  • We are so psyched to welcome in Rich Paul on The Old Man and The Three. We get into so much with him so be sure to listen to the full ep tomorrow morning. In this clip, Rich and JJ discuss player empowerment in The NBA and who really holds that power. We published this today because we thought it was especially relevant given the James Harden, Daryl Morey, Philadelphia 76ers story. We also talk about how LeBron James and Stephen Curry are the true power holders.
Subscribe to The Old Man and The Three podcast w/ JJ Redick (ESPN / First Take) and Tommy Alter UA-cam channel today for more NBA analysis, player interviews and highlights.

So you dont think Ego is a problem for Ben Simmons, Harden, Kyrie? You dont think players have less power than they think they have (Harden, Melo, IT)? You think he is wrong about being professional, having the right attitude and playing at a high level give you more power with the owners?

Watched Rich on Gil's Arena and I'm noticing a pattern - he seems to answer questions in such nebulous terms that it leaves you kind of still in the dark . Can't say this clip has brought anymore insight into power dynamics in the NBA.

Yeah he's got that Dame Dash style, kinda. The questions are just a prop for them to talk about whatever they want to talk about...similar to politicians

Took me exactly 15 seconds of listening to him for the first time right now to realize this. It's hard to knock though, he faked it till he made it and this bs way of bsing has clearly led to immense success for himself and his clients. Intelligence in his role is less valuable than savvy talking and being a good salesman. So why change? Why start being genuine now? 😂😂

I don't think any agent is likely to profess that player's hold the balance of power - the owner's will contest and fight back and use it as leverage against that bias. Similarly if he was to suggest the owners / front office are at the wheel, how is he able to hold court? He's admitting to being soft. Asking an agent where the power balance currently lies cannot elicit a profound response because it can only damage their position broadly; I don't think you could expect to hear anything profound from Rich Paul personally, but if his approach is player-centric and sincerely acting as a player's voice you can see why a player would appreciate it..

Hmmm, usually I really enjoy the podcasts and pretty much always find the speakers really interesting/enlightening. I was super excited to see one with Rich Paul, but I have to say, this is probably the first one where I've felt...underwhelmed? Maybe it's just this particular segment of the full podcast, but Rich comes across like he's saying a lot of nothing. It could just be his speaking style, or that he seems to be very carefully picking his words, but it just doesn't feel like a genuine answer.
All he said here was really "most players dont have power, some go for the money and think they have power, Lebron/Steph and maybe a very small handful of others have actual power". I have to say, it would've been interesting to hear him unpack what power in the NBA actually means, or what a player can do with that power? It could've been interesting to hear him talk about power dynamics from owners to coaches to big fish agents to powerful players, etc. This just felt like a bit of a wasted opportunity to have a much more interesting discussion with an extremely unique and valuable voice of the league, but we got a generic answer that anyone could've given. Again, perhaps the full podcast with Rich is more substantial, but man, this one didn't feel like it hit the same bar/standard that these podcasts usually have.

The fans are never mentioned in these conversations.
The fans hold most control and are the most important thing but we never get the respect from teams, players or owners.
It's our money that is keeping this whole thing a float with the subscriptions we pay for and the the tickets we buy and the merchandise we buy and the products of the advertisers we buy.

Only the US public is really engaged and willing to pay a lot of money to watch sacks of meat running after a ball. Basketball is simply not a global sport, Giannis and Luka can move to Spain and play in their league, it will not matter, they will not make even a third of the money. American football even more so, no wonder the NFL was able to keep their players under control for so long. It's a bizarre situation, how the NBA allows the players to be so entitled. Harden is currently trying to break his contract because he thinks he deserves more money... ok, if no one in the NBA picks him up, were he is going to play? China? He can't run away from the US, the money is in the US, the NBA has all the power

So pretty much he just explained why he has structured some players he represents (mainly LeBron) contracts the way he does. He knows other players that his players want to play with and (fingers crossed) if he represents both he leverages their opt outs and ending of contracts to get them to play together

I love how people are blaming young players for feeling entitled before they do anything... Yet it's actually the fans and media that hype these players to no end from the time they are 6 years old. What the hell do you expect when you are already crowning them from the time out of the womb? Rich is actually doing good work in teaching some of these guys that they still need to be professional and perform.

The comments here are crazy. Rich Paul gives an elaborate, measured response and dumbass viewers say he is talking about nothing. Most people want a simple answer, Players or Owners, but the reality is it's more complex than that, and that really the players dont ultimately as a group have that much power, with a few exceptions. That was his answer. Even the players with power have to be professional, play at the top level, and have the right approach - I dont understand how this is not hot air. Seems pretty logical to me.

Giannis used leverage/power saying he wants out if Mil didn’t make changes. And then ended up getting Dame. Harden tried to do it but he ruined his rep after asking for multiple trades. There needs to be value and trust established. Houston Harden had power. It’s to a point now where he’s risking his entire career.

    Question - what is Power?
Answer- the ability to change things in your favor.
There are different types of power. Power by association (like RPs association with lebron),
intimidation power (kg, gp3 forcing you to do stuff),
political power (votes within the players association) ,
    financial power (stars selling seats),
    inspirational power (coach mark jackson),
group power (96 bulls taming rodman),
institutional power (krause destroying the bulls dynasty),
media power (ability to influence the publics mind about a player, coach or club),
legal power (labor vs management) and much more.
