I really like your creative approach to the battle (with the wall and everything!). Other than killing Cazador sufficiently quickly, the "canonical" way to avoid getting Astarion killed by the ascension is to use the "help" action on Astarion while he is locked up. He becomes free from the ritual and can assist in the battle.
and it stops the ritual, there are other "canonical" ways to do that, which I won't spoil for players to figure out themselves
I tried to go that route but for some reason the help action couldn't save him. So I thought I just had to kill everything.
Whimsy, you do know that Astarion is written to be an evil companion! i find it funny that everyone is surprised when he does not approve! 😅
This was such a powerful moment but it wasn't a moment of empowerment. The team did such a great job showing the trauma of an abusive relationship.
I think Astarion's good ending shows that sometimes you need your friends to look out for you and make you realise what you're doing, and that's okay.
47:28 Right there on the wheel, on the opposite side to moonbeam, the icon with a beam and four arrows around it. Using it will move the beam. It is on spell list as well, same icon. With kbm it is kind of much more obvious tho, specific section on the bottom panel for re-casting, moving and so on. With controller, I would be thoroughly confused when playing a caster class at lvl12.
1:00:39 So the other door, you couldn't enter and thought it was a "west door" at first, it opens when click on the button in the other (opposite room) which closes the door behind you. If you leave party member outside of the room that would be closed, you could enter the other room and search there. A bit of puzzle. There are some items there, but nothing major.

1:44:55 That's where combat/encounter and story intertwine, and it is really cool, because he needs Astarion for ascension, so using Help action on Astarion not only free 4th party member, but effectively stops the ritual and the counter (for the same reason Cazador has "ritual sacrifice" conditions). There are other ways, but either more cheeky ones or more of brutal ones, won't say how it works ;). Essentially in here the player supposed to deduce this move of freeing Astarion by examining him, and from how the ritual is tied to any spawn (it doesn't matter in which form Cazador is lol, even a sheep can ascend). But in the end he just slipped on the ice, which makes for a hilarious encounter story lol. And that "stone wall" play was pretty insane btw, very clever.

For RP reasons during evil run, especially if it is Dark Urge run, in my opinion, assisting him with ascension is a cool path to take. It is one of the most sinister scenes and paths in the game. I won't spoil how Astarion changes, but you could guess. It is even more personal if you romanced him. Astarion's story is about survival, he is a survivor, and it is a revenge story as well. In order to survive he wants, from the start, to "control" tadpoles, and when he learns about ritual - to ascend himself. But, if the player shows that all people aren't the same, that he isn't a monster, he slowly but surely would follow the path to his side that he didn't know was there (sort of "to the light"). I know a lot of players say that he is evil, but he inherently isn't, he has that evil shades/sides to him sure, he has done plenty of evil, but it is what he always known and nobody showed him otherwise. It is good that you didn't ask "What do you need?", and passed insight check, and let him do whatever he would do, because you could pretty much guess what he wants and would do. That's why you are important to show him the way and break the cycle of abuse, and that's why "I want to live" plays when he falls on his knees. It is a morally correct choice, at least within RP you are doing.
Again, for RP reasons, performing the ritual and what comes next for the character is pretty cool, and it is within the character just as much as other path, which makes Astarion super-complex character from the writing perspective (truly the best "grey" written character probably in hell knows what how many RPGs). And there are plenty of people who stan this path for him even outside of RP, which is fine as well. All paths for Astarion are kind of within his character, I just think there is a morally correct one from the player's perspective doing a certain type of RP (I rarely think about RPG characters outside of RP anyway).
and i was going to do that on my durge run until i realized a resist durge is infinitely more satisfying and has A LOT in common with astarion
i was going to ascend him until i got that ~scene~ in act 3 and astarion talks to you afterwards and if you pick the topish option (i think it's literally the top, keep in mind i romanced him so idk how it is for anyone else) he goes on about how he was used too and um... yeah i folded and knew i couldn't ascend him anymore LOL
of course i did experience that fun life on my first playthrough with tav by a good old save a reload just to see what would happen and did that romance scene but of course i went back and kept him spawn
both really great scenes for the ritual itself and the romance scenes that are different though
@@nightfrost1891 Resist durge has more in common with Astarion for sure, 100%.
Embracing durge is sort of the "devil" who pushes Astarion to all the vile and horrible things not only Astarion, but durge as well wants. Not in this moment, but throught the course of the game. Agreeing with all the ritual dialogue, agreeing with control the Absolute, and so on.
If you push Astarion and play it right from the start with "lets embrace some powers together" type of manipulation, by the start-middle of act3 he is completely different person and says different things in comparison to the other way of appealing to his other side (that's the beauty of it all, of the game, because the decision in act3 is not the sole point of difference and decision, the whole journey leading to it changes him bit by bit). And within RP of this power-mania ego trip sort of nonsense ascension makes perfect sense, wether you romanced him or not, and within RP it is the sort of giggly-evil slaughter of obviously weaker Gur hunters that seals the deal.
Again, I'm talking strictly RP ;). Embrace Durge, in my opinion, either works as chaotic evil, which I don't like, or manipulative evil reluctantly but surely corrupting everyone around while pretending to be their friend and saying "yes, sure, every advantage we can get" to all their “brilliant” ideas.

He had been born elf, but as punishment for his first attempt, he was turned into a human, both physically and spiritually - and since he couldn't pull the ritual off with a human soul, he experimented with Bhaal's essence to fix himself.
The most amazing thing about Neil's performance in the stabbing part and aftermath is that he nailed it on the first take. The man poured his heart and soul into the role.

Btw Karlach was concentrating on that rock wall the whole time. At any time you can stop concentrating and the wall will disappear regardless of whose turn it is. You also might want to give her a soul coin for big battles like this. It gives her an additional boost.

So Astarion if left on his own devices fully intends to Ascend, he'll ask you to connect your mind to his so he can copy the scars on his back to Cazador and essentially take his place.
He will go through with it and well, even as a "spoilery" comment I think I'd rather let any BG3 player experience what Ascended Astarion is like on their own.
Essentially, the ultimate conclusion of Astarion's companion quest is less about "killing Cazador" and more so about "Saving him from himself" , killing the abuser is not a sufficient outcome for this questline.
But breaking the cycle of abuse altogether before Astarion passes the point of no return.
Of course whatever character you're roleplaying as can affect this decision.
That was a really nasty dagger. One of those that make you bleed out because the wound is a weird shape and very hard to stich.
I was not really an Astarion fan ... but yeah, i couldf feel the fear and frustration then the release after it was all done, the relief of finallly being free to live without having to look over his shoulder all the time... stellar performance, 11/10

Great fight with Cazador, the wall, the dancing queen, the ascended sheep.. very cool.
I didn't enjoy having the choice of letting go or destroying 7000 spawn.. but it was also great to think about what would be ethical, if anything.. or both, I don't know. Similar to genophage in some ways as context is everything.

Cazador was the most difficult fight for me, took me like 5 attempts to finally beat him, the amount of damage he deals is very high and his troops can paralyze with melee attacks, I had to use Dimension Door with 2 people to save Astarion on the first round in order to finally beat this fight without Cazador kicking my ass while Ascending lol.
There’s an option to change the end turn action from pressing triangle to holding triangle. That stopped me from accidentally ending my turn.
You know what, that might be a good idea yeah!
If you think about it releasing the spawns is kind of a non-issue. Astarion showed they can survive on animal blood and he doesn't feed nearly as often as humans do. They could raise whatever and eat that.
7k in the Underdark, I mean there is a unique fauna there, but 7k is like a town of people almost, and all of them aren't prepared for this life, feral, idk. But the choice is still, in my opinion, the morally correct one.

i mean if i did astarion had more impact on me but i romanced him so maybe i'm more biased just like you might be if you romanced her and not astarion
astarion was buried alive for a full year and spend his whole vampire life (200 years) as a slave to cazador so let's not pick and choose who's backstory and quest is more emotional/heartbreaking even if we have our preferences

@@Duskwind_ Astarion was a puppet on a string for 200 years. More than 2 lifetimes of verbal, physical, sexual abuse, torture, being compelled to do sexual acts he didn't want to participate in, and he's been fed putrid rats the whole time.
Getting torn away from your parents, getting your memory erased and being taken in by the cult that had your parents the whole time, serving an evil god is sad, sure. But Astarion and Shadowheart are leagues away from each other based on how chronically traumatic their backstories are.
Yeah, I cheeseballed the HELL out of the Cazador fight. Had my main, a rogue, fire at Cazador with a sneak arrow before retreating back to my team up some stairs then had Shadowheart (bleh) cast wall of spikes. I didn't bring Astarion, because screw that guy, and just let the enemies walk through the spikes toward me.
This was a second attempt as the first one the enemies were actually smart and went up some separate stairs to jump over. Anyway, aside from Astarion being upset I stole his legacy or whatever (cause again; screw the guy who tried to kill me) it was funsies. :)

1:48:46 C'mon Whimsy this is a 100% certified save scumming moment. The game is pretty clear about it, during rage you can't use magic, can't cast nor concentrate on spells. Your game, save scum is fine just take responsibility for you actions🤣
I don't think the game is clear about it at all, I had to find it out by experimenting. This was my last moment of absolutely making sure this was the case, that's what I explained.
Not that there's anything wrong with savescumming in the first place, but I wanted to set the record straight haha

That's certainly clear, but I have no idea where that's written 😂 It's not written in the wheel description, probably in the inspect then? I would have to check. But since I've been raging since the beginning of the game, and never had to concentrate on anything with Karlach until I got Shar's Aegis very late in my playthrough, I had never encountered that problem. So I probably read the inspect at the beginning when I started the game and didn't really understand fully what it meant yet, that would be my guess. Here, instead of reading, I just experimented. There are many ways to learn something in this game, and this is one of them!
@@WhimsyPsyche To read the description of skills you have to inspect them. What you are saying here is fine by me, what I was pointing out is that it's not a game's flaw as stated in the video. The game like everything has its flaws and fault, but this ain't one of them. That's it 👍
