I love that we are caught in this strange spot in time where. Mr.Sunday and this podcast are still underground enough so that we al feel like a close nit community. However at the same time we get to watch as the popularity grows. We need a word so we know who has been here since the early days.

Open Range is a very good western, and Costner did that. 6 String Samurai is a futuristic western with a character based on Buddy Holly in it!

Alloy of Law, by Brandon Sanderson is a great Sci Fi Western, it is really well written and well preformed on Audible. It is a relatively short book, though it is the first of 4 books in a series and it is a spin off of the Mistborn trilogy, so they is still lots of mythos and content to this book.
I would say that if you are in the mood for a western setting with some nerd mixed in, this is worth checking out.

American Outlaw: A not boring Jesse James Story. Not at all historically accurate and make Jesse James out to be a kind of Robin Hood, which he wasn't really, but it was a fun movie with some good action set in my home state Missouri. Nothing ground breaking, but its fun competently executed, and worth a watch.

ps- you MUST watch 'The Proposition' lads, it really is THAT good. You're right about Nick Cave and the music but I've a feeling he might have actually written the script', or the story outline? I know he was heavily involved. The performances in that film are just towering (not to sound cliché), Ray Winstone, Guy Pearce and Danny Huston are immense, Emily Watson too. Cinematography is astounding as well, you can just feel the searing heat. Sorry, I've gone on, do watch it though, it'll stay with you, in a good way. Full of suspense and entertaining, as well as being a wonderful treatise on humanity, and lack thereof in late C19 early C20 Australia under British rule.

the reason you have trouble naming what makes a great western, is the same reason you don't appreciate John Wayne stating 'he's not a tough guy'.
Great westerns are not made by 'tough guys' who need to prove something and dark bad boy outlaw hero's. They are made by any character who personifies that spirit of independence of the West. and so a laid back cattle barren charachter who doesn't try to start fights but stands up for himself or the right thing when trouble is ready to role his way can be such a person without being a tough guy.
McClintock, Sons of Kaiti Elder, The War Wagon, and The Cowboys are some of my favorite John Wayne Westerns that capture that independent spirit I'm talking about. Give them all a second look please.

You Aussie types never answer my questions (flippin' colonials!) but wasn't there a pretty good revenge one with Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan? It had a few daft bits where they tried to add some lofty themes, but in the main it was a real down n' dirty piece a la 'The Proposition' (which I love). Now then, go and throw another shrimp up your er' barbe hole? Best wishes, from Blighty. Always a Brilliant podcast, you always make me laugh and lift my spirits, whilst offering insightful and intelligent opinions (intelligent y'know for Aussies I mean. ;)
