge interest if it’s worth the time to do one. Not including watching the movie, it takes several hours to put a video together. If I don’t see interest online for a title then in most cases that means people won’t tune in to the review when I post it. Sound of Metal unfortunately is one of those.
@@MovieGuy365 that's sad. The movie and actors were nominated at all the film awards shows. You being such a movie enthusiasts should watch this movie. You won't be disappointed. From one movie lover to another.
@@5000gmoney I’ve seen it, it’s fantastic. I do think more people should see it.
@@MovieGuy365 just wondering if I should buy it in Blu-ray or 4K. Unfortunately there no reviews on social media 😕
Get the 4K. Picture is very clear and a solid color grading over the blu.
So sad to see the subpar 4K version of Pirates of The Caribbean by Disney. One of my favorite movies. Deserved better.
Can't wait to see the best of 2022!!!!!
If you like the movie The Lost Boys, I recommend that one. It's probably the most surprising upgrade of 2022 for me out of the 30 or so movies I've purchased in 4k this year.
I have 2 videos coming up with the best of 2022: catalog and new releases.
@@dr.emilschaffhausen4683 that's cool. Thank you!
Platoon was an absolute disaster! Don’t know Stone was thinking about.
He was Stoned.😂
*Saturday Night Fever* seems to be the one that everyone universally is like "Heh... ?" same with *Planes, Trains & Automobiles.*
Oddly enough, I don't have any of these LOL! *The Color of Money* needs to be done in 4K so badly, as that BD is absolutely atrocious and a shame. Since it would be Disney, though, don't get hopes up for any DV encoding in physical media. It would still be nice to have something replace that terrible BD.
Hopefully Disney licenses it out to Criterion and does away with their bluray & 4k department.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles was mine, despite the extras.
"The Driver" had this weird brightness shift after edits on most scenes with Dolby Vision...
Forgive my ignorance but is dnr inherently bad or is a certain amount of it good?
DNR can serve a purpose if used sparingly or responsibly. But it seems many of these big studios and some boutiques overly rely on it to clean up entire movie prints and scrub their grain when they shouldn't. This can often enhance certain transfers with sharpness and contrast but remove any fine details at the same time. You'll likely lose more than minor imperfections and blemishes.
I’ll be honest I have no idea what you’re talking about when it comes to the Craft it looks outstanding picture quality sound was on point at least from my experience it worked great.
I saw the stream of giant and I thought it was good considering the source age.
Sadly i have like 3 or 4 of these in my collection haha
Thanks 4 the Info
I thought The Polar Express was poor. They used a very stair-steppy upscaling algorithm.
I was heartbroken and incredibly disappointed and returned the 4K :(
I returned Platoon after watching how bad it was
Yeah was burned on Fatal Attraction and Platoon. Luckily cancelled Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
Yeah, but those boutique labels need to improve their QC
one to add is Double Indemnity.
HEAT was a bad transfer. Miles too dark.
I know a lot of people who wont pay the extra money on 4k discs and its no wonder when studios put out poor quality crap like these 😡
You're one of the best out there.
I wonder why you video guys need to all make the same videos. I wish I was 30 yrs old again.
No PTA?
Did you watch the vid?
You have included dome poor quality discs. Regarding Pirates - get the five disc set from Australia - first one is still bad but the other films were good.
So the 4k version of all the other films are good? It's just the first one that is bad?
My disappointment was Bram Stokers Dracula Steelbook, it says double vision but I think it could have looked a whole lot better, it was very disappointing
Odd that Fatal Attraction looked egregiously DNR'd, when the PP blu ray that derived from the 4k mastered OCN is nice and grainy.
And Disney has become a physical media bulldozer... they just destroy every movie they put out. With weak audio, and questionable video mastering. Sad that they used to be a physical media dynamo back in the DVD and blu ray days.
Heat and Star Trek disappointed me this year
HEAT comes to mind for its picture quality.
Its too dark.
I don't got that one :(
Recently i was disappointed by Esther 2. I don't know if it's Paramount or not, i just know i should have bought the bluray edition.
I really wanted Giant too. Great movie
It's not that bad.
Nobody on 4k was terrible.....if you like black glitter all over the screen you'll love this 4k.
Poltergeist, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER should have been ATMOS blowing away our home theater systems.
Platoon and PTA are both terrible 4ks. However, I am even more upset with Platoon.
Is the bluray steelbook better then the 4k?
I'm glad I don't have any of those.
No you’re good, Paramount didn’t oversee that transfer.
