So mine had the same problem and after changing caps it would still blow the breaker. After some research I discovered that there is a 2 stage switch inside where part of cover presses against a little part of this switch to depress it. My cover had pulled away from it leaving the compressor in 2nd gear as a description. I was puzzled for years. Finally one day found a UA-cam on this and voila has worked perfect ever since. I had to fabricate a holder to keep the cover part of it pressed against it. Mine was a craftsman like yours but one that lays on its side.

One video that will show how the switch that changes to the start capacitor is called “Fixing The Impossible Air Compressor” this guys UA-cam channel is Sams Wood Creations
Once I saw a video showing how that clutch type activated switch works it lead me to be able to get my breaker blowing problem solved for good. My compressor was trying to start from its run capacitor rather than its start capacitor.

I was wondering if the motor was binding for some reason...turns out you needed the 40 microfarad, not the 50 microfarad capacitor Thanks for the update, the video will always be here for all the people that make the same mistake. Congratulations on a nice fix.

Hi Binh thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and time. I have model 2005 craftsman 919.168700 33 gal vertical oil less 6 peak hp. The last time i used it was 8 years ago and it has been sitting in my house storage ever since and never been used. It looks shiny brand new outside because its hardly been used.I had the same problem with this compressor tripping the fuse intermittently in the past. I am planning to used it again and recently i found out it has Devilbiss recall. I did hear you mention it in one of earlier troubleshooting fuse tripping video where you made some big and small holes on the inside motor cover for venting the motor because you could not get the replacement kit when they had the recall going on. I am still searching in the internet for the replacement recall kit which contain the external front and rear cover/shrouds and no luck so far. It seems the replacement recall kit are made of better fire retardant material but looks similar in design. Were you able to find the replacement kit? What are your experience and how did you solve the recall issue? Moreover since its been in storage inside the house sitting empty for the last 8 years, i drained it recently and 1/4 cup of light brown water came out of it and not much of rust. Do you think i should do a hydrostatic test on the compressor before i put it to use? Or is it an overkill? . How do i do a hydrostatic test on this compressor? There are only 2 outlet on the top. I have not started it until today because it seems the external shroud that cover the motor might catch fire if it gets too hot. While i was looking for the replacement recall kit, i stumbled upon my past fuse tripping experiences and i thought i might just post it in the internet and try to find some help. Here i am but 10 years late to look for solution. I will really appreciate if anybody else could share their experiences if they have the same problem finding the shroud replacement recall kit or how should i proceed to solve this problem. Or should i just go ahead and start the compressor up but not fully but half way to find out if it still works and make sure my safety valve is not stuck and its in working condition when i pull it. All I am afraid is if the tank explodes if i fill it up to its full capacity. I might still have the same fuse tripping problem lingering around in the background. But i am trying to solve one problem at a time before i tackle the fuse tripping problem. I am posting it here because i have a feeling that frequent fuse tripping has something to do with motor heating up prematurely without proper venting of the shroud but i can be wrong. Again thank you in advance for your time and patience, have a wonderful day.

The motor tripping fuses is a capacitor issue. Replace them as they are only good for 6-9 years depending on heat exposure. I have links in description to Amazon replacements. The cover is no longer found since it’s so old. I had no luck with craftsman. I just drilled holes for air flow which is what the new cover has. Mine broke so I rigged the screw with holding plate. The hydro test should be easy but you need to put new fitting on the entry hole to fill with water and then pressure washer. I have a video on my channel where I did it for my IR 60 gallon. It’s also a good idea to add a remote drain ball valve to easily drain tank periodically.

    • @rajm5244

@@TunerwithKids Thanks again for getting back to me. Did fitting the right capacitor with right capacitance fixed the fuse tripping problem until now.....its been 10 months now? Would you suggest that i make some holes on the cover that holds the run and start capacitor on the other side? Does the holes help to dissipate the heat and keep the motor cooler? Did you changed both the start and the run capacitor to begin with the problem? I am pretty sure you are right that capacitors do age out and needs to be changed and this compressor is an old one too. I have to start the compressor up and see how it fires up.And the remote drain ball valve will surely make the draining process more easier and faster. I am kinda hesitant to take apart the parts because of the crispiness of the aged plastic shrouds when you want to do the hydro test. Wish me luck and see how it goes....have a nice weekend.

It runs about 30 seconds so I removed the capacators. well its a big problem since its a craftsman build in the 90's. the capacators are under shields on top of the motor. And the correct ratings are almost impossible to find, forget the fit. everyone that sells them said oh this is close...it should work.Anyway I will find the correct ones and even it I have to use duct tape I will get replacements.

I have the 60 gal 6 hp oil free unit like yours but don’t have your problem and mine is a 1994 but I got tired of all the noise and rebuilding the pump so I separated the pump from the motor and got a 5hp oil unit from H.F. since I have the 6hp motor but (spoiler) it’s not 6hp which you probably know being an engineer.i think it’s closer to 41/3hp and would have gotten a 31/2hp pump had I realized that sooner but I think it will still work.i wanted more using as much of what I had as I could and only have to get a pulley and finish building a new platform for tank top and I should be in business.if you use yours as much as I use mine you may want to consider it

  • @customcreations-rickkramer5357

If you keep the compressor in same spot connected to same out you might just want to add a new 20amp outlet with a new 10/2 w/ ground wire to a new 20 amp breaker. That will solve your issue much better and it will be easier on your compressor.

    • @TunerwithKids

I had the wrong run cap, it threw off the phase balance and overheated. The cap needs to match existing uF rating. If your is tripping on start, you start cap is bad. Check the check valve. If it is bad the compressor will start with little or no air in the tank but can't start when there is pressure in the tank, causing the compressor to lock and overamp which trips the breaker. To check for it, drain the tank and see if it starts and runs ok with 0# in the tank. Then try to start it with 100# in the tank. If it starts and runs when the tank is empty, but won't start with pressure in the tank, then there's a good chance it is the check valve stuck open.

It wasn’t correcting the amount of air above pistons after tank would try to restart after being filled the first time 20 mins prior. The initial start was successful (tank was empty from last time I would of used & drained so no air above pistons to overload the amount of electric it would call for and kick the breaker like it was on second startup attempt) Easy to change this valve without getting into motor and cheap $20 part.
