REVIEW OF THE HONDA HRU 216

- Gday ole mate,
The truth comes out!
This video is bound to ruffle some feathers a stir up few barnies in the comments I'm sure. I am not saying this is a poor mower, I am saying this mow may not fit the domestic market. Nor should it as it was manufactured for the commercial market.
However I stand by my views in this vid.

Hey mate good video. The reason the blade break has a button and a lever is so that if you press the drive clutch forward without the button on the blade break pushed in, the mower will drive forward without spinning the blades (like if you needed to cross a gravel driveway or something). The button can get bit finicky though and sometimes pops out when I'm mowing which is frustrating. Also you can tune them up to go faster after you run it in for a few hours, but I would recommend taking it to the dealer to do that to get the exact revs (i think it's 3600rpm). You're right that it is overkill for the domestic user.
G'day Brad. Cheers mate. Yeah. This was an out of the box review. I'm going to up the revs in the next few weeks then give it a second review. But me thinks that all is going to change is work capacity and walking speed. Still too much mower for me here. 👍
Dealers normally adjust the max RPM to what is “normal” on earlier Hondas. Otherwise they will not perform well. Not sure why Honda do this.
I'd assume so. Not sure why this one was not adjusted
Hey mate, great video. I have one, and totally agree with everything you said. Also have a top of the range toro with similar issues. I would recommend buying a $500 masport, every five years. Those cut just as good as anything and get through the thicker buffalo kikuyu lawns just as good as the top of the range toros and hondas. They are much lightef, and far more easier to use. What i would really live to see is how the new 18 volt rechargeable makita, toro, and honda mowers go in the thick stuff after 20 or 30 minute. If they had the power, with the huge weight reduction, they would be awesome.
Yeah man. I'm gunna look at bush ranger or masport for me next one. But for now the ole massy is hanging in there👍
Good Review young man, you missed when the bag get's full especially with a bit of wet material it starts lifting up the front of the mower and quality of cut goes down quickly. I love mine, it took me a month but I can't go back, it is just so solid and cuts so beautifully. I really wish it would cut lower, the speed of mine mowing in gear 2 is more than enough for me but I have a few years on you young Dan and you are a race car compared to me being a tank.
I will give you $200 for it, $100 for each of your 2 out of 5 stars you gave it, if you can drop into Bordertown on your way to Naracoorte next.
Cheers mate. 🤣🤣🤣 gunna see how it handles the tif first. Then might hang onto it, but likely flog it off. $200 delivered 😮 $205 minimum 🤣
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464:)
The safety features really gave me the willys 🤣🤣 cracked me lol.
Thanks for review I was concerned about the weight as I have a steeper block so I'll buy the hrn Instead
Now that I have given the Honda a tune up ots performing a bit better but the weight has not changed. Defs look into the HRN 👍
Prefer the Honda HRU196 for residential stuff, cheaper, same engine but a little physically smaller, has a blade brake, full size plastic catcher and no need for self propelled when you got a decent pair of Scully and Mulders to push it with.
Scully and Mulders. Haven't herd that in years 🤣. Defs man. I don't think this is the right Tool for the job....
Yep just switched my 216 over for a 196 with poly catcher after gearbox failure.
196 is lighter, cuts nicer and easy to push
I love mine, dad bought it 16 years ago and still starts first pull
G'day Vic. I'm glad mate 👍. They definitely have the reliability mate, no doubt. She's not a bad unit. The new model doesn't quite suit me here though 😪.
Awesome review brother 👍🏽 Well nice yard too bruz!
🤣🤣🤣 cheers mate
Bloody heavy buggers these , my 196 is over 20 years old and its a tank. Noisy and heavy my only complaint , also have Masport president 4000 with commercial briggs and stratton 850 engine , its much quieter , lighter and easier to use. i don't think self propulsion is necessary to be honest , just more weight and complication. Push mower does the job and good light exercise.
Yeah. Was happy to see that back of this one
Got to say, that mower barley clogs. I use it in my business working a day a week. And in over a year I have clogged it 4 times. Best performing mower in wet conditions I have ever used 👍 you will not be disappointed.
G'day mate. Thanks for that Yeah. This was an out the box review. And all it did for me was choke up when getting into the crowns. I am going to up the revs in the next few months and give it another go. Thanks for the input 👍
Well your never getting a free honda mower to review for honda 🤣 1700 is a hell of a lot of money I will stick with my Morrison with the mulching attachment 🤙
LOL. They can send me a domestic model if they prefer. 🤣
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 I would take any mower for free give then a 10/10 it's free 🤣🤣
@@calebevans8437 def would not turn down a freebe 🤑
Our company switched to using these about 18 months ago...So we have had about 7 of them all bought brand new
Almost all of them have had gearbox failure within 12 months....Not very good for a $1,600 mower...
Yeah they get used daily commercial use, they get used hard
The mechanics at the mower shop are saying, yeah 12 months for a gearbox commercial use, that's about normal. If you gotta pay $500 every 12 months for a new box, that makes this a shit machine!
The new model HRU196 is way better. Its much lighter and gives a better quality cut. Its easy to push and no gearboxes to blow up
Peace :)
Yep. No doubt. I would not be forking OT 1700 for one that's fur sure. Would defs look at a 196 tho
Are you using the HRU196 in a commercial setting? I'm stumped on what mower to buy for my business
@@Sillybugga Hey mate. I been using the newer model HRU-196 with poly catcher daily commercial use for over a year now.
Its really good. It's light and easy to push but if you're up for it, because a lot of blokes are too lazy to push a power these days
I don't use the 216 anymore, gearboxes are way too unreliable too expensive to fix, and the mower is way too heavy for Sydney yards carry up/down stairs etc
@@mowtoegee7049 That's awesome. Thanks mate! Yeah, I don't want expensive fixes either and would like something light enough that can be thrown in the back of my tray without needing a ramp ideally. I also want a full chute for mulching.
Do you know anything about HRU19? They seem to have the same specs as HRU196 from what I can tell but have the new GV170 motor (I don't know if that makes it better?) and are also lighter I think. I know they're not marked as commercial but I read somewhere people running them commercially.
@@Sillybugga Hey mate, I haven't used that particular machine so I couldn't say but yeah the full chute on the 196 (poly catcher models) is also another great feature as they don't clog as easily as the 1/2 chute mowers with wet and thick lawns. best of luck
Thanks for the review! I’ve seen a couple on fb marketplace for around the 700-800 mark and have been tempted. But if it ripped up your kikuyu, it’ll be doing burnouts on my fescue.
🤣🤣🤣 skids for the kids. No dramas mate. Fescue, nice. I do love a nice tall fescue, it can be very architectural.
Self propel systems take up too much space, the Hondas without it perform so much better. Anyway, clearly the wrong mower for you, flog it off and get a victa 460 utility, 8mm HOC 😁
It’s a shame Briggs & Stratton stopped making engines with auxiliary PTO to drive the self propel. I just acquired a 1987 Hayter, rotary mower with a rear roller. The PTO is above the deck, gear reduction is internal to the engine so the roller drive takes up minimal space - the grass chute is almost full width. It’s pretty basic for self propel, single speed only, but it works and doesn’t restrict the mower like most new self propels which lose half the grass chute.
Cheers Phil. Yeah I'm keeping my eye out for a 460. Do you know anyone in Radelaide that has one their willing to part with
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 wait your turn, I’m in first 😂
@@philrichmond5919 🤣
Them mowers have a world of hurt to contractors with the transmission and then you have to tune them up rpm wise.
Half cute is a killer.
Go checkout masport or bushranger.
190cc 19" deck min.
My masport non s/p made mince meat of my Kikuyu at reno time.
Drop and keep on moving forward.
Full cute.
G'day Michael. Thanks for the heads up mate. I'll definitely check em out👍
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 my hru216 has over 600 hours on the original gearbox
@@aussielawns1845 hey mate. Yeah, nor all transmissions will be defective. I bet there a a heap of HRUs running around out there that are great machines 👍. Think it's a case of right Tool for the job.
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 some people got the lemon boxes! I'm lucky bought mine October last year and still going. Already replaced wheels n shit but gearbox still goin strong
Bro awesone video loved it so much just subscribed. I was about to drop the $1700 on this puppy until I saw your review. Thanks for the honest review.
No dramas mate 👍. It's a good mower but just too much mower for my place. I did a vid on how to get a few more revs out of them as well.
What a bloody good review ay 👍
G'day Chris. Glad ya liked it man
Good honest review Dan. Yes there are better valued mowers on the market. I had a neighbour buy a Honda because its the best he soon sold it for a lighter more practical mower for domestic duties. Happy Easter enjoy the long weekend. 👍🐰
Cheers mate Happy Easter 👍.
Bring back the rover procuts..
I got one I use every day and I can't stand the pos
Could be a more suitable machine for this area 👍
Thanks,Honda should see you review.Chears .Great review.
No dramas mate 👍
It ain't for residents really but commercial use I worked for Andrews for years and I've used many mowers push and self propelled .. it only broke once and that's because the self propelled pins do snap off from wear and tear but it's simple to fix.. if u cant fix that and take it to honda.. I don't know what to say.. because it's not hard...
100% agree man. Not for residential use 👍. There are some reliability issues as well. In this instance I rated it low for my yard
What ya mean bro? Reliability?? What'd you experience? It is bs if you don't know how to fix the self propelled I can see how that would mess dudes up u gotta take it to a shop then.. it's good to carry spares cause they usually only break at those hook pins they use on the self propelled at the spring.. like the control lever. It just sucks if u do a lawn that's like on a slope ... a 90 degree yard like it's bs with a push mower... and if the self propelled breaks and u can't fix it on spot and u gotta push anyway.. I know.. i used that same mower for years at andrews mowing
The self propelled gearing ayy makes it feel like ya slogging around a army tank
All that extra steel and Wright
Weight
The masport 470 is the best mower for the home owner
Can't say I've ever had the pleasure. But I love my massy.
Bought mine on facebook market place used 8 years ago along with a honda straight shaft whippie for $200 , they are 10 years old now
The mower has done plenty of work with sfa maintenance only just put some new blades on it recently , even mows down to 10mm
Wife managed to start it and mow without any instruction or ever using a mower before
Its nice and light weight easy to handle
Picked up a honda self propelled the other day to try out and geez what a heavy tank , gonna stick to the 470
Great review. I agree, not worth the money for the residential owner. I also noticed the snorkel isn’t standard anymore on them. I’ve got a ‘07 Honda HRU 19D Buffalo Buck with snorkel kit and it’s a great machine. Not self propelled and no safety features, but a workhorse of a machine. Also, no restrictions to the plastic bagger.
Cheers mate👍. I'll have to have a look at it. What's the min HOC?
Hello Jon, I hope you are doing well. please advise how to find part number for the snorkel. I need to buy one badly, my local dealer here in Russia could not find one at Honda parts catalogs. Maybe you can help me with contacts of your local Honda dealer who can understand the snorkel kit purpose. Best regards, Yuri
Do you guys realise that this mower is more a commercial thing??? Why would u buy this residential...
If u don't own a lawn mowing buisness it ain't worth it
@@aussieranger2168 because it’s a beast in front of the neighbours
Good review mate, so you're moving the HRU216 on then?
Yeah. Might see how it handles the tif. If that's no dice then Def move it on. That angle did not show how much it tore up me yard aye.
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 ahh bugger mate, Might be time for a new masport next? LOL
@@theaussielawn i have the HRU196 love it...only downside is the 15mm HOC
@@Clifford124 You know you can sneak it past the lowest "official" height setting and it goes a tiny bit lower but totally agree mate I wished it went a little lower myself lucky I have the little Victa Pro460 for my hardcore scalping
If it ever goes missing don't look for it at my place😉
there used to be hrj(or k)216 with same engine ,3 speed gearbox but without blade clutch and its much lighter weight and has bigger shoot port for clipping and also better mulch ability than this hru, contractors love it but somehow honda stop making it anymore.
Is that right? I'm not big on the Honda models 👍
i thought u were gregs gardening for a sec
G'day Marty. Don't know ole mate Greg, sorry. Hope he's more fortunate in the looks dept. than me 🤣🤣🤣
@@thegreenandgoldlife1464 greg the garder has a channel on youtube
Yo Ere he is
Ere he is. 🤙
Question did it sell? 😂👍
Solid review bruh. No one needs to be burning daylight over a design issue. Aussie lawns are the mecca of mowing testament for these mower companies. the blade clutch engage is like a automatic over a manual transmission from the jumpstart. A total failure for tough lawns. As much as honda is a god of motors they should pour their imagination into their motor not the peripherals, sadly im taking mine back for a refund. i will stay with their cars and bikes they quite have a long way to come in the aussie lawn business. As a aussie i think honda trying to design a beer holder would be the best way to describe it.
Cheers man. It seems that people either love em or hate em. Defs not the right Tool for the job for me anyway.
Hey buddy was going to buy one of these for domestic use ,instead bought a thirty year old Hru 194 gave it a service starts first pull payed fifty bucks revs out hard solid machine 1:38 1:42
Sweet man, glad it works for ya 👌
500!? A steal. Moving to somewhere with a big lawn with a lot of slope, so has to be self propelled. This was pretty high on my list, but yeah, not really.
Yeah. About 250 too much. Not sure it will be wit me much longer
I have inherited one of these and trying to figure something out. Does it "drive" both rear wheels or just the right?
seem to not have any power on the left so it works but it's a pain to push.
Sorry mate, can't tell ya coz I sold it last year
Mate your lawn looks like one of those lawns in a fantasy magazine. Nice work. Really really looks good.
Thanks John. Yeah, don't mind fussing over it
Man thank you so much your video are PERFECT Cheers from Australia.
So great to have some Aussies watching 👀 👍
What's The difference between this and the HRN216?
Couldn't tell ya mate soz. I think the HRN model is the domestic model
What does the "H" stand for in HRU216?
Would not have the foggiest mate. Honda? Horrible?
What model number would this be in the US?
Oof, sorry mate. Can't help in this instance.
Tune up the revs
G'day mate. Yeah, I've bumped em up since this vid 👍. Still not overly impressed with the performance 😒
U so connie 🤣👌🏾
Cheers ole mate, I try 🤣🤣🤣
Hi mate, Happy Easter, I have this mower for my business and to be honest I love it, I found at the start the blade brake took a bit to get use to, but after a few months its all good, I used to run toro mowers but disliked the height adjustment on each of the four wheels, great with the single adjustment on the Honda, In regards to the "bogging down" when you engage the the blades, I found that if you lean it back so front wheels are off the ground it doesn't seem to struggle to engage. It sure is a heavy unit, but its built to last.
G'day Paul. Happy Easter to you and yours mate. Yeah, I'm glad that some one loves these mowers, coz they a a genuine quality machine... I'll definitely give the leaning back a go. Thanks for the heads up. Yeah toro wit the single wheel adjustment is engineering madness
