  • In the 1920s and 30s, South and Lombard Streets in South Philadelphia were bastions of entertainment for the city's thriving black community. A trio of long-gone theaters - the Dunbar (later the Lincoln), the Standard, and the Royal Theatres hosted the likes of Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, and countless black musicians and groups.

Philly is awesome. I moved to North Philly when I was in high school. Even though I’m from NYC, they embraced me as if I were a native. Philly became my new hometown.

My childhood friend Godmom told me that when she first came to Philly, her first job was delivering jukeboxes to restaurants on South Street and Center City. She said she did this in the 1930's.
