- The relentless drone war plaguing Ukraine has taken a chilling turn with the emergence of a video allegedly showcasing a massive Shahed drone production facility in Russia. These Iranian-designed, kamikaze drones, also known as Geran-2 in Russia, have become a mainstay of Moscow's aerial assault, inflicting significant damage on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. The leaked footage, grainy and short, offers a glimpse into the heart of this shadowy operation, raising concerns about a potential escalation in drone attacks and the long-term trajectory of the conflict.
A 17-second clip, shared on social media platforms, depicts a scene straight out of an industrial nightmare. Rows of Shahed drone bodies, some standard white and others a stealthy black, dominate the frame. Workers in hardhats move with practiced efficiency, fitting engines and other critical components. The sheer volume is staggering, roughly 100 Shahed drones in various stages of assembly are visible.
This video corroborates earlier suspicions about a massive construction project at Yelabuga, Russia. Satellite imagery hinted at the project's scale, and leaked floorplans fueled speculation about its purpose. Some sources claimed in August 2023 that this very site, or one of similar scale, was being prepped for Shahed drone production, with estimates exceeding 1,600 drones manufactured monthly. How many times to repeat?! The same mistakes again and again from video to video:
1. It is Geran-2 Russian-made drones, not Iranian Shahed drone. Russians bought only blueprints and license from Iran to produce the drones. Iranian-made drones have only inertial navigation system (INS), but Russian-made have the own INS + GLONASS satellite NavSys. The Iranian Shahed drones were only in the first two batches after the documents were signed.
2. Russians do not need Western components for own weapon systems. Russian SatNav GLONASS and INS systems produced from own components for many years already. The Geran-2 has own Russian engines already. It has even a new own turbojet engine already.
3. You should be very careful about Ukrainian numbers, the 90+% of it is just fake!

( there is also the Russian version of this drone with a jet engine that flys at 800 Kmph and is quieter )

Like Russia has all the resources and all the top engineers but somehow Russia needs western components. If Ukraine wants to be a truly independent nation it must be a superpower. It must be so strong that no nation will dare intervene if they decide to adopt policies that might be questioned. The reality is Ukraine is not a superpower. It is in fact very weak and unstable. Yet, it wants to join a military and economic alliance that is way above its pay grade. Take a close good look at Canada and you will start to understand why it is so friendly to its superpower neighbor. Canada is free but Canada is wise not to get on the bad side of its neighbor. Nope, Russia's military doctrine is specific that for producing weapons, etc. must not used foreign components but its own, period. Foreign components are ok for civilian purposes, however due to sanctions Russia is now producing what they used to import further developing its own industry. Is becoming almost completely self sufficient in all fields.

Such damage is more likely from Ukrainian ar-defence missiles which we saw many times before. Arestovich even had to quit because he claimed that it was UA's air-defence that hit residential block not the Russian missile.

Agree, you would figure that Russia's own chip manufacturing capability would have expanded some in two years since everything else related seems to have expanded. Also I wonder if Russia is using drones to take out AAA fire to allow missiles to come through unhindered because the systems are out of missiles taking out the drones. Drones are the saturation attack before the missiles, but if you ignore them, they have the potential to destroy too.

It is not Shahed, It is Geran 2 - modernized Geran. Russian drones are much more technologically advanced and efficient than Iranian ones.

I really don't think Russia has problems with sourcing electronic components for their drones, they have China right next to them that has the capacity to provide all their needs.
The electronics are equivalent to what we had at our RC aircraft club 20 years ago.
Russians have the ability to make that stuff. It's not rocket science. Same for the small jet engines.

It is possible that Iran has a huge stockpile of components needed for Shahed drones, as they always do that before components fall under sanctions.

They are not sahed drones anymore they have significant upgrades over sahed.
Iran may have already supplied the new version Shahed 238, which is very similar (black in color) fitted with electronics and optics that is supposedly capable to target both fixed as well as moving targets. The Shahed 238 is driven by an Iranian Micro Jet engine, which must faster and quieter than the Shahed 136 and much more difficult to discover and hit due to the speed of the Micro Jet engine.
