I'm from the UK and have the Beta Stick thing (very similar) and it's a very common sight around the local crag. It just feels much more secure having the first bolt clipped rather than climbing unprotected for 4 or so metres, especially as I'm quite new to leading. Also it just makes it nicer and easier to try harder climbs. Love the videos!
in my climbing area (southern-germany) the first bolts are almost all the time at 4-5 Metres (i guess about 15 feet) and noone is using a clip-stick... The reason, why there are no bolts further down is because it was always like that and it would change the grade if there would be more bolts on the route. I always wanted to buy one, because sometimes it feels incredibly dangerous and unsecure... I think i will finally get one :D Getting rid of those stupid "traditions" and getting at least a bit more of that safety... Keep on doing the great work, thanks :)
Sounds like a great idea to me! If it was a traditional route I would definitely put in what ever pieces I could to make the climb safer so why wouldn’t you do the same with bolts? Lol
@@BetaClimbers haha seems like you have never got in touch with those german-traditional-climber-peeps... Incredibly weird guys with iron-minds. You cant change them, neither can you make a compromise... At least they are changing those old/rusty bolts so the climb is a bit safer... You definitly have to check those routes if you ever come to Germany!
Hier oben im Ith ist es ähnlich, oft sind nur Bohrhaken an Stellen, die besonders schwierig sind. Und selbst bei "gut" geschützten Routen ist es meistens hilfreich ein Paar Keile dabei zu haben.
I prefer the super clip because it's metal I know someone who had the squid, dropped it and it broke. Amazon has a 4 to 12 foot adjustable paint Pole called mr. Long arm it's a little heavier than the thinner types but it works great as a walking stick and extends 12ft.
Hey, nice video, I have had a squid for about 6 or 7 years. I rarely use it but when I do it generally works fine. I attach it to an extendable painting pole so it can get up about 4 or 5 meters. I really appreciate your effort to push the helmet issues.
I definitely appreciate this video - I climb out at Smith rock, and like many spots it's got some pretty high first bolts and often tricky first moves. I don't really understand why people hate on stick clips, but I appreciate that you made this video, as it definitely has convinced me that they're a good investment
I did my stick clip for 15$, works good and also good to have a stick in a hand in hard hiking condition, mainly at the end of the day to go down tired with heavy bag on your back.
I know a better dirt bag option 1. Get a long Woden stick (tree branch) often found next to the crag 2. Tape the carabiner to one end of the of the big stick(not to good but stable) 3. Get a really small Stick(like a bigger tooth pick) 4. Juse that stick so the gate will stay open. You basically jam the stick between the gate and the top noch of the Beener(the part with the hook Weber the gate goes) And done If you now hook a bolt the stick will fall down with not much pressure the beener is in the Bolt Now get with a bit of force get rid of the tape on the Bébée any Branch Did you get it I could send you a pic for details That method works perfect for the first bolt
Clipping high above is Just way more difficult, then doing so at Home... Hardly seeing the bolt up there, wobbling Stick, rope weight when clipping 20 feet up is a complete different story btw
Just get a shop alligator clamp and latch it to the stick with a pipe clamp, costs $5 and works perfect. (Also you can stick a brush in the alligator clamp too so i use it when i go bouldering as well)
Yeah I think you can 3D print something cool 😎 I was actually thinking about giving that a try for the video too but would have took me a few days to come up with something.
Some of the plastics commonly used in 3D printing are fairly brittle and not very strong. I know it wouldn't be load-bearing, but it could still get whacked against a rock.
With the SuperClip, the Draw Invert method is WAY easier for removing draws from a bolt. So much easier that I prefer to just take my pre-hung draws down to re-hang a rope, rather than trying to lasso the rope into a hanging draw.
Would be interested to see how a solution would be available for those in Australia that have carrot bolts only and a clipstick does not work in those situations as a hanger needs to be placed before hand.
Video of your Dad's climb would be kickass. Looking forward to that one.
Agreed!

Heyyyy you’re talking about Gus Fruh on the greenbelt!
I like the DIY method but with a tree branch instead of that fancy white stick you used.
Fancy lol 😂

Rather use a clip stick than end up in a “climbing fails” video!! Thanks for the vid mate!
I have the superclip and found it needing stretching out before use. Then it was great! Painters poles from Lowes work really well with it.

I've seen 3d printing models for such a stick. Do you think they do work?

I use a 3d printed one, it works, but you can't use it to unclip

I live in caneticut there was top roping trad and boldring no bolts
Same here in the gunks that’s prob why I never owned on lol
Ken just chopped all of them if some on tried
Thank you, man! Shooting from the ground is very realistic 😂
Need to include rodeo clipping for when the quickdraws are already up, although Magnus Mitdbo has a very good demonstration.
Is there any way to connect the squid to a branch?
there is nothing you cant fix with enough duct tape
@@BetaClimbers Good point! ahahha
Your dad's route out at Millbrook? I talked to him about it once.
No some strange one, he use a 30 ft pole to place the first piece of gear near the mental block
Video could have really used some close up shots. It's hard to see what's going on.
Yeah good point my wife said the same thing, I think I’ll post some close ups in my Instagram! 👍🏻or UA-cam story
@@BetaClimbers That'd be nice. Thanks for the content though, love all your stuff!
