He did say he would and went to great lengths to get him here and if your sibling died leaving behind a child and they had no one else wouldn't you? When he knew his nephew had been orphaned he flew straight there! If he didn't mind his nephew being raised by strangers he wouldn't have fought so hard to get him here. You wouldn't do that and then surrender the child to foster care -the point is he knew he would be better off with family (children in orphanages and Foster care suffer very high rates of abuse) and he would know that which I imagine would be one of the primary motivations to take him in
it actually takes YEARS usually to have an asylum seeker status granted and in the interim they can't legally seek employment or claim benefits or use the NHS, they use the charity doctors without Borders, so I don't know what burden to the taxpayer you are talking about, after 1 year of waiting (it usually takes several years) asylum seekers who are waiting can go into care work and usually do helping prop up a system that desperately needs more staff! Asylum seekers are usually keen and desperate to work. The home office makes it as difficult for them as possible

Is "whataboutism" brought about by a rightful sense of guilt, or unease? If so, I personally think that's good news, because it's a sign of peoples' consciences showing them the direction that they really feel that they ought to take, themselves.
