So good to see you and The Boss again. Here in Martinsburg WV, we are looking forward to getting our seeds started. My dad , who lived in Frederick MD always said to plant in the garden on May 11. You're a real help and inspiration. Much love 💕💕💕💕💕 to the little boss!
I've been growing veg for 60 years and am master gardener certified in two states. These are some of the best tips you'll ever see here in the US. Simple and to the point. Well done Tuck ;).
I have one and she’s not as gentle with the garden as I’d like, deer are more considerate 🤣🤣 my baby girl just needs more time to learn but hopefully she can go from garden pest to garden’s best.. assistant.
I’m a second year gardener. I have been ridiculously encouraged by James videos. I seriously never thought I would be able to do this. I have also suffered depression my entire life. My husband found me some raised beds and I grew 28 8feet tall tomato trees with a unbelievable harvest. I’m not looking back . 2022 was the best summer EVER! I suppose it might be a priceless gift your helping others find. Thank you James P & Tuk . My adult children are 1 years growers. Ty As for 2023 Summer I think it will be a great one.
So good that you started gardening...it also helps me so much when I feel down...when I get out in the yard I feel better...I wish others would know that too....
this is my 2nd year also. i have a tiny yard 20x 30 and was all shade for years. 3 years ago the tree died and its gone, my backyard is sunny. i had no xcuse and had 20 years of leaf compost built up. while the first summer was ok, last winter was the real achievement. with 4 hoops and 20x30 poly i grew and produced chard, beets, carrots continuously. with such a small space i must be careful not to plant too dense, which was my rookie mistake last year. i should be doing the square foot plan rather than just haphazard rows. i am also putting in blueberries and raspberries in the sunny front yard. my biggest mistake was landscaping with boxwoods, dogwoods, arborvitae, and japanese maples and flowers for 30 years rather than growing fruit trees and bushes. yeah, they look nice, but so does a hedge of edibles. incredible how we only think of landscaping with standard trees and bushes and only think of food at the grocery store.
Good to see you and Tuck back in the garden. I'm in the same mode here in zone 7A Virginia. Last week I built and filled two additional 4'x4' raised beds using the same mix ratio. This past Monday I added two different compost with worm casting on all the uncovered raised beds. I have three raised beds with cover crops that I'm trying. I found a lot of grubs when I was checking my raised beds and emptied my grow bags last season, so beneficial nematodes are on the schedule for when things warm up.
Well, that was a whole lot of vital information in one short video. James is at it again! Glad you are safe, well, and doing your thing! I've got some spring garden already germinating. Let's Go!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the reminders of all I need to do to prep my gardens! You and Tuck are awesome!!! I hope all is well with you and yours. 😁 Also glad to see Tuck enjoying his carrots! He’s the best boy! 👑
Great content, I always learn new things. BTW, my husband (totally impressed with your food forest & Tuck) bought me some of your merch this past Christmas and I just want to say I am very impressed by the quality. Well made and so so soft and comfortable! I love getting asked about the “food forest” logo when I wear them out and about. When I tell people it’s a food grower I follow on UA-cam they look at me strangely 🤣🤣 It’s a gardener thing!! Thanks for sharing knowledge✌️
James, thank you so much for sharing your practice journal dates!! I'm in NYC and this is a super helpful reference even though it's 7b and only doing containers here.. It's nice to know that later can sometimes be better. Super excited to try growing new things ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️for Tuck
Spring is almost here to wake everything up. I can't wait to see your food forest flourish in the coming months. Great to see Tucker so happy with his treasure hunts!! LOL Great video!
Hooray to see you once again on UA-cam with a new video! We missed your expert advice and lessons. You are so helpful. I have seeds and seedlings in the spare room in the big Southern Window and planted a few seeds out today as we should be done with freezes here. Still cool but about to warm up here in our Zone 8B mountain and valley desert community. Tuck looks good with his fur cut short. Good little doggie!
I think you're my most inspired and inspiring gardener James. Your passion for your garden is on a whole other level and the productivity you achieve is phenomenal. Your knowledge is remarkable! I hope you and Tuck have a joyful year, thank you for being you and teaching us all about the things you've learned.
Hey james, what do you feel about cinder block raised beds? Had lots of extra ones. I plant marigolds all Around the edges in the openings of the cinder blocks. The marigolds ring the raised bed. Also, Any advice on keeping raccoons , bears, squirrels? from digging up new transplants? It happens every year. Tried ringing plants with dried pepper flakes. Works for a while. It’s something about loose newly loosened dirt they love to dig up! And can’t use fish emulsion! They love digging those up! Also advice on keeping raspberries from squirrels or birds? Fake snakes, nets, fake owls? I live in the country. Lots of critters
James, thank for teaching me how to plant my pear tree with coco core and micoz The tree farm dry rotted my pear tree. It was so sick and the dirt smelled rotten. It actually got its new growth last year.
I am grateful for the tips on weeds. I live in Southern Colorado and we have bindweeds. A gardeners and homeowners worst nightmare. The even grow through cracks and don't need water to grown. An older woman I met a few years ago said she grew up gardening with carpet under her beds. She said it was the only way to keep bindweed out of your beds. I tried it and it seems to work, but after a couple growing seasons, it breaks down and now I have to deal with that. This year I'm putting up a new bed and came to Tuck to see what he sees is the best combo to use to fill the bed, and low and behold I found this tip with cardboard and mulch. I am going to try this under the area of the new bed. Thanks Tuck (& James).
Heading into gardening year five, I am glad I learned the lesson of not starting seeds to early in year three. My seed starting room is in the basement, seeds started to early are bigger and take up more trays. Taking a lot of extra trays up and down stairs to harden them off is a problem I like to avoid to save my old knees.
James, you are so right about starting seeds two weeks later than you normally would, every year I struggle with the plants being too big, and the weather being too cold, and I always refer to my journal from the previous year and I keep scratching out the start date but realistically, I just should add two weeks to the last journal entry start the seeds and then the weather will be warm enough and I won’t have to worry. Thanks for the great videos and hey to Tuck”
I am with you I tell people not to start their seeds too early. Even here in SoCal we’re still too cold to grow a lot of stuff but we’re just starting, happy gardening James 😊
I went back and watched your video showing how to make the hinged hoop house for raised beds and ordered all the supplies. Now I just have to wait for the snow to melt so I can make and attach them. Not going to be for a while though because we're supposed to get another 6" Friday. Thanks for another great video filled with gardening tips and Tuck enjoying a carrot.
A new James video! Spring is truly just around the corner. Got my seedlings under the lights in my basement and a pile of woodchips waiting to be spread. Hope Tuck is feeling well.
Thanks for talking about delayed transplants being potentially better. I waited until the last day of the window to plant my seeds. I probably should have waited longer but was getting harassed by neighbors and the hubby to get it done. Hopefully I won’t have to keep potting up like I did last year lol.
Been following you for a few years now. Just moved into a new house and can't wait to get started. There was already a peach tree on the property which was loaded with peaches but they all died. It's very tall and possibly overgrown. Just pruned it back after watching your peach video. It was hard to cut off all that growth but had to keep telling myself it was the best thing to do. Can't wait to see what I get this year. Thanks for all your videos.
Hi James, enjoy your channel very much, and I’ve learned so much. I grow in zone 5a in eastern Canada, so I’m able to apply many of your tips and techniques. Thanks for all your help, and I really appreciate Tuck’s contribution. Regards, Viola
I wish I could add a picture we just built our second 3x5 wooden railed bed 4 feet tall I did exactly as you pictured, wood, twigs, limbs and leaves for a bottom layer We have a compost pile so added about 20” of that to the top Waiting on a sale of it based soil for the very top I’m so excited for this growing season Ps Hi Tuck❤❤❤
Tip for getting pine raised beds to last longer. If you burn them with a torch or over a fire barrel you turn that outside layer of wood into a very pure form of carbon which is one of the most stable elements in nature and therefor takes an incredibly long time to break down. Think biochar and how long it lasts in your soil same thing with a post or piece of wood that you char.
Love your enthusiasm and practical tips. I’m in Montana, but with a new greenhouse I’m about on your Jersey schedule. The journal idea is really helpful for me because of my unique situation, it’s going to take a few years to figure out what will grow & when. I pretty much have to figure it out for myself.
Great video, thank you as always! You inspired me last year to start my first full garden. I'm also in NJ. Was going to start direct sowing the weekend of 3/17 my sugar snap peas and some greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, cabbage) our weather isnt looking so great right now so thinking i should wait on those like you suggested here?
Thanks for the advice about start dates for your peppers and tomatoes. I also live in NJ and reference the Farmer's Almanac for starting dates. This year, I will take your advice and use the dates you stated. Last year, I started my tomatoes so early (I couldn't wait) that I hated taking care of them because they were so big and it was so hard to find a place for them to live. I will never start them early again.
James what a treasure your lessons are, we are so grateful. We wish you good health, happiness, success & abundance for you & yours. Thank you Tuck for your enthusiasm which runs in the family!
Great tips thanks! This is our first year since we bought our house and been getting the backyard setup! Got some raised beds built and plans for more and a cattle panel hoop for cucumbers and squashes. Can't wait for this Colorado winter to end!
Love your channel. You have the best gardening tips on youtube! I made your planter design and absolutely love it. I used your videos to help prune my peach trees and cant wait to see how things go.
Glad to see you back, James, and Tuck too. We missed you over the winter. God bless you both with a great season, you take such good care of the Garden he gave you and the creatures in it!
As usual, you and Tuck have me ridiculously pumped for the coming year of harvesting some goodies! Love your vids, now let's see if I can stop myself from starting everything too early. My money is actually on me winning that battle this year!
I started my peppers when the almanac said here on Long Island, I went on vacation and the house sitter either over watered or under watered, so I came back and my peppers, cauliflower, celery and others were dead... Glad to know I could still start my peppers today or tomorrow and catch up
New gardener and new subscriber here. Just up the road a ways in CT. Love your videos. Helping me out for sure. Will be starting in new raised beds this year. Square foot method for the most part. I’ll be ordering my Team Grow shirt soon! Keep up the great work. Love your garden area.
I am so glad you mentioned starting seeds 2 weeks later than suggested and the room potting up takes up if you start early. I've been stressing this! People in my zone started a couple weeks ago. I am not starting for another 3 weeks
So much good advice in this video! I have been extra vigilant at keeping a journal this year, thanks to your advice, and I’m trusting it will pay off! ❤️❤️❤️❤️s for the boss!
Great advice! I’m adding 2 weeks to my last frost date and then counting back the weeks. We still have frost/freezes Z5a last frost May 13th and I always end up with a jungle before plant out. I’m no longer trying to beat Mother Nature as she always wins. I don’t like babysitting seedlings any longer than needed nor do I like the anxiety of frost threat and covering everything. I learned planting too early just sets warm weather crops back anyway.
@@jamesprigioni give tuck my love, it’s my second season as a Gardner on the east coast and you guys have made me feel way more confident about this season ☺️
Thanks James I always get something outta your videos! I too am guilty of starting seeds too early, but have a cold frame greenhouse that has a couple of heat lamps and a blower heater that has helped. I'm in zone 5 with snow still on the ground but the greenhouse has raised beds where the soil hasn't been frozen for 2 Mos. My early starts will go in there and if need be will be covered with fabric.
Just subscribed and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your explanations for growing for maximum harvest and for troubleshooting. And, I love Tuck. :)
I'm experiencing this right now. I want to get my cucurbits started but really should wait another week. I already did this with my peppers and tomatoes and didn't start them until 2 weeks later than last year because I wanted smaller plants to deal with when the time to transplant neared. I didn't have issues being root bound in 3.5" x 3.5" x 5" deep pots and the plants did great, but having an 8 week old San Marzano that's 30" tall under a grow light wasn't ideal, especially when hardening off on windy days.

God bless every garden planted this year.
I have 4 Labradors. They stare me down for the "yard snacks" aka carrots, apples, berries, etc. 😂 They are the best garden assistants! ❤

I think i started early last year and i loss some seed..i'll listening you in my next spring. Thanks. And love see Tuck there.
Cheers from South Florida…. It’s too hot down here for us to grow through summers, most of my growing season is your winter
These are excellent tips and thank you so much for taking all that time with the fruit trees and bushes💖💖💖
Thank you so much. I have alot of cush grass on my plot. Now I know how to get rid of it (and make a simple raised bed). Just love Tucker!!!
Great advice! I’m getting excited to start seeds again, but I’m going to wait a couple extra weeks now. That will give me a little more time to plan.
Square foot planting is genius! Thank you for the tip👍🏼
Loved it!!! So relevant no matter where ya live. Tuck is SO CUTE❣️
Beautiful as always Tucker🤍🤎🤎🤍🤎🖤 Growing season is upon us and you will receive a bountiful amount of goodies🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🤎🤍🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Just subscribed and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your explanations for growing for maximum harvest and for troubleshooting. And, I love Tuck. :)
James try shou sugi method charing the wood with a torch it is supposed to make it last longer and it would be beneficial towards the soil as well
Thank you James. You have a wealth of information and I appreciate everything you're teaching. I'm down here in Florida.
i like the Gardening channel.for me it's very inspiring in gardening, especially when the harvest comes it feels like i'm also harvesting
Let’s Go! Looking forward to your uploads! I’m sure Tuck is looking forward to some more Spring carrots soon 🥕
Wow! So many great tips in one short video! Thank you!
