@@rendered1002 Absolutely, I came here to say this! The design used in the Peter Jackson films and subsequently this show came directly from The Fellowship of the Ring!
You nailed it when you said: "People think they can do Tolkien better than Tolkien." And that's the issue with modern TV and doing prequels or redoing classics (like Disney). It reflects the main issue with postmodernity, where we want the story to fit into our time, rather than letting the story, which the author wrote in a specific context, inform our culture. The whole Numenor storyline right now actually feels like Kamala Harris vs. Trump. And the cultural/political stabs here and there are reminiscent of today's day and age. At times it just feels highly 'wokist' in its approach - like the clear bad guys (orcs) aren't bad guys. Evil always has a backstory which led to it becoming evil. Sure, you could also attribute that to the lore, where Morgoth wasn't evil at first. (Pretty similar to Christianity with Satan becoming a fallen angel). But the orcs were created evil. From an evil that, yes, was possibly good first...but became evil nonetheless to breed more evil. So yeah....
Tolkein was not writing for a 21st century audience, nor for the screen. It's unquestionable that people can do Tolkein better than he did. The issue is, whether this, or even the Peter Jackson movies accomplish that goal.

0:25 this episode wasn’t all bad. This was the best episode of the show. There was some good acting. There was some good writing. I’m kinda in shock. I was able to watch the second half of the episode without falling asleep once. 3/5 overall score. 6/5 for rings of power.
I'm not gonna lie, I always enjoyed the Hobbit series. No it's not on the same level as the lord of the ring trilogy, but I've never not liked the trilogy. ROP definitely makes the Hobbit series that much better for sure haha
@@Don9872 I agree, it's weird because the visuals are nice in ROP and for the most part I like the sets, costumes, and practical orks, but its just doesn't feel like Tolkien world. I know its the script and acting and some of the actors dont feel like the right choice for the job, but in the lord of the rings and hobbit films the casting was on point plus the script.
I thought this episode started reasonably well but around the midpoint it just got messy and stupid again. Things just happen for no reason and the pacing is terrible at times. With the Numenor and Eregion storylines I feel like I’ve missed some episodes that explain plot and character developments. Forget about lore deviations and whether this is good Tolkien or not. It’s the most expensive TV show ever made and it feels like it was crafted by amateurs. I’ve said this multiple times but this should have been great. I think that’s why so many people are so disappointed but keep watching in the hope that it can hit those heights. Unfortunately I think it’s becoming obvious that it won’t.
"Things just happen for no reason and the pacing is terrible at times." It feels to me like every scene is made with the motivation of 'what's the coolest thing we can make right now!' and how it fits into the larger framework of the show isn't considered. So, you may end up with individual scenes that seem good in the moment, but taken as a whole, it suffers.
I am not really into the lore but I appreciate your realistic perspective on the show and its obvious amateurish writing flaws. It makes me wonder, why some people can not accept your well-founded criticism. I subscribed and looking forward to further videos!
@@NicoleStevensHays11x I don't understand you? @@NicoleStevensHays11x Why does that bother you? Just don‘t watch these videos then. There are enough channels who praise the show. But I agree, that it is pointless to watch these shows, if it of no value to oneself. The valid criticism keeps being unheard anyways.
Watching Charlie Vickers’ performance of manipulating those around him with nothing but his words makes me think he would make a pretty convincing young Palpatine if Star Wars ever explored his early years based on the Darth Plagueis novel.
@@FishyWizzyheck no! Vickers is perfect! He brings to life how Sauron could have pulled off his bs. Tolkein neglected to write the best potential stories by writing hardly anything about this era except the fall of numenor
One of the many things I’m struggling is David “Gil-Galad” Cameron. He’s supposed to be a warrior lord? I reckon he’ll not be at the final alliance and it’ll be Galadriel that cuts the ring from Sauron’s hand…. I can see it coming……😮
In the time it took elrond to run to eregion, the dwarves gathered in khaza dum, went to party with celebrimbor and a message was sent back to gilgalad the other way... Make it make sense!!!!!
Question, all the palantir are on numenor at this time, they only go to Middle earth with elendil, and Sauron only gets them once he starts taking Gondor’s city’s so how are they evil? Why are they making it a big deal that paharazon would touch one?
Question: was Peter Jackson offered the position of writing the show and he declined or was he never offered the position? We can only imagine how great this show would have been if this had been given to him.
@@the5as1marchingarts apparently Amazon came to Jackson for input and potential direction and when he told them he didn’t like what they had and their ideas were way off point they just kind of ghosted him.
Thanks for this. We really have to watch this show with absolutely no lore in mind. Otherwise it's only disappointing. This episode picked up the pace, and as you said, became too fast here and there. I find it so hard to really care for any of the main characters. Their character arcs develop either too fast or seem highly improbable. The writing for the dialogue between Brimby and Annatar just doesn't seem believable at all. There are constantly huge heart changes around massive issues. Like Durin suddenly being all for digging deeper (and yes, due to the ring's seemingly instant corruption). Brimby going from: "No, I won't make rings for men" to "Alright, let's just do it" (in ONE episode). If S1 had focused solely on all these pivotal relationships, we'd be well invested in them by now. All I care about now is to see Semen (not wait, it's Kemen) die a very fast, gruesome death. But he won't. He will become Witch-king (or some have posited Mouth of Sauron)...more like b**** of Sauron :/ DOORS OF DURIN: I reckon they want us to think that Sauron had his hands in those as well. After all, when the fellowship gets to K, there's the Watcher in the water. And the Watcher is part of Team Sauron. It's another item where we look at it and go: Oh, that's beautiful...but NO, it's actually not. NUMENOR: That whole storyline right now with the fictional characters is not working for me. You correctly addressed the daughter-father issue there. Loved the Dead Poet's Society reference! I think Elendil finally got screen time to get us invested in him properly.
Love you guys. Yes Amazon invited you last time, but led never to you chilling for them. As the show is concerned I also see it mainly like you, with the only exception that the mentioning of first age characters like Daeron, Barahir etc. for the book readers actually makes me angry. If you want to unit Tolkien then follow his stories and the Lord and do not prostitute out the names of his great characters just for namedropping. I also like Charlie Wickers as Annatar
Risky saying it's like being in an abusive relationship, we know what you meant! Like being in a dead end job then you box turning up with some doughnuts on a Thursday

My brother said so many legacy IP productions are filled with people that actively hated the series. After Starwars and Lotr latest debacles I’m starting to believe him
Muriel’s dialogue with Elendil was frustrating. I had no idea what she was saying. Seems like he asked permission to fight back….she said no we need to protect this new timeline…then says he has her command, then tells him to just go back to his ship.
It feels like someone put the time line on a spreadsheet and double clicked the time by accident and just printed it out before handing it to the writers, honestly that would make it make more since and is going forward my head canon so I can try to make it through this show.
I just find myself constantly cringing at the overuse of analogies and sesquipedalian speech (did you see what I did there😂) and fast forwarding past the dialogue.
Okay now I have watched this episode, its far better than the last one cause every single iritating character has been off and idk I enjoyed this episode in a way, and Kemen will meet "ill ends" = Witch King maybe🤮
Yeah the criticisms of are actually starting to get petty on every little detail, the show is not perfect, but the pacing has improved much more than season 1, every episode actually has action, there is a bit more of character development or more convincing with choices of characters
Pretty sure it’s the opposite. Celebrimbor is going to be killed before Galadriel and Elrond can get there so they won’t get to warn him before it’s too late. Annatar probably does fight with the elves at first, until Elrond and/or Galadriel break through to try and face him.

Best episode of the season. And great overall. Some issues, especially regarding Adar. A orc army galadriel team up seems weird. Hopefully arondir can save her from that. It was good to focus on the storylines that matters; numenor, Eregion/Khazad dum and Lindon.
If Dwarves are greedy and if the rings made for the Dwarves make them greedier, why wouldn't Durin keep the rings within his power and give it to dwarves closer to him rather then give it to other dwarf leaders? I know he can then ask for riches in exchange, but riches would not be hard to come by having so much power in his grasp and riches can be gained by exploring the mountain (he himself says that they have explored a fraction of the mountain). This type of power, on the other hand, is something quite rare.
Tolkien built a world. Only so many pages published. Lot's of other ideas. When you "read" LOTR, your mind IS filling in a lot of details that he did not write down. Wanting to keep that world alive by creating a story based on some of Tolkien's ideas, and the writers imagination, is not a crime, even though not to everyone's taste. It feels like a lot of folks (who may have never read the books, nor written anything themselves) just enjoy tearing this production apart. As someone else said in this thread, just try to enjoy what there is in front of you. Yes, the plot has holes. A lot of tripe we watch has holes. But as someone who has read LOTR several times, I'm enjoying the production, like the take on Galadriel, and the small folk, and especially slowly exposing the essence of Gandalf, as a Maiar, and that whole backstory.
while we're finally starting to see some canonish stuff the other stuff has ruined me on taking what/how they're doing these things seriously. Even the canonish stuff we're finally getting to now seems so hamfistedly done. It's too dang goofy
I think the half-foot and wizard sideline is still better than the Numenor scenes, lol. Personally, I think the Fall of Numenor should be its own TV series. It just feels like a chore watching those scenes. It ONLY got interesting this past episode.

@@TheBrokenSwordit’s an interesting one as in my opinion they do great analysis, but it is on the positive side. Yes, the show has its problems. But to be honest, sometimes I just want to enjoy something without having to be inundated with a constant barrage of negativity. I subscribe to a lot of Tolkien channels, and some of them I just have to stop watching while Rings of Power is airing. I'm a huge Tolkien nerd, not a scholar but I know a shit ton of stuff. But I am also aware of how adapting stories to a visual medium works. I know how challenging it is to compress over three thousand years into one series so that viewers will watch and be attached to the characters' stories. I understand the challenges of copyright issues. Most importantly, I understand that after a certain point, a story leaves the writer's hands and becomes the ownership of the fans. Like Harry Potter - F JKR, but thankfully the story is now bigger than she is and no longer really hers. Tolkien is now that as well, and Tolkien himself was constantly changing his mind and revising the story. Like myths throughout the years, the story can change as languages and cultures evolve. Tolkien even wrote stuff as though it was a collection of stories, a mythology, and translated by him. Translations of stories thousands of years old aren't going to be perfect translations, and I think we need to see the Tolkien universe in that light. Like how Greek mythology is now adapted in all sorts of ways that are very little like the original stories. Anyhow, the whole point is that I'm tired of some in the Tolkien fandom turning it into the toxic fandom that plagues Star Wars. (And I'm not just talking about the anti-woke factions.) For that reason, I'm actually going to unsubscribe from this channel. I love a lot of the videos you've put out over the years, but the constant negativity and bad faith reviewing is a giant turnoff. I just want to enjoy seeing Tolkien onscreen, even if it's not a perfect adaptation.
This show isn't the complete travesty that other shows have turned out to be. A lot in there to like. It's the adaptation choices and writing that lets it down for me.
Spoiler warning for late season 3, possibly early season 4... Durin 100% breaks his promise, puts on a ring, Disa then leaves him, takes the kids and half of Durins money & belongings, and moves into a cave in the Mountain... In the end Durin will come crawling back saying how right Disa was, and then she goes on to save the Dwarves and is remembered as the most important and strongest Dwarf in the history of Middle Earth... Songs will be sung, statues will be carved!!! And then Durin looks at Disa and tells her how great she is at singing, and how beautiful and strong and independent she is, and that he knows she doesn't really need him around, but he is very thankful that she decided to allow him to stay by her side! Hmmmmm... 🤔... I think i just jokingly wrote the season 3 finale!! I'm kinda scared to post this because we all know the writers don't have any good ideas, and may watch this video and see this and think its the best thing since sliced bread...!!! 🙄
That said I recognize that your critiquing the show on a different level than I am. Still this episode has: More action Faster plot Sauron being Sauron Callbacks to the lore Celebrimbor actor doing a good job And personally, I like Adar and the idea that though he's been corrupted, but until Sauron obtains the ring of power he can't fully dominate the orcs, as they would actually have souls and can make their own choices.
At least 4 good actors. With Disa, Arondir, Anatar, and Elrond. The rest ought to have thier careers cast in the fires of Mount Mediocre. Condemned to B movies and c list Tubi originals till the ends of this age
What is impressive is the huge lack of knowledge the writers have about the characters. I would forgive it if they at least wrote them accordingly with Peter Jackson's trilogy (They were perfectly written for movies that had to tell such a huge story lore wise.) Yet they simply ruin important characters that have a huge legacy. Galadriel is one of the eldest Elves in the whole story, instead she is written like a 20 yo college girl. Elrond who is from a great line of Elves and is known for his wisdom is written as a sceptic antagonistic dude that shouldn't have a thing to say to Galadriel. Sauron an angelic being of great might is simply killed by an orc in the most simplistic and pathetic way. Isildur who is known as a great warrior is reduced to some child that knows nothing of the world. It is frustrating. Never would Galadriel rush recklessly into anything, never would she ignore Elrond's concerns. Never would prime Sauron get outsmarted by an orc, nor would he ever need to be crowned/accepted by orcs. His might alone would grant him such an influence over the mind of these lesser beings. The show is written by people who are trying to transpose todays society into a magnificent story. Galadriel is the 20 yo woman, that needs to free herself from the shackles of the patriarchy and experiment the world by her rules. Elrond is the lesser knowledgeable male, that has no say in what is right or wrong. Sauron is the dumb and evil being that needs a powerful woman at his side to achieve his goal. It needs to stop...
I’m jealous of you, bro. Glad you’re enjoying ROP. Keep on liking what you like, and don’t let the rest of us bring you down. I wish I could like this show.
I cant stand the strange changes to lore and timelines. Killing off Valendil, while he ends up as the surviving heir to Elendil followong the deaths of Anarion and Isildur? Sauron knowing about the 3 before he has forged the 1? Ffs, the writers are so terrible.
All things aside (break of canon, etc), what makes this show the most unbearable for me is my utter lack of care for the characters. The writers have done a horrific job with character development. Any one of these characters could croke and I’d give zero F’s. Because I don’t care about any of them. There’s no emotional connection to any of the characters.
If they dont do the full 5 series it would be due to people such as yourselves who only pick out the negatives and discourage people from watching it. For example, it was a disater that the fantastic beasts films (JK Rowling) were discontinued. Loads on people wants these shows to comtinue.

There’s definitely a good story half buried in the hobbit films. I can’t be so kind to the rings of power.
I have to say I like the Dwarves in ROP more then Hobbit, but the story telling in this is just bad, it's so bad.
At least it was better acting and story telling the rings of power

"Things just happen for no reason and the pacing is terrible at times."
It feels to me like every scene is made with the motivation of 'what's the coolest thing we can make right now!' and how it fits into the larger framework of the show isn't considered.
So, you may end up with individual scenes that seem good in the moment, but taken as a whole, it suffers.
Ffs, the doors of durin are drawn by tolkien in the books
Rings off power is a bit like manchester united. You hope for the best, but kep on watching it to find out how far they can fall.
I am not really into the lore but I appreciate your realistic perspective on the show and its obvious amateurish writing flaws. It makes me wonder, why some people can not accept your well-founded criticism.

Thanks for the reaction, keep being honest please
He will become Witch-king (or some have posited Mouth of Sauron)...more like b**** of Sauron :/
DOORS OF DURIN:
I reckon they want us to think that Sauron had his hands in those as well. After all, when the fellowship gets to K, there's the Watcher in the water. And the Watcher is part of Team Sauron. It's another item where we look at it and go: Oh, that's beautiful...but NO, it's actually not.
NUMENOR:
That whole storyline right now with the fictional characters is not working for me.

The writing…..oh dear. It’s like they wrote a script then threw a thesaurus at every word. It’s so unnecessarily convoluted
I have this horrible feeling in episode 6, Galadriel is going to fight with Adar and Annatar is going to fight with the elves against the orcs 😩
Then you have not paid attention in the slightest if that's your prediction 😂
Pretty sure it’s the opposite. Celebrimbor is going to be killed before Galadriel and Elrond can get there so they won’t get to warn him before it’s too late. Annatar probably does fight with the elves at first, until Elrond and/or Galadriel break through to try and face him.

But as someone who has read LOTR several times, I'm enjoying the production, like the take on Galadriel, and the small folk, and especially slowly exposing the essence of Gandalf, as a Maiar, and that whole backstory.

best episode of the show so far to be honest
OMG I don't know how you thought this was the best one this season I yelled at the screen for this one.

Songs will be sung, statues will be carved!!! @@Yugemos I think they are decent. Especially considering the horrid material
Honestly this was a good episode

I cant stand the strange changes to lore and timelines. Killing off Valendil, while he ends up as the surviving heir to Elendil followong the deaths of Anarion and Isildur? Sauron knowing about the 3 before he has forged the 1? Ffs, the writers are so terrible.
Par for the course.
@Welverin unfortunately. I really wanted to enjoy this show. I suppose a casual viewer or tolkien fan could.
Is the rings of power actual cannon? Any of it?
I’m guessing cannon is anything and everything written by a Tolkien… this show uses some ‘cannon’ points, and also brand new story and characters.
I feel the makers of this show are pandering really hard trying to get people to watch this show.
I disagree, there's a negative emotional connection to Galadriel. I'd be happy if she died but that's impossible.
I think Disa's reaction was more due to the fact that she had been overlooked and was no longer needed.
If they dont do the full 5 series it would be due to people such as yourselves who only pick out the negatives and discourage people from watching it. For example, it was a disater that the fantastic beasts films (JK Rowling) were discontinued. Loads on people wants these shows to comtinue.
