Your the best UA-camr for clearing my doubts about sony mirrorless cameras and its lens.. thank you so much and keep up the good work
Many UA-camr be like: "16-50 best lens ever"! Me looking a this video -.-
This video was extremely helpful and makes me think the 28-70 gets some undeserved hate. Other than being a small zoom range it seems great for the money!
My only critique on this video is that for people using this lens on an APSC body, you didn't mention that it would be darker than the 16-50. Yes, they are both rated at f3.5-5.6, but the 28-70 is sized for a full frame camera and is projecting light onto a 35mm sensor size. Technically that light is going into your camera, but because APSC sensors are smaller, some light will be hitting the area around the sensor and not the sensor itself, meaning shots taken on the 28-70 will look a stop or two darker than the same shot on the 16-50. I hope that makes sense, its a complicated mechanic to try to describe.
If you want sharpness, go 28-70. If you want brightness, go 16-50.
Nice
But f stops are calculated based on focal length and the size of the aperture blades. So in theory, they should have about the same amount of light hitting an APS-C sized sensor.
(But the 28-70 does have more glass in it therefore, a bit more light will be lost.)
Both of them are f3.5-5.6, but on an APS-C sized sensor, some light won't be captured due to the 1.5x crop factor, so the equivalent amount of light on a full frame sensor will both be f5.2-8.3
What I'm trying to say is the difference in brightness isn't that big
Was thinking on the 28-70 , now you have sold me
Great work on this comparison video. The "lost lines of resolution" story when you use an FE lens on a aps cropped sensor is a misleading oversimplification, people. Using less of the area of the lens is a dual edge sword, but has potential benefits for the cropped sensor camera and they are apparent here. By using the central "heart" of the lens, edge distortion is greatly reduced. If you were simply cropping out the center of two identical lenses you'd expect the cropped one to be less sharp, because minute imperfections in the lens would be magnified in the cropped sensor image. But full frame lenses are larger (and heavier) and have more glass - so they aren't equal. The FE glass can have real benefits for the aps-c shooter, but with that penalty of size and weight. Thanks for showing this so clearly in the video.
This was a terrific review. I went this way in both the older lens mentioned and in this one (28:70) for my a6500 and your review sort of confirmed my selections. I really do not like the Minolta lenses (as a Nikon & Hasselblad person) and never have for numerous reasons but the results and electronics of the native brand stuff seem to work better for AF and some other functions than using my adapted Nikkor lenses on my Minolta/Sony cameras.
A few have laughed at my use of the older 18:55 (silver) but the results speak for themselves, especially for the factors you pointed out. I just wish that there were an AF/Manual switch on the Sony lens line as most other manufacturers have engineered since in many cases the AF hunts and it is just easier to focus manually.
If you actually knew Sony's design philosophy for the 16-50mm, you wouldn't have been surprised. The lens is as small as it is because Sony opted for this design with the understanding that such a philosophy comes at a cost, namely corner sharpness and distortion. They realized that most people using this lens would be more inclined to use jpeg and that they could automatically address distortion with in camera software without the shooter even knowing that this was a problem. In essence, Sony correctly assumed that most people who use this lens would be more apt to appreciate its compact size and electronic zoom, while ignoring its shortcomings. The lens expertly does what it was intended to do. It is a small and compact lens with acceptable center sharpness wide open and decent sharpness when stopped down. It is not intended for critical photography or paid work. If you understand its limitations, you can obtain some very compelling images with this lens. This lens transforms any A6000 series camera into a small and very capable travel camera. Most people who use this lens won't even exploit its full potential.
Add some extension tubes to it and there you go, you now have a very decent macro lens.
@Nou Stor | I am using the ones from Meike. It comes with two extension tubes with 10 mm and 16 mm markings which you can also combine to have a 26 mm extension tube. Make sure that you will purchase the correct variant for your lens mount.
I've always wondered how well a 28-70 will work on a crop sensor camera. Thanks again for another great comparison!
I'm going to use it for a photoshoot tomorrow. A6000 then the a6500. I literally just picked it up for $100 I'm excited to use it!
@@thalegacy6 how did it perform with the a6500? 👍
66th like
Pity there is no sharpness comparison with the 16-50 set to 28mm - because that is one of its stronger zoom settings.
Thank you for another great video. I'm looking at the 28-70 right now and I think I will buy based on your comparison.
Using the center portion of a full frame lens is actually good, because there is usually more distortions and lack of focus around the edges, and no you are not giving up any "lines of resolution" you are still using the entire APS-C sensor to capture the image.
Nice comparison video! The FE Kit lens seems to be much better also if the 16-50 Kit lens isn’t bad in my experience
Again, best gear reviews on YT
Thank you for that, it was a valuable comparison.
Very nice test, we have to consider than the full frame lenses on an aps-c camera they use only the center of the lenses not in the corner
I have the 28-70 kit lens and use it both on my Sony a6000 and a7ii. It's very good on the 6000 and even better on the full frame camera. I have had several sharp pictures from this lens. I have also taken some good portrait shots with it. No it's not as sharp as my 85mm 1.8, but still an excellent over all lens.
Would you recommend the 50mm 1.8 FE or the 85mm??
Would you recommend buying a6000 or a7ii for travel photography? I’m a newbie and travel a lot, having been using my iphone xs max with lightroom all the time but want some upgrade. I don’t take portraits though. Thanks!
Still true in 2021, I got mine with my new a7r in about 2015 (?) and now use it on my a6000 when I have both APSC kit lenses and the Sima trio.
Thanks you helped me alot 👏
Yes these are the videos I need for decisions with my a5100. I'm about to pick up this FE 24-70 for $150, replacing my 16-50 kit lens, and pairing together with my 56mm 1.4
did af work on the a5100 with the 28-70mm?
What a such nice and helpfull video man !! thanks
UPDATE: I never bought it but finally did this month ... It was $135 in absolutely mint condition. I actually like what I've seen so far it will be a nice addition to my lens selections. On my crop sensor bodies it gives me 42-105mm ... clear image zoom works with it too ... the quality is really good for video ... I hardly ever shoot stills. The OSS is very good. I also like that the zoom doesn't zoom out much ... easy to use on gimbal. I will be using this lens a lot ...
Hello, how the quality for pictures?
@@CSR2071 It is very good. I shoot regular jpg's and I like the results. The focal length range on my aps-c cameras is very useful.
Thank you for doing this!! Very good comparison and well presented..
I understand that using FE on APSC will get a slight magnification, it clearly shows at the widest focal distance but why does 50mm on both FE and E looks identical to me?
I bought the Sigma f1.4 16mm lens recently and my 16-50mm kit lens is sitting around. It sounds logical to change the 16-50mm to 28-70mm for a good coverage of telephoto, portrait and a bit of video. Thank you for your great explanation and example footage!
Die Unterschiede sind doch sehr erstaunlich und das obwohl das kleine 1650er gar nicht so schlecht ist - zumindest war es bei mir so
Good review sir 😍
I would be very interested in any reviews on the new Tamron 28-75 FF on the crop sensor cameras. Thanks for the video.
Steven Muncy yeah tamron 28-75 could be a great lense for aps-c but i think it's too narrow for street... 24-70 2.8 would have been better...
Absolutely. It's a bit long for street. But that 24-70 is huge and expensive.
I was thinking about a portrait (people) zoom. The 28 is ~the sensor diagonal so its normal for full length shots without distortion, the 75 gets you ~110, so its good for tight head shots. Also, with the close focusing of a FF lens on the cropped sensor, you can do a lot of detail shots. Nobody makes a reasonable people zoom for the crop sensors.
Steven Muncy yeah there's just the 18-105 and 16-70 Zeiss that aren't so good (and they are closed f4...)
Steven Muncy Me too once Tamron gets it fixed.
Did you know that photos taken with this lens have been featured on Behance for a couple of times now. It's all about the creativity of the user rather than the gear, probably.
Great review. I quickly ditched my 16-50 lens for the Sigma E 19mm 2.8 Art, Tamron FE 2.8 24 & 35mm, the Sony 50mm 1.8 FE and the Samyang 75mm 1.8 FE. The 28-70 is really good value for money also. Apart from the Sigma they all work great on both my a7ii & a6500.
Surely you would buy the tamron 28-75 f/2.8 instead. Will you test that? Great video.
Yeah, BUT, the Tamron is 3 times the cost! Everything has to factor in right?
I really enjoy your content, keep it up, and you have a beautiful model for your videos!!!
I also feel this has better OSS than the 16-50mm. Dont know why, videos seam a lot less shaky.
Finally found it, now i can finally chose the right one for me, thanks
Just bought this lens for my a6000 because of this video. My so bought a6400 because of your other video. You're awesome
Good review , I'll get it for my A7S II it will compens the defaults of this objectif!
Love ur channel. It's pretty much my go to channel everything Sony.
Nice review
The only reason I still have my 16-50 is that it's really quite good at 16mm, once you move above that it just gets worse and worse. If I had a dedicated wide angle it would simply never get used.
The 28-70mm lens surprisingly works well with the Sony ZV-E10!
This is the comment I was looking for lmao
@@rebekahpaternostro9732 haha me too xD
Do you think this will be good for car photography
How's this compare to the 18-135?
Hey man! I’m a big fan of yours back here in the Philippines and i hope you’ll have a comparison video between 7artisans 35mm F/1.2 and Kamlan 28mm F/1.4. Planning to buy one of them! Thanks a lot!
exactly what i was looking for thanks :)
I bought both of these for my A7C. I’ve heard APSC lens work will with full frame camera still just for video especially. And I do not have anything super wide for my new camera yet. So hopefully they both perform well for me.
good test, had been wondering how it performs as several shops sell 28-70 as a kit option with 6300/6500 , also would like to see how Zeiss 24-70 performs , 35-105 is a nice range.
Authur, Where do you sell your used lenses at? Ebay? Oh, great review as well :-)
Now I know to get this with my A7SIII vs Body Only jut like I did with my A6500 thanks
Awesome reviews
Thank you! I'm getting this lens with my Sony a7 iii and thought I'd just dump it. Didn't even think about it on my 6000.
Thanks for the review. If one already owns the very good 18-105 f.4 for the a6500 can you think of a reason to get this lens, as well? I ask because it is $200 ( +tax) extra if it is bought bundled with the a7iii. I am thinking to just go with the body and not grab the 28-70 as I already have a couple of FE lenses but don't want to regret passing up a potential bargain.Any thoughts about which way to go? Love all your reviews - they have helped me out a lot!
Since you wont be able to use the 18-105 with the A7iii you should consider it. Unless you are planning on picking up the 24-70 F2.8? I think for $200 the lens is a good deal, and use can always get rid of it quickly on eBay/craigslist if you dont end up using it.
Thanks, I was thinking of going for the 28 f2 and the 55 1.8 with the body. I already own the 10 - 18 f4 which can be used as a wide angle on the a7iii and I have the FE 85 1.8 , the 70-200 f.4 and the 90 macro. I was thinking that I could work toward a 24-105 f.4 or the the new Tamron 28-75 2.8 as a later purchase to have an all purpose zoom. It is difficult to decide because I haven't used full frame before.
These are showing up here in Saigon for about $160 USD. I'm going to grab one as soon as I find one with complete box and accessories. At that price, no reason not to have it. I have several camera bodies, and this could come in handy.
I'm fairly new to the camera game, I have chosen Sony a series and have a a6400 and anytime I think i would like some info on anything lens, How to use things you have a video that fits my research need, so thank you very much you have taught me allot
I've had both lenses, the 28-70 FE worked well on my old A7 but was pretty poor on my more demanding A7Rii so was promply sold. The 16-50PZ is sharp in the center but edges are softish at all settings in my experience, but a better lens on the a6000 cameras
Is the Sony FE 28-70 mm F3.5-5.6 OSS 55 mm compatible with the canon a6000 and does it come with a sun hood and is it good both for photo and video?
What would you recommend better this kit lens or the 50mm f1.8?
Is there a significant difference in terms of sharpness between the Sony 18-135mm and the 28-70mm, considering there is almost double the price gap between them?
your wife smile is just perfect
Can you review or suggest some good filters? Especially for the sigma 16mm f1.4
does putting this on a sony a6000 slow down af compared to it on a full frame or will it not make a diffrence?
Is going to be another video or comparison for sigma 16mm f1.4?
What would you like me to compare it to?
It could be sigma 16mm 1.4 vs sony 10-18 or sigma 16mm vs a smartphone like iphone x or pixel 2 xl
TechnologyMafia
Sony 16mm pancake lens. Image quality wise the pancake lens would get pancaked though.
Can you please do 24-70 F2.8 please!!!!!
Sir please make a video on the 7artisans 50mm f/1.1 leica m mount lens with the sony a6500!
yo, can you review the neewer 35mm f1.2?
Hello, I have a question, Is the 16-50mm lens compatible for a full frame sony a7 ii or iii?
I would be interested in a comparison between the Sigma 16mm f1.4 on the alpha 6000 vs the 28-70 on the alpha 7
Is this Lens ... I can using in any tipe of weather?
should i upgrade from 16-50 to 28-70 for a6400?
does af work with this lens on the a6000
Thanks! :)
What wrist strap are you using?
Sony 90mm f2.8 marco FE lens review pls.....
I have the Sony a 6000 and I just purchased the 7ii can I use the lenses? I am from the 6007.II including the kit lens that came with it
I've tried to repair my SELP1650 (thanks to your vid) but the barrel is also dented which avoid it to work. This being said i want to replace it and wonder what you think considering the SELP1650 being so fragile ?
Hello. Thanks for review.I useing 28-70 on my a6300,and i want to upgrade to somethint more sharper and maybe lighter(f4 at least).Would a 18-105 or 18-135 would be a better choice?Maybe u could make a comparison between those three lenses?
P.S.Also,i got some autofocus problems with that lens.
Or maybe i should just get a Tamron 28-75?😁I mostly shooting my dogs in motion.
18-135 great for you
Just buy the 18-135mm f3.5/5.6 and be happy :)
Valid argument! It is a little more expensive though.
Go with the 18 105 F4 for video tough!
I just bought the 28-70 - the reason being - I'm planning to get a full frame in time so that way this will also work later too!
Great review, love the channel. I’d echo a lot of others and would really like to see a review of the Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Can’t decide between that and the 18-135 for my a6500
18 and 28 is quite a difference.
Were some of the sample shots taken in Columbus, Ohio? I feel like I recognize some of the buildings!
Thanks, that help.. so i need to buy 50f18 😆
I have invested quite some money in my a6000, and I don't know if I should start buying Sony full frame mirrorless which is gonna be a better investment in long run.
You dont lose much money on lenses, unless you are buying expensive Zeiss lenses at retail. Buy the lens for your current body, and you can worry about upgrading when you upgrade bodies. Besides, by then new (better) lenses should be out.
Sony fe 28-70mm vs sigma 56mm f1.4 which is best sir for sony alpha a6000 camera
Please compare A7r3 + 28-70 vs A7R3 + 16-50 crop mode or E 16-55 2.8G crop mode :)
I have just bought the 28-70 for my A7ii. I'm not impressed at all and will be selling it asap. The 16-50 on my a6000 looks better imo. Tamron 28-200 will be going on the A7 as well as my dad's old M42 primes.
Hey man! Can you do 28-75 tamron with sony apsc camera? Want to know how it do in apsc body...cause many others just try it on ff body....when this lens actually interesting to use even the focal length really weird
Can u tell me? 18105 sony for videograph only or photographer, who need this lens more?
It is more a video lens than a photography lens.
TechnologyMafia i choice 16-70 at first, but then i looked at your review and the choice is obvious, after that i will take 35 mm sony
Dumb question, so if i set to 28mm on 16-50mm apsc lens on apsc sensor is actually equivalent to 28mm fullframe lens on apsc sensor?
Hi bro!!! Could you please make a video on Sony 55-200mm SAM lens.. though it is an older lense I would like to buy that in my budget... So it could be helpful if you make video on that...
It's very useful for me now, cos I've just buy the A6400 with 16-50 kit and I'm going to buy the 10-18 & 200-600.
Just looking something between these. 18-135 is not my cup of tea and price doesn't worth it. Therefore my choices will be the FE 28-70, FE 24-70, SEL 16-70 or SEL 55-210.
Can you please make a video with couple shoot on A7iii on 28-70 (mostly at 28 to 35 mm) with single off camera flash(like TT685s) with ND filter so that we can get beautiful sky without using HSS. I Have shortlisted this kit (A7iii+28-70,1xX1T-s with TT685s, ND4, ND6, ND8 filters) as starter kit. I already have Nikon D3300 (its shutter life is coming to end). Doesn't have HSS, doesn't focuses well with ND filter.
Does 28-70mm good for music video ????
Pls review Tamron 28-75 for sony e mount
Can sony apsc cameras and full frame cameras share the same lens?
Yes
Hard to go with a 28-70 when you are looking at an alternative to a 16-50mm. But its nice to know its a reasonably good quality lens. I would probably buy one in the 2nd hand market.
Awesome
What we need is a 16-50mm F2.8 !!! :D Good review!
I wish Sony would do it!
I can feel the money loosening from my wallet already... (money flies and attaches to computer screen). This lens looks amazing!
News To Astonish save a couple hundred more and get the 18-105

Unless you're planning on buying a full frame emount body soon and want this lens for both cameras.
Interesting video. Thank you.
Like.
Thanks this was very helpful and I picked one up for my glass collection
i was comparing sample images within this two before i decided to get myself the 1650. just becoz i need a wider angle. While I use the sigma 16mm before, the 1650 is perfect for vloggin due to its size. probly gona get this for my next 'kit lens' kit. ahha
Which one is better : 28-70 mm or 50 mm ?
The 50mm.
Can this be use for my sony a5100? Thanks..its just my first time..😊
Yes, you can use it on your A5100.
@@ArthurR ahhhh😍..thanks
It would be nice to hear about the difference in low light situations since a larger diameter will allow more light in than the 40.5mm a6000.
@technologyMafia
Your video quality and the content are great as always. The presentation is also good. Will I get a SEL 35mm ? :D :D :D
