- I take a close look at how much power the Duxtop Induction Cooktop uses. Its said to have a variable watt output instead of the hard set options of 3 levels or watts. It was recommended by @wirecutter so I grabbed one up. Used their link too for the suggestion. I tried it on a bigger power station and wanted to know if you can use it on smaller power stations later in the video. We even tried out power boost or power lift to see if that would help.

My whole Van life experience starts with a hot cup of coffee or tea. Having a warm beverage in the woods is my idea of heaven. That’s why I watch these videos:)
Thats awesome, gotta love having "at home" conveniences out in the woods. Thats not my cup of tea but im sure its still pretty dope.
Been using one of these induction cooktops for over 14 years at home. Removed the typical stovetop with oven, and never turned back. So convenient, saves space, saves money, and safer if kids are around.
Great point about the kid safety, shoot all those points are good.
This is it! Our friends need these to help feed the children and save power!
You're welcome Ive! Im glad you feel better, we have eucalyptus and lavender going on right now, glad it helped :D
was waiting for this. Great. Good practical look @Ive. You covered this demo very well.
Thanks Sir! Appreciate it.
Hi Ive, an induction cooktop does not use resistance to heat with. There is no heating element in an induction cooktop. It actually uses magnetism to heat. There is a term called hysteresis, which determines how much heat can be caused with magnetism. I haven't used that term since I was in college, and I been out of college for over 50 years, so not sure how to explain it, but if you have ever felt of a small transformer and saw how hot it was, Then you have seen magnetism create heat. The worse a transformer is wound, the more heat it creates with magnetism and hysteresis is a term for the heat it creates from induction. Induction is when you create magnetism by passing a current through a wire that is wrapped around an iron core. Not a great explanation, but I hope it helps.
A wealth of information Sir!
A induction cooker basically works like a transformer. The cooker acts as the primary winding, and the pan acts as the secondary winding, but the pan is a shorted turn, so the current flows freely through the pan which gets converted to heat. The technical term is called “eddy currents” which is the currents that flow through pan to create the heat.
Iron inducts magnetism
Copper conducts magnetism.
Welcome to the millennial days of Noah's new moon SE to NW tidal wave deluges every 40 years when mercury and Venus are in a major conjunction due to earth's increasing magnetic north tilt.
We're looking for a small cooktop so your video is helpful since the Duxtop is highly recommended for the size you're using. Thanks for the video.
What application are you looking to use it on??
I found this video useful for another style that has set watts vs this fluctuating one that I have. I'd prefer that set up honestly.
I think this is it

Very interesting and informative video now makes me want to tryout my own induction cooktop
Man you haven't commented on a video is probably over a year. Haha
Excellent video for us RVers.
Glad you liked it Bill!! Check out Katys Camp Kitchens video in her induction cooktop. It was good.
Hey Ive. Thanks for doing this video. I have a butane cooktop, but I've always wanted an induction cooktop. I will look into this brand to use with my Ecoflow Delta Pro. 'Preciate cha!
Check out the Wirecutter list too. Might find something there too.
Good video, doing some research on DC appliances and ran across you again.
Nice! I think I like the nuwave one more. I don't have it but it has set power outputs vs fluctuating.

Great video! Thanks for sharing this.
Youre welcome, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for the video, I've also done some extensive testing with induction. It is very hard to find an induction cook top that varies the watts as you dial it in. There used to be some available at reasonable cost however, they are expensive to make with the delicate circuitry required. The cheapest way to make them now is to have the cycling power level at about 400 or 500 watts when a low heat is required to simmer, for example. When you get up to the mid point, level 5, it will be more stable at 1000w, after that, level 6, 7 etc the watts increase and are steady. There are models that top chefs and bakers use that maintain a very constand dialed in temperature, but they are over $1,000 ..... Also, I found that using cast iron is not recommended because 1. it gets so hot, it causes a over heading error on the cooker and 2. the lower grade cast iron can crack becasue it gets heated so fast, it's cooking the metal; that's induction. I love ours in the caravan (RV) on the inverter, soo good for off grid living. Keep up the good work, keep the videos coming.
That was an interesting read, thanks for sharing!!
Great video my brother. We all gotta eat. You are still my favorite solar go to by a long shot. Thanks
He's my favorite solar go to as well!
Man I appreciate that. I'm just trying to make content that I would love to see but didn't. I don't always succeed but that's the goal.
Thanks Radiant Jasmin!! I appreciate that.
Thank you for making this video for the any old Jo …
Youre welcome, its important to me to speak plainly in these videos. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope theres some other content that helps you out.
please-Don't forget to come back with the Low wattage heater test - I have a 40w cutie from W.... thanks again this was interesting!!!!
I'm enjoying all the comments!! I'm thinking of a thumbnail lately. :)
I recall you mentioning this "joint" 😅 FINALLY and Thank you
I'm so slow. Ha
Thanks, I have the same induction oven. This type of video is great. :-)
Oh nice! What made you grab it. It ain't cheap. Haha
I did this for awhile. Induction is extremely hard on lithium power stations. This is how I got started in the solar game. I had a crappy Milin Power Station and a 500watt Induction cooktop from South Korean. 500 watts is not a lot of wattage to cook and basically just enough to get liquid to boil. To get liquid to start to show repetitive bubbles took 25-30 minutes. As you can see it took half the battery to do anything involving liquid and took the entire battery to fry and the food most of the time never got thoroughly cooked. Coupled with the Milin having crappy ports and the infamous 12-volt-port-having-the-10-second-power-off-if-no-power-draw-is-detected feature the induction/power station combo was a non-doer for me.
This is a good read. Very interesting. I'm going to have to test.... In summer.
But I certainly understand doing this on the milin.
Did you find a solution that worked? Really interesting stuff
@NateGPT I got rid of the Milin soon after this post. The solution was to buy a quality power station. I bought a BougeRV 1100 power station. I've had it a few years now and am pretty satisfied with it. I do not use it nearly enough so it's just sitting collecting dust. I'm not as interested in solar as I once was.
You should make an AskIve Cooking Channel, lol. But on a Serious Note, I've had my eye on this thing for a minute now.
Haha. AskIve (cant) cook channel.
Check out the Wirecutter article. Should be easy to find.
Thank you so much for this!
This was cool to see an induction cooktop in action, I haven't used one before. I'm guessing with all the fancy touchscreen and button controls it needs full voltage to function. I have yet to find a useful device to run on 'Xboost' or "power lift' modes. These are a gimmick IMO (that's why I don't talk about it much in my reviews).
On the screen of the 'duran duran' it shows 110v output, thats probably why you were seeing less wattage than advertised. If the power station put out the full 120v, it would have hit rated power.
Interesting @ the 110. Great catch. Hmmm. I'm probably gonna do a short with it on the wall outlet or a 120 power station.
Looks cool 😎
Thats cool you got the induction heater. Planning to make meals off mine every day as long as i have enough solar coming in. Great way to utalise the power imo.
I searched for how much a .... What do you guys call stoves? :)
And they may use about double but I'm not sure since they account for burners and the oven.
I guess I'm hoping it uses less energy than a single stove burner but who knows. Probably not. Heat is heat
@@AskIveSolar Do you mean "hob"? That's what I call them induction hobs or induction cookers just whatever. We actually got a power outage today and my Mrs wasn't sure how to use it cos the pan wasn't working. Because of this video I was like get the fridge magnet and check them. If it sticks they work :D. And sure enough it worked. Btw you can cook soup on 200-400w and it goes so fast.
Yeah that's it, hob! And that's pretty sweet @ the soup. Anything is better than cold food for sure. 2 to 400 watts is pretty cool draw to have warm food in a pinch!!
Wow...that's cool!!
I don't use it much but I'm glad to have it!!
@AskIve Solar Didn't miss this one! 👍🏽 Saw the pop up! Mmmm ... I have to test mine (techwood); I haven't, even, used it. yet. I want to see if I get similar results ... especially, regarding the types of pots/pans, that can only be used on it (e.g. them needing to be magnetized, etc.). Interesting!
I need to see if I can actually get 100 watts over an amount of time to see if that's true.
I have 3 different brands of Induction ovens, I love them, I first learned about the induction oven from Roble Ali, I was like, "I must have one of these portable money disks! LOL" and to be able to take the induction anywhere with a solar generator is a game changer....great video Ive!
I have a NuWave that has 3 wattage choices 600w,900w and 1300w I got it specifically for this feature so I would not stress the inverter in my truck
Yeah Katys camp kitchen hipped me to that style. I actually prefer that style with power stations instead of what I have. Live and you learn right. Ha
Thank you , looks like a good alternative to using propane burner s
Check out this one as it has set watt settings.
amzn.to/3zjVwi1
You could also consider the little 250 watt George Foreman grill or mini grills for direct cooking
Interesting! Never heard of smaller ones. May need to look into it.
What wattage settings does it come with? Curious if my old gz yeti 400 would be able to drive this in a power cut on lowest. I noticed 0.5 setting was pulsing 400w?
I don't know what it does on the lowest setting. My impression (if I recall) is that it does an on off cycle to keep the watt hours low not the instantaneous watt usage low.
Interesting
Is there a benefit to using les power and taking longer to boil rather than using more power and taking less time to boil?
Great question. I don't have a test based answer but I would think no because you can't cheat heat. Lol
Now if you have solar coming in then maybe it could make sense to use less since you're replenishing.
Great question though. I'd have to think about that.
Had same happened on heater too. But then mine only charges back up when it wants too now it not wanting too so buying another power box since this will only work when it wants for rechargeable. EB3A
That's so interesting. One day mine was at 80 percent and wouldn't go higher. I just tossed the Energizer on it and it started to charge again. I was more concerned about it being full and missing out on solar than it being a weirdo. Haha.
We use My mini frying pan (300w), a grain cooker (200w) and wafflemakers (500w). All 3 heat efficiency with low energy draws.
Nice! Thanks for sharing that.
Great video, but you didn't test the max rated output. The manual says level 10 is 2 kW and I just saw it on certain popular marketplace where they claim it is 2 kW unit as well. In the video your station reports only 1250 W load at level 10. You said inverter was strong enough and battery seems to be decent. What was causing it? Does pan size matter?
I think pan size does matter, Ill keep that in mind for future tests.
I got a single induction hob from Deawoo in the mean time. It is more streamlined in my opinion and it shows normal wattage on the display, 500 watts for instance, instead of the confusing power levels. It seems the real lowest power is 1000 watts and it will cycle on/off when less is set. What is strange is that my bluetti ac200max reports 100 watts of load when the device is plugged into an active inverter. I need to read manual to see if they say anything about it. It isn't a big deal, because I unplug it when I am done with cooking and disable inverter to save power, I am flooded with solar anyway, but it is a strange load. Fan is off and my 14" floor fan takes only 40-50 watts.
There are similar portable burners that use infrared instead of induction (infrared does not require special cookware). Would like to see a similar test with an infrared burner.
Ooooohhhh. Interesting. Off to Amazon
Yeah, they put out some heat so not as safe as induction but cheaper at the time I bought one for my kid (who has never used it).
@@AskIveSolar You could check out some of the Dash brand small appliances and things like electric skillets, electric teapots, the smaller rice and soup cookers, etc. Not everyone feeds a family, so if you only need to make a small amount of food at a time it's possible some of them will be more efficient than firing up a hot plate of some kind.
Infrared elements will never be as efficient as induction.
@@evil17 Maybe not, but I don't need new cookware to use infrared.
Amazing unboxing, full support new friend here ❤
Thanks boss. Not sure if you're a real person or s bot
Weldone sir...
Please what's the capacity of your solar generator?
Thanks!
Roughly 2000wh and thanks!
cool but I will use my jetboil in case of emergency (cook water in a minute) and it also fits better in my bag pack 🙂
What fuel does it use. I'll look it up in a sec
@@AskIveSolar propane/isobutane
I may have seen one on the outdoor gear reviews. It sounds familiar.
@@AskIveSolar yes, used for outdoor but great as an emergency backup. You can get simpler one's all for $20-$30 and they work brilliantly on any pot and the fuel is cheap
Interesting. The chart on the Amazon page shows temp to watts and the reality is that it is basically useless for cooking anything by means of a power station / battery unless people have a huge system because the energy used takes too long. For the price of the unit it's better to just invest in a little propane stove and some propane. That will quickly cook / heat up food in no time thus saving your electric reserves for other needables and use minimal propane. Plus most people will already have the propane to run their duel fuel generators so they can charge up power stations / battery systems when there isn't any Sun.
I guess I always look at these things as....if you have the power....why not.
600 watts on a sunny day to make something warm like beans or soup seems like an option if propane is limited.
My dextop is not giving me any heat. It's only giving me the error code POE. Any solution?
Magnetic pot? I can't recall if I've seen that error
That company could of used another name for their power station, anytime I hear Duran Duran, I think of the Rock Group, lol
It's called the DuranEner hahaha. I nickname stuff all the time.
It comes in handy when your hungry like the wolf! 🐺
😂😆😂
Facts!!! Good one!
The EcoFlow Delta2 will easily power almost anything in your house. The Delta 2 is small and lightweight, even though the inverter is very powerful, the battery capacity is modest, but this is exactly what I needed for portability and power.
I really have to try and see what the lower settings can do. Imagine having one of those crazy 400 watt folding panels from EF and having this out in the open during a park day or whatever.
👌 👏 👍
Nice my brother. Now you can cook chicken on this instead of the microwave 🤣
😂 I was like this ain't nobody but stacks. Hahaha
@@AskIveSolar lol you got that right lol. When you going live?
Jackery 500
Instant pot mini
Boils fast on sauté setting
Coffee in da woods
I dont know much about instant pots but an instant pot mini sounds really interesting. How much power does it use?
@@AskIveSolar Well, the more water u use, the longer it takes to boil. My initial reason for getting was for car camping on a rainy day and wanting that first cup of coffee. The wattage is minimal. wait and i will do it now... be back in a minute.
@@AskIveSolar one cup of room temp water took 5 minutes to boil. and took 10 watts on my jackery 500.
I have a very similar model cooktop
I've found wattages below 600W, it PWM pulses 600 watts
Above 600 watts, it scales smoothly
My system is piece built, with a 2500W inverter, 750w solar collection, and 300ah of lithium.
Cranking that burner at max, it makes the best gas burners look like cr@$.
it'll boil a gallon of water in mere minutes
Thats good insight, had I knew then what I know now, I would have gotten one with set wattage output to give me more control.
Pressure cooker combined with induction!
I don't much about pressure cookers but I'm sure you're onto something!! Ha
Your power box is what 600W or higher
What the eb3a? You're throwing me off with that phrase.
If you're talking about the smaller power station it has a 600 watt inverter.
En español
No hablo Espanol
This Duxtop cooktop is on Amazon for $116 now. Kinda pricey & it says 1800 watts...hmm..pass for now
Yeah it's not cheap, for sure!
you do realize that to your solar power inverter the induction stove is NOT a heating device.
Is that sarcasm? I don't understand what's going on here.
Nice (nerdy) video, talking mostly nonsense about crap that the casual crowd could care less about……..using all that equipment to measure this and that. I suppose it makes some folks feel important to use all those gadgets to feel important, who knows.
The bottom line is……. Consumer Reports rates this brand as the best rated induction portable on the market. Don’t worry about all the ridiculous nonsense shown in this video, it’s just nerd talk.
Interesting take
