Let's face it, when Sam McKee would call a race you could close your eyes and still see the race, we all miss you Sam and cherish listening to the replays!
Great horse, wonderful gate, a credit to his breed, people that compare horses, from different generations, you trying to massage your EGO, dan patch, greyhound, adios, meadow skipper, albatross, niatross, cam fella, staying together, somebeachsomewhere, bulldog hanover, and many more I missed, enjoy their racing, dont compare, who cares.
I get how people like to compare great racehorses. But you cant. there are too many variables. But we need to remember that those great racehorses from years gone by are all a part of our horses of today. We couldnt be where we are without them. Niatross opened the door to sub 1:50 miles. beautiful horse to watch. big and powerful stride. the Beach, was a freight train. perfect stride, and beautiful to watch also. I am just so happy to have seen them race. :) Perfection in motion!!
The scary part is that at that point in the season he wasnt as sharp as he had been earlier. In the Meadowlands Pace he went in 1:47 in a much rougher trip.
Super sire!! Always look for the great standardbred horses with the cow shit drivers like Paul MacDonell that's what makes a super sire. I keep on thinking what somebeachsomewhere could have done at the red mile that day had Ron Waples senior been the full time driver. I'm guessing 1:45.2
Great race call by the legendary Sam McKee. Who was the best 3 year old pacer ever? I might give Somebeachsomewhere the edge over Niatross and Jenna's Beach Boy, but who knows. It hurt the sport when two of those three didn't race at 4.
jennas bb Not even close, Niatross before, hard clay surface, banked turns, synthetic harness, aerodynamic sulky made of grapite and carbon fiber. I saw Niatross at 18-19 yrs old @Freehold raceway, he looked amazing and his trainer said hes the only horse he knew who would rather race then go to stud. If train down he could probably still do 156 at 18... not taking anything from Somebeach, but if you know harness racing he's not even as good as Blacks a fake..Google him and then respond...over and over again..from two..3 wide. ua-cam.com/video/GnIELYPG6wg/v-deo.html
Remember the offspring of somebeachsomewhere and the fact MacDonell couldn't drive a shit wagon at the time. He was better than Pat Crowe as a driver at the time. The breeding on the dam side of somebeachsomewhere is stellar going back several generations unlike Niatross. I personally know Pat and I was the only person who tried to talk Harvey Madgett out of selling Cam Fella (for 50 thousand Canadian dollars) when he was a two year old. I've yet to see a better bone structure on any horse since Direct Scooter so my nod goes to somebeachsomewhere.
With a real driver he would have paced 1:45 and change as a 3 year old. Too bad they didn't choose Ron Waples senior as the driver instead of that inept MacDonell. Waples at the time was at least 5 lengths better than MacDonell on any horse from claimers to freeforallers.
@Tampaslice I have to agree with you on your comment. There are some cheap 3k claiming thoroughbreds up @ Finger Lakes Race track that can't break a 1:43 mile and it would have been so cool to see Niatross beat a Thoroughbred and it could still be possible if another Niatross type comes into our lives again. Best of luck to you.
And he did that with zero help. All on his own, would have loved to see another horse go out a faster first quarter and half then let paul go to work on the beach. Still amazing and we were fortunate to have witnessed a superb animal like that.
spida817express Not to mention MacDonell couldn't drive a shit wagon at the time. I was a local at both Greenwood and Mohawk for 40 years until Greenwood closed. I also played pinball at Greenwood and at the Orchard Park tavern across the street 'til they both closed. A lot of people just went to Greenwood and the bar across the street to watch me play pinball. I was 6 time world pinball champion.
He was only a 3 year old when he hit that mark??? Wow. I know Cambest has the fastest mile ever clocked but it was a time trial not a race. For a thoroughbred that would be unheard of but standarbreds are such athletes, they can easily hit race times in training.
Great horse, really special. But the immortal Niatross transcended time and I'd have to think he would have ripped SBSW a new one, had they met. Just a reminder, Niatross went 1:49 in 1980 for Gods sake.
will be interested to see what he does as a sire...right now hes the best ever...but if hes a dud as a stud then it wont matter ...i dont think he will be but you never know until the babies hit the track...the most intriguing match up and the potential greatest race horse ever will be the offspring of SBSW and Rainbow Blue
what a phenomenal horse , I've seen some of the greatest pacers of the last 40 years , and Somebeachsomewhere must be considered one of the best pacer of all time .
Wrong..Niatross was..he went in 149.3 when the old record was 1:52 & before carbon fiber Sulky and synthetic harness and souped up cement (Hard Clay)tracks. Two generations ahead of his time.
@DBJKAJ Its so hard to compare horses from different eras. I love niatross and loved his greatness. Comparing Somebeachsomewhere and niatross is like comparing Muhhamd Ali to mike tyson both in there primes.
Would have loved to see him race as a 4 year old. I know he could have went faster as a 4 year old. In this race the driver never hit the horse just pushed him. If he was more aggressive driving him he could have went faster. I would love to see a 4 year old Somebeachsomewhere in a 3 way match race. A 4 year old Somebeachsomewhere VS A 5 year old Always Be Miki and a 4 year old Wiggleitjiggleit. You must consider that this race Somebeachsomewhere is only 3 years old.
MacDonell at the time couldn't drive a shit wagon, that's why somebeachsomewhere was such a super sire. The same with Came Fella Crowe was a terrible driver. I was a local and owned standardbred horses at Greenwood for 40 years to the day it closed.
matthew mauran What they needed to do was put rompin Ronny Waples in the bike for all the drives. Then we'd see if Ronny could crack the 1:45 mark at the red mile.
@TheBlacksAfake No just stop, If somebeachsomewhere kept racing into his 4, 5, and 6 year old years he would have made well over 5 million dollars and probably gone in 1:45:4. Also he doesnt use lasix, so that is totally irrelevant. He lost one fluke race in his life. Greatest pacer ever
jayhoch4 Somebeachsomewhere never had a driver, had Ron Waples senior driven the horse he certainly would have gone sub 1:46. Waples was about 7 lengths better than Mcdonnell at the time so 1:45:2
and who drove somebeachsomewhere every race? Too bad Ron Waples senior wasn't the everyday driver we would have seen 1:45 and change at the red mile. Ronny was at least 5 lengths better than MacDonell (the fuckin' MacDonell) on any horse from claimers to freeforallers.
Let's face it, when Sam McKee would call a race you could close your eyes and still see the race, we all miss you Sam and cherish listening to the replays!
If anything time has only burnished the Beach's Legacy. What a monster. I get goosebumps watching him pace. What a gait. He just was perfect.
Ron Waples senior

Gonna miss seeing his 2 yr qualifying and racing at Poconos . Gurallands..
The scary part is that at that point in the season he wasnt as sharp as he had been earlier. In the Meadowlands Pace he went in 1:47 in a much rougher trip.
It's too bad he didn't race at 4!!!! Sad not to see talent stay on for awhile.
Great horse...Great sire!!!

Greatest pacer Ever, No question about it! If he would have comeback as a 4 year old he would have paced in 1:45 and change!

Paul MacDonell couldn't drive a shitwagon at the time. With a real driver and the lumber laid on him 1:45:4
Like an Off and Pacing horse
@@offandpacing8399 Ron Waples senior could have had a shot at a 1:45:0 mile at the red mile. He would have also raised the stud fees substantially.
GOAT

Considering Niatross ran the times of today 30 years ago. Put him in a race today he'd probably run in the 1:41.3 range.
Niatross had a pig for a dam but out of a good sire ByeBye Bird. Just like Fan Hanover had a pig of a dam Farm Norah but out of Bret Hanover.
"There goes the Beach!"
who knows, we'll have to wait a few years and see. he will definitely get the best mares in the first crop
Great horse, really special. But the immortal Niatross transcended time and I'd have to think he would have ripped SBSW a new one, had they met. Just a reminder, Niatross went 1:49 in 1980 for Gods sake.
Both horses had no driver. No telling how fast Niatross could run with a real driver in the bike.
will be interested to see what he does as a sire...right now hes the best ever...but if hes a dud as a stud then it wont matter ...i dont think he will be but you never know until the babies hit the track...the most intriguing match up and the potential greatest race horse ever will be the offspring of SBSW and Rainbow Blue
... 8 years later the greatest sire since Meadow Skipper.
Vesta Blue has tainted breeding lines on the dam side... Airliner?
Meadow Skipper even sired my back. My back (my real back) by Meadow Skipper.
what a phenomenal horse , I've seen some of the greatest pacers of the last 40 years , and Somebeachsomewhere must be considered one of the best pacer of all time .

best standardbred ever

what a horse!!
To think we he could have run with a proper driver in the sulky. What a horse!
@nickrock23 It is difficult to compare horses of different generations, but nevertheless, I would Niatross the edge.

matthew mauran
Had the master Ron Waples senior drove him he would have gone at least a second faster at the Red Mile.
matthew mauran
What they needed to do was put rompin Ronny Waples in the bike for all the drives. Then we'd see if Ronny could crack the 1:45 mark at the red mile.
Do you really have to be THAT guy?
@TheBlacksAfake No just stop, If somebeachsomewhere kept racing into his 4, 5, and 6 year old years he would have made well over 5 million dollars and probably gone in 1:45:4. Also he doesnt use lasix, so that is totally irrelevant. He lost one fluke race in his life. Greatest pacer ever

Nobody will ever call races like
Jack E lee
he wasnt that great art official beat him

lol he was 3 wide to a 51.4 half in that race and lost by a head. you need to learn horse racing guy
