you could also tap the threads to the next size larger bolt then lathe the new bolt to the iD of the shock remove the new larger bolt head then thread the end and screw on a closed head chrome nut with out tearing the bike apart 2 -3 hr job and a mechanic who can use a lathe and a tap and die

He ended up probably paying more than he would have to just bring it to you in the first place. I did do rears myself but lifted the rear up and made sure things were going in easy! Do that and you’re fine, then get the suspension properly set for you afterward! Also very important!

It doesn’t matter what you’re working on, engineers designed those parts to work together within the tolerances they are designed with. With that in mind, everything should go back into place with only mild resistance!
I’ve been working on cars and bikes for over 25 years. Last year when I did my friends ‘05 RK cam chain tensioners, he asked me why I was using the manual. He said as long as I’ve been working on engines I should know all this stuff. I asked him if he’s ever had to return anything I’ve worked on for him. He just grinned and took a drink of his beer.

Been working on all kinds of bikes for 42 years was taught by a old timer .Always open the Manuel to what your working on you might not need it but its there. Hell cant remember everything sometimes a quick look will clear up the brain fart .Doc your video's are tops.
The first thing I buy for my new bikes is the service manual. $20 online can safe you hundreds of dollars. Picked up a black widow pro lift. Best $2000 I have ever spent. With a lift and a service manual you can do pretty much anything.

The difference of pricing between countries, I’m in New Zealand and a Clymer manual for Dynas cost $120 nz but bought a slightly used bike lift, not air but foot pump hydraulic from a friend moving to another country for $200😀. The American grey coloured airlift ones are over $2k here but our dollar buys U.S 57c at the moment so imagine the price of a new Harley….
I’ve swapped suspension on my bikes. When you said people do it without jacking up their bike, it blows my mind. It’s tricky enough getting the second shock to be exactly in line for the last bolt hole. Who in the world would try it like that.
Great advice, Doc! There's some easier things I feel confident with, like fluid changes, accessory installation, etc,, but for the majority of the heavy lifting, sometimes a man's gotta know his limitations. 🤣🤷♂️
I installed my own shocks both front and rear however I did use Ohlins' own UA-cam video to do it. Went well and I learned a lot about my bike and it was enjoyable to do.
Know your limits. Replacing rear shock(s) is not that hard if you have the right tools - which most DIY folks would have. A small scissor lift to support the bike is relatively inexpensive and could come in handy for other projects as well. Working on the front forks is a whole different ball-game - a job for the experts - just pay the money.
Having the right tools for the job is critical! Did a complete replacement of my stock suspension, front and rear, and made sure I triple checked and cross referenced the H-D repair manual with the suspension manufacturer instructions. By doing that, I found discrepancies in the suspension manufacturer’s instructions and saved myself Hundreds of Dollars (H-D)! 😂
I have all three service manuals for my 2016 Ultra Limited. That’s the Service manual, Electrical, and the IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) and I have two Dunwell lifts.
I replaced the air shocks on my 2010 Touring bike about 7 years ago with Harley adjustable shocks and don’t remember it being a hassle. Think I did it on jiffy stand too. Maybe got lucky.
If the motor/trans/swingarm was lined up correctly and truly perpendicular with frame on assembly line with an adjustable top motor mount people could install shocks a whole lot easier and also the bike would track straighter and wear tires better.
Yes, completely agree with you, if you don’t know how to use tools or know basic mechanics, please pay someone. But like you said, some dealers charge an arm and others an arm and a leg for a simple job. I do my own oil changes, did front fork suspension, rear suspension, full exhaust, handler bars, etc. and I am speechless at how much a dealer charges to do some of this work. Like really, $400 for a k service or up to 600? For a 20 minute job and check some nuts and bolts? Get a service manual and learn it and do what it tells you. Save yourself thousands of dollars! Ride safe and god bless!
Harley owners can be notoriously tight. I had to modify a lift for my dyna. Welded some box sections to clear the sump and frame. The ram is supposedly rated at 1500 lbs but that makes the lift around 600 lbs with the leverage. I'm ok with pushing a bit with 630 but those budget lifts aren't up to a dressed bagger.

This reminded me of the UA-cam channel. Where I watched a guy have his 1200 Bonneville flop over on the ground. Attempting the same job. Apparently, they forget the bike weighs 500lbs? For some unknown reason. He tried to let it rest on the sidestand, with only 1 rear shock installed. He's lucky he wasn't crushed by the bike, like many are. I hate to admit it. But I've had to lift many a hard starting HD, off of drunken buddies. The good ole kickstarter. Prevents impaired riders from dieing every night. Peace.

usually love doc harley videos,but this one just shows what I've said for years..dealerships only throw parts at it instead of repairing.. that bike did not need a complete swing arm replaced...1 they make taps so you can repair threads...2 threads too messed up,tgey make inserts that will repair it.. 3 if really messed up you can always weld hole up,re-drill and tap hole...doc,I really love your stuff,but this one shows how every dealership I've ever dealt with does things..can not repair,just throw a $300 part at it and charge the customer big bucks.
What you have posted fits well with an independent shop that is willing to take a chance and cover the liability. The cost ( lawyer) is too great for our dealership to take. Please post who has a tail section jig for perfect repair. Or who charges less for the time and talent to repair that is less than a new part. I’m willing to learn and still be called a Stealership by you…..Doc
i spent 34 years in auto insurance and we dealt with lots of repairs that someone "could do" differently and supposedly cheaper and just as good. the problem is having done it that way, it has not been engineered or tested. it is just someone who "knows" it will be just as good. the proper repair procedure comes from the manufacturer. it is engineered to be the same as it came from the factory. i'm going with the assumption that if it is sitting in Doc's bay and they determine it needs changed, then it does. now have i done things that aren't a proper procedure? yes i have, but that is my own bike and by my own choice. i own that.
dealership brain...my last30 + years have been as mechanic in plastic industry mostly,repairing vaccum forming equipment,injection mold equipment,extruders and much more..swing arm does not have to come off,no need for a jig...retap hole to larger bolt..shock is already on a shoulder bolt...just need new bolt...same size shoulder,just larger threaded end.. bolts can be bought at grainger or fasteners plus.. so that would be simple,cheap and easy...even if he had you do it at $80 hr shop rate..two hr or less needed in time and much better than price of new swing arm plus your rate for install. I also have restored my 65 ford F100..my 29 model A ford..my 1984 kawasaki 1300 6 cylinder..rebuilt transmission on my 60 panhead..converted it over to shovel top on my pan lower..myself..no job needed..this is a DIY capable job.
I have the standard air shocks on my Electra Glide Classic. I figure HD spends more than I do th set up a motorcycle. So, for the most part, my 09 is stock.
I ride a 05 ultraclassic. It had the O.E.M rear air. After about 80k miles, it rode like a 12-yard emty dump truck. I had 12" legends installed all four corners. the difference was from dump truck to Cadillac.
Thought I was going to hear something profoundly technical. Wouldn't that be like changing the shocks on your car without jacking the car up? Ya, don't do that! Thanks Doc.
Some can't turn a wrench and others shouldn't. Off subject question Doc: I know they've been around for awhile but, how will a Rushmore fairing keep the rain off of you. Take any of them a shine a flashlight from the outside in and you see light. If you can than water, sand and wind will get to you and right in the face. As always Thanks.
Doc, drilling the threads out tapping it and using a time sert or hellicoil not a option? I know a subframe on ebay be under 200 dollars . I also know time is money . lot of parts come off to replace the subframe.
I should have said the hole was damaged 3 sizes larger. Two helicoils and a time sert maybe? My personal opinion even welding up the hole a tapping straight would not be cost effective…..Doc
This situation happens more often than it should. You have to have the proper tools and equipment it's that simple. Rear shocks are easy, front...nope taking it to the dealer as it's out of my knowledge and comfort zone.
I have a question for you Doc Harley I recently put a new choke cable on my oh1 road and now I can’t get it to start with the problem. I didn’t get the choke cable put incorrectly or something else. Thank you for your input.
Too many unknowns. I am assuming you did not have a problem before installing the new choke cable? Recheck your installation to see if something else got in the way….Doc
Don't these people read instructions?? It says to jack up the bike so the back wheel is off the ground! I still had the pros at my local Harley shop do the work! You still have to tweak the suspension for your riding style too!

I just changed the rear shocks on my Ultra. Really easy job. WITH a motorcycle jack and torque wrench.
When I was a dealer tech (import cars) we called that the “Stupid Tax”.

I'm sure that you don't have to replace the frame. Just a ploy to make money. Helicopter it or welding and retap the threads.

Why not repair the thread with an insert. Replacing whole subframe is ridiculous.

I recently put a new choke cable on my oh1 road and now I can’t get it to start with the problem. I didn’t get the choke cable put incorrectly or something else. Thank you for your input.
Too many unknowns. I am assuming you did not have a problem before installing the new choke cable? Recheck your installation to see if something else got in the way….Doc

Wiring!!! I can't tell you how many times I have had to fix a rats nest of wiring. Some people are just not meant to turn a wrench.

Don't these people read instructions?? It says to jack up the bike so the back wheel is off the ground! I still had the pros at my local Harley shop do the work! You still have to tweak the suspension for your riding style too!
