    I’ve got a Zappie linked to solar and about to install battery storage as well. The Zappie also very cleverly disconnects the EV if there is a fault on the supply to your house. Otherwise your EV could be live with what appears the rest of your house disconnected!

    I helped design and had a solar PV system installed that includes the Zappi's sibling product, the Eddi power diverter, which uses excess power generated to warm the hot water tank immersion in preference to export. It is a nice piece of kit and provides similar information to the Zappi to help you manage your energy consumption. I do hope you install a solar PV array as I was involved with microgeneration prior to retirement and I prefer solar to other technologies because of its passive nature.

    Hi Ped, I joined Octopus late last year and ordered a smart meter straight away. Nice chap came in February fitted new meters and gave me the home display to check what I was using. The gas part of the display worked straight away, it took about 3 weeks before the info was available to see on the website. The electric however was a different story. After waiting 2 weeks I emailed Octopus -nothing after 3 days. It's taken 4 phone calls, 6 emails and 10 weeks before both the website and display are now working. They still couldn't give any reason what the problem was. I'm hoping to change to Octopus go, but now I'm hoping it don't throw a spanner in the works. Just thought I would say that it may take a bit of time before the smart meters become - "Smart".
    Great videos and content as usual, very envious of that Zappi charger.

  • @rogerpearson9081
    @rogerpearson9081 2 роки тому +2

    Good choice!
    The Zappi is #1 on my list for the ability to change charging priorities so I can use all my solar surplus and have the flexibility to change the priorities depending on whether I'm home all day or need to get a charge in a certain time regardless. That is the killer feature especially when you are exporting nearly 1000kW per quarter for a measly amount.
    I am in Australia and the only concern I would have is how it would handle a hot day with the sun on it or would it need to be sheltered.
    On the lock on the fuse panel, Any industry especially mining has very strict protocols on isolations including a clamp that everyone puts their lock on so it could have 5 or 6 locks on it. Not nice when someone turns on a 1000 Hp machine with someone inside it.

    Nice Install. I was on Octopus Agile but went to Go -Faster as Agile prices have not been great lately (wholesale prices have got higher). Go faster is a bit easier to deal with as straightforward.I now get 4 hours between 8:30pm and 12:30am at 5p/kWh and that means I can also do washing etc atthat time not just charge the car ;-) Agile was getting too expensive as the daytime rate was so much higher :( Might be worth a look as with Go-Faster you can choose (to a certain extent)the times you want the cheap period to be and also how long can have 3h for 4.5p or 5 hours for 5.5p so its very good! I may go back to agile in the future as it was a great idea to try to balance the load on the grid and reflect the carbon intensity with higher prices.

    Having your own private fuel station in the garage is every bloke’s dream. You didn’t mention the output of yours? My Taycan 4S+ charges at 7,4kW. Strangely on the same equipment, the TMXP charges at 8,4kW and the TM3P at a whopping 10.4kW!! Not sure why my Taycan charges so “slow”. 0-100% takes about 13-14hrs (as charge drops in the end), but in general, one doesn’t park with an empty battery, and 7-8hrs is the usual charge time to reach 100% so I guess overnight “full tank” is OK.

    Great video showing the prep required to put what is effectively a filling station in at home. I did something similar in early 2019 before getting the e-Niro here in France. We put a dedicated feed from the consumer unit into the barn where the car is parked, buried a 15 mm cable 600 mm underground ...bit of overkill you could say but my sparky wanted to be on the safe side. I don’t have anything so sophisticated as the Zappi, not sure they sell them here and as I’m retired I don’t need to charge faster than the ‘granny’ cable. I do have solar panels though and last year my 8 panels produced enough electricity for me to drive 15,000 km which was 85% of my driving. We have an ancient electro-mechanical meter that runs backwards when the sun is shining....So until the dreaded smart metering arrives we are running the car almost for free!

      There are very few EVs capable of car to grid so it's not much of an issue presently. I'm not sure I want to do that with the most expensive component in an expensive car!)

    Solar would be a great move. Given time one imagines that the 'agile' tariff will change - it is all about when people are using electric - if everyone is charging cars at night (normally a low usage period) - will there still be a price advantage. I already have a Ground Source Heat Pump (installed in 2006) - this means I can't have an EV charger on our property (in the middle of nowhere!) as our power supply isn't big enough (We are limited to a 100 amps) - We also have a granny annex on site for my Mother in Law. Good Luck and will be interested to see developments.

    Hi. Take care to do the analysis on the agile tariff as it’s not always as cheap as you’d like.
    We’ve been on it for 10 months or so and initial savings were huge but we’ve paid more than our previous tariff for the last few months even being careful to avoid the peak hours.

      The Zappi is at the higher end of charge point prices. I have one ... and yes it's clever ... but most people will not require the facilities that it offers. All home charge points can charge at the same rate (unless you are in the 1% that have 3 phase electricity).

    Very interesting video. A couple of issues I have. I hate the fact that some energy companies insist on the customer having a “smart” meter. Whilst they are not compulsory I will resist. The reason being, I often switch providers to get cheaper tariffs. Therefore, run the risk of the meter becoming a “dumb” meter. Yes, I know it’s less likely with the newer generation of meters! Secondly, my car is in an allocated space in a residential car park and I can see issues with a cable running across the footpath between the car & the house. Sorry, petrol still wins for me!

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado 3 роки тому

      The smart meter issue has been sorted with the newer types. They really are essential if you want to take advantage of tariffs that give you cheap rates at different times of day/night. Some tariffs can have a different rate for each half hour segment of a 24 hour day! (Anyway, you've got a dumb meter already and seem to be happy with it!)

    You need the right energy meter to do these off peak charging . Electricity suppliers can’t measure your usage with without smart meters. In most cases you do not get the cheapest energy tariff when you have the supplier install a new meter. The recoup that cost in charging more per kWh.

    • @MrAdopado
      @MrAdopado 3 роки тому

      Well ... I would challenge you on the Zappi "over the air updates"! What a faff. That is the biggest negative of the Zappi owning experience IMHO. A true over the air update happens automatically without user intervention. With a Zappi you have to check that the software version on the Hub is up to date ... if not you have to press/hold/release appropriate button ... wait for download.... watch for colour change on LED. You then have to get the Hub to download the latest software for the Zappi itself by holding down the appropriate button on the Hub for x number of seconds then release ... the download can then take anything between a couple of minutes to half an hour ... watch for the change LED colours or flashing ... once that has been done you need to transfer the software from the Hub to the Zappi ... so you go to the Zappi itself and punch through about 5 different menus to get to where you tell it to download the new software from the Hub. Depending on the software version this can come in 2 downloads and takes several minutes ... after that the Zappi should restart. Job done but it's so complicated you have to go online to check the sequence each time you do it ... and they even changed the instructions. So, OTA updates are definitely more of a technical embarrassment than a selling point! Anyone who is not technically savvy would be totally lost.

    I’ve one of the original Mk1 Zappi’s along with a Harvi, Eddi, and hub. As I’ve also a Tesla Powerwall I find that the OctopusEnergy Go tariff is the best as on that I get four hours of energy at just 5 pence per kWh that’s enough even in the winter to charge my Powerwall which in turn runs the house. In my opinion the Agile tariff is best suited for those without battery back up or solar panels. You haven’t put your link to myenergi £50 discount ! Whoops 😬 should have said your OctopusEnergy £50 discount.

    I saw a video recently about EV usage in the USA, which responded to customer surveys concerning the tipping point for choosing EVs. In the video it suggested that the salient points were a guaranteed 320 miles and a price of $31000 max. The exchange rate puts that at £23800, and personally I would rather see close to 500 miles range, so I don't believe here in the UK that we are close to the tipping point yet. The price of the vehicle is going to be the biggest stumbling block, because we come back to the old argument about the variation in price depending on the country you are in.
    I was wondering if anyone else would like to suggest their own particular price/range requirements before they would consider changing?

    To say that Octopus or for that matter any energy supplier is “Green because they get all their energy from Green Sources” is a complete distortion of the reality. ALL of the energy that individual suppliers sell comes from the National Grid so it depends how that is divided at the point of delivery, Coal and Nuclear are still heavily weighted in the mix. At various times there is a bias towards ‘renewables’ but there is no 100% all year supply from these sources by any supplier.
