    Tip for cold clay that is getting a bit dry: You can soften it by kneading in liquid hand soap or shampoo in balls of clay. Add one drop at a time until the clay is soft to work with.

    Thank you for the awesome tips, this video is great! Approximately how long of a window does one have, working with cold porcelain, before it starts to harden? Or once that happens, are we able to just revive it with a bit of water or something? I like to take my time with projects, so I'm wondering if air dry may not be right for me. I've seen other tutorials where storage involves putting a bit of water or vaseline on the plastic wrap prior to covering; also, putting cold porcelain in the fridge. Do you recommend these steps or are they necessary? Thanks!

    Hi, I dont know if you are still replying to comments on your channel, but if you are, here's my query/comment! Loved the video and especially appreciated the lack of generic, canned music! My query is can you use baby oil on your hands to prevent CP sticking to them? I have a really rare but quite severe dermatitis between my fingers and on my palms that is triggered by all sorts (soil and plant sap, hand lotions, moisturisers, latex and non-latex gloves, heat - the list is endless!) but Baby Oil seems to be ok!

    I've been reading that uncooked porcelain clay actually shrinks less than cooked. What do you use to color your clays, just acrylics? Can you do a tutorial for your uncooked version? I tried both and I think I prefer the cooked, but if you add too much paint it gets really soft. How do I remedy this?

    • @ClayBum
      @ClayBum 5 років тому +2

      yes i use acrylics. someone recommend oil ink. I actually dont like the uncooked version its not that durable as the cooked one when dried. heres what she said. "you can also use oil ink to color cold porcelain... in my opinion is the best one because it colors very well with a small amount of ink, and since its not a water based ink it will not change the consistency of your clay. Also depending on the oil ink you are using there is no need to add white to prevent the translucent effect. I'm brazilian and here the cold porcelain (we call it "biscuit" here) is a very developed technique and people make a living from it."

      Hello there. Do you make your own cold porcelain too? You can watch my tutorial on how i make mine. I tried cooking it on the non-stick pan and its better! You can try this recipes. 1 cup white glue im using Shelwood brand but any white glue will do, 1 cup cornstarch, 2 table spoon of oil. 2 table spoon of vinegar/lemon juice. After cooking it. Knead it with non sticky lotion or nivea. Cook it just right because if you overcooked it too much the clay will eventually crack while drying.so just a bit overcook will do so its not so soft and sticky to mold.. My english sucks but i hope you understand. You can see my tutorial on my other videos. I have tricks and tips too using cold porcelain. Thank you

    • @ClayBum
      @ClayBum 6 років тому

      hello.. uhm..no. it didnt resist water. any air dry clay is not waterproof.. oh except Modena resin clay its air dry clay and waterproof.. for accessories i recommend using polymer clay than cold porcelain.. If you really want to use cold porcelain to make it kind of waterproof. you need to glaze it with UV resin. I tried soaking it on water for hours. but I only put 1 layer of that glaze. I missed some parts of the clay it soften. I think you need to glaze thoroughly and make it 2 layers.

      It is like a hole? It means while drying it the back is not drying as fast as the front.
      You should dry the back too. You can flip one time so the back can dry too. I suggest buying silk screen so the air can circulate at the bottom too. But when you need a ball. You should use a stack tissue like I told in the video so it will not deform

    I've made different batches of cold porcelain I cooked it I've made uncooked. But every time I work with it it's always sticky. I put lotion on my hands and it's fine as I'm kneading it for maybe 1 or 2 minutes. If I keep doing lotion on my hands when I'm working with it it will all of a sudden consistency changes where it's cracking as I'm just trying to work with it.
    When I made it I always make sure it has the teardrop shaped when I pull it apart. Now even if I can grab it how do you put lotion on my hands and try to just shape a ball, flatten it out to use it on top of a fairy house. IT'S like it's MELTING. LOL . And it will keep melting, and not hold shape at all!
    I would love it if mine got to your consistency.
    What can I do, what am I doing wrong?
    I'm going to see if you've got a recipe on your Channel. But I've tried so many different wines. Anyway, any help would be so appreciated! How can I get mine to your consistency!

      I overcook my clay just a little bit. Can I ask what glue are you using? and lotion? Brand of glue and lotion are sometimes have too many water ingredients and that can make your clay more stickier and have tendency to crack.
      I always knead my clay in front of a fan for many minutes before I mold it, until its not too soft to sculpt to prevent it from sagging while drying

    Since you make both 'cooked' and 'uncooked' cold porcelain could you make a comparisons video to explain what the differences are between them in the final product? Also curious how you store your clay so it lasts so long, five months sounds like a long time considering I've read it can go bad within a couple weeks. Thanks.

    • @ClayBum
      @ClayBum 7 років тому +4

      Hi! I can't make a video for now but I will tell you.. Both cooked and uncooked are good to make there are disadvantages in both sides. My cooked CP last that long because I've added vinegar and it doesn't have paint yet. I'm storing it in a plastic wrap then place it inside an air tight bag. You should use it immediately after you paint it up to 3- 5days.. Cooked CP doesnt dry faster than uncooked CP. when you make super small parts or detailed designs its better to use Cooked CP and Uncooked CP to bigger projects. I do recommend to make Cooked version because it last longer even when u dont use it yet after you cook it just add vinegar. Uncooked version is easy to make but you should take time to condition it before using because its too soft its de molding itself when drying. Finish product in Cooked and Uncooked are the same :) both hard as rock.

      Mine is actually a bit sticky too but my solution to that is to slightly overcook my clay (dont over do it)
      Also before I work with it. I knead in front of a fan with Vaseline lotion or Nivea cream, it will lose its stickiness and sagginess. 👌 sometimes the glue you're using can affect the clay too also with the lotion/cream you're using. I recommend Vaseline lotion (yellow/green one) or Nivea cream. I'm not sure about other brands coz I use some lotions that did make my clay stickier.

      What is heat mold fabric? You mean the one where you can dry the clay pieces? If yes you can also dry them on silk screen if not round or stacked tissues.

What you can do is spread it on a plastic surface where it is easy to get off and just leave it for an half an hour then knead it again with nivea cream or you could knead it for 30mins in front of a fan. If you want you could also put in the microwave for 30 secs. You could also add a bit of cornstarch.

    Mam why is my clay is shrinking after making dolls , they look like wrinkles , why does this happen and how to overcome this problem

    • @ClayBum
      @ClayBum 3 роки тому

      Cold porcelain really shrinks for about 15-20%. Tho the cracks/wrinkles is not normal. They are reasons why that happens. First the clay you made, if it is homemade clay maybe you overcooked it. 2nd, how you condition and mold it.
      you need to knead the clay until it;s smooth and ready to use. you will know if its ready to use if the clay is not too soft and not too dry. then make a smooth ball on your palm, apply pressure on it. then its ready to mold and sculpt.
      3rd if you mold/sculpt too long, the clay is getting dried that's why it's forming cracks it is starting to dry.
      4th, sometimes it depends on the ingredients of clay that you use or it's brand.

      you could mix white, a little brown depends on how light/dark you want the skin then you can add a bit of orange.. just be careful putting a lot of brown since the color will get darker when dried
