I’m a US service member that was stationed at Sigonella in Sicily from 2016-2019. Unquestionably that greatest three years of my life. I loved being immersed in Sicilian culture.

These folk songs are not only typical of Sicilia but of much of Italy - harmonically, the phrase structure, melodic contour and form. Folk forms are affected by the many cultures that have constructed Italy over thousands of years. The Music of the south does have elements of Greek music but only in the ancient songs. The songs of Sicily and the famous Canzone Napoletane are very similar, whereas the many songs of Torino come from the Savoia period and evoke French songs. The great confusion many have regarding regional folk musics, and the question of Sicily and the other regions of Italy are confounding. Sicily is of the oldest Italian regions, provinces of the Roman Empire and of the first regions of Garibaldi’s army to ‘reunify’ in the Risorgimento culminating in 1861. Anyone who has been to Sicily, yes they see the great pre-Roman remnants of Greek, earlier native Italic tribes, and Phoenician (common to all of the south of Italy), Norman architecture primarily but we also note that Sicily and its inhabitants are quintessentially Italian in the strongest and most common of ways. For those looking for associations outside of larger norms of ‘Italian-ness’, visit the far north and northeast. Sicily is more aligned with Napoli and Roma than it is even with the southern peninsula of the country. The amateur analyses of ‘ethnicity’ in Italy are scientifically and historically so far-fetched. Italian people from the north to south are extremely similar in terms of DNA. In ancient and up to medieval times, Italy has been visited, conquered, settled by many tribes of Europeans - Gauls, Celts, Etruscans, Greeks - much later the Normans, Aragonese, Borbone, Goths, Visigoths. Rome itself was a cosmopolitan mix of peoples. There is not a singular Italian identity. Middle and Southern European countries did not develop in this manner. As for folk songs presented here these are a brief sampling of songs of the South - but many great songs of Sicily for example, resemble French, particularly Provencal songs. Sicily is a rich Italian culture with an incredible musical history with songs that evoke the ancient world, sung in a temperament that evolved before Europe itself. In recent past centuries, the operas of Bellini, popular and work songs, and love songs define the Italian spirit for so many.
