I love that Olga has put in the time and effort to operate in this world and rather than letting the achievement feed her ego she is still connected to those experiences of confusion and wants to help prevent others from experiencing that too.
I love that there is, ever so slowly, movements being made towards more philanthropic endeavours. The fact that people want to have a positive impact on their communities is really lovely. It might be a slow process but it is happening!
I struggle with life admin tasks... I can't even begin to imagine what it would have been like in a new country and knowing very little of the ways! What a brilliant woman Olga is
I've always felt that the jargon of any particular industry is purposefully designed to make those who don't know it feel left out or like they aren't good enough
I love this idea Olga! It makes a lot of sense and would benefit so many people. Sadly it's hard not to feel like the world doesn't want to help and benefit as many people as possible, so I don't see this ever happening
I can't imagine how difficult of a transition that would have been Olga but you seem to have gotten through it amazingly! Your family must be so proud.
It should be universally understood and we as citizens should feel like we have the power and trust in a system that is meant to support us to do the best we can.
I remember wanting to learn sign language because I thought that was our "universal" language, and feeling very clever/pleased with myself as I went off to learn. Then I discovered even SIGN language is different from country to country - not only that but here in AUS it differs from STATE TO STATE!! So yes, Olga I'm all for implementing something we can all understand, not just for law but for literally everything. Bring it on.
Oh gosh what survivors and incredible tenacity despite not knowing it at the time! What a raw story Olga speaks of and the lessons she has taken on and risen from!
Very moving, Olga. What a reason to go to law school! Simplicity does indeed make it better for all parties. I can confirm that the Doha airport is awesome, lived in Qatar.
Olga I can definitely relate to being able to understand every word and still not knowing what it all means!! Such a disheartening part of learning a new language and something all those language learning apps get wrong.
Ooft how much can you relate to the part about understanding every word but not what those words mean as a whole? One of my biggest challenges when I tried to learn a new language.
We all understand images regardless of our native language, age, gender or if we're hearing impaired. Could we communicate in pictures without a smart phone or tablet? Not yet but sometime soon.
Totally blown away that she studied law in a language that wasn't her first. Congratulation Olga. Many have failed where you succeeded.
Olga is definitely an idealist and that's really beautiful for a lawyer.
Pictures are the universal language and using them in legal contracts or documents would make life SO much easier for everyone!
I love that Olga has put in the time and effort to operate in this world and rather than letting the achievement feed her ego she is still connected to those experiences of confusion and wants to help prevent others from experiencing that too.
I've seen another one of Olgas talks and it's so beautiful how much she genuinely wants to help people and have these systems benefit them.

Lol same! I'm over here like how can someone be this brilliant?
I've always felt that the jargon of any particular industry is purposefully designed to make those who don't know it feel left out or like they aren't good enough

What a wonderful picture Olga conjured for me about ordering food from a menu in a strange language!
I can't imagine how difficult of a transition that would have been Olga but you seem to have gotten through it amazingly! Your family must be so proud.
Way to go Olga. You are amazing. Keep slaying. Queen.
It should be universally understood and we as citizens should feel like we have the power and trust in a system that is meant to support us to do the best we can.
Olga, you are doing such a service to us silly humans. Thank you!!!

Congratulations on your talk on the language of law
Oh gosh what survivors and incredible tenacity despite not knowing it at the time! What a raw story Olga speaks of and the lessons she has taken on and risen from!
Amazing insights and presentation
Loved the story about making comics for migrant farmers in South Africa so they could understand a complex employment agreement.
Very moving, Olga. What a reason to go to law school! Simplicity does indeed make it better for all parties. I can confirm that the Doha airport is awesome, lived in Qatar.
I'm so looking forward to a universal language for all things. Would make things so much easier, especially when travelling.
Wisdom at it's finest - thank you for sharing!
Olga I can definitely relate to being able to understand every word and still not knowing what it all means!! Such a disheartening part of learning a new language and something all those language learning apps get wrong.
I have so much respect for you Olga, takes a lot of dedication to study law - especially if you're learning in your second language
What an inspiration this woman is!
Wow I had no idea about how much of our learning is visual but it makes a lot of sense!
Another TED talk hitting the mark. Thanks Olga.
So interesting Olga. Thanks for sharing your story.
What an amazing journey and story. Congrats on learning legalize Olga!
Wonderful talk Olga, you are so eloquent and funny, even in a second language!
Love this concept, Olga! We are such visual learners - love the idea of breaking contracts into visuals.
Count me in "on a journey of fun with law". I'm sure most people would agree.
well she's an absolute gem
Kudos to the person who turned workers agreements into comics in South Africa [10;29] Simple efficient and effective.
Just had to come back and say since watching this talk I've tried to start reading the user agreements when I download new apps!
I had to laugh when she described ordering from the menu and not knowing what would appear. Can so relate.
I look forward to the day laws are universal, as well as how they're communicated
This was a great talk!! And so inspiring.
This is so amazing congrats!
It's interesting to think of the way things evolve - I sometimes feel law was developed with the intention of confusing everyone
The power of an image that masked emoji is understood around the world.
shows how much things have changed over the last couple years
I think this could be applied to all kinds of things and it would help a lot
Hahaha I love the little emoji exchange re: robbing a bank. Definitely got the meaning across
Ooft how much can you relate to the part about understanding every word but not what those words mean as a whole? One of my biggest challenges when I tried to learn a new language.
Using emojis to communicate to someone not to rob a bank very convincing. So visuals are the winners over words certainly in this case.
Someone needs to invent an app that sifts through legal jargon and helps every day people understand
I would pay good money for that!
Why is this not already a thing?
I can't imagine the frustration of those early experiences Olga describes.
Guess that just speaks to your privilege 🤷🏻♂
One of the reasons why lawyers charge so much, takes years to learn their jargon.
Awesome talk Olga, now how do we go about actually make it happen?
Olga we can all relate to not understanding legalese - it's double Dutch!!
Loved the story of becoming a lawyer so you could understand legalese.
I love how everyone knows that 'jargon' actually means 'over complicated language designed to make people outside of that industry feel stoopid'
yup. there are similar things in so many fields
Damn that's a lot of responsibility to put to put on a teenager. Reminds me of a girl I went to high school with who had to grow up way too fast.
Yes, sometimes I think they make it difficult intentionally because they want to confuse us into complacency
But why would people who have spent 5+ years of their life studying this want to make it easier for those of us who haven't?
believe it or not, some people are driven by equity and education for all :)
@@buzzboxes yeah and a lot of people are not.
Man it would make things so much easier if all those addendums and privacy agreements were explained with pictures and emojis haha 😅😅

first
I think the images of faces covered by masks are understood by everyone on the planet, regardless of age or gender
yes, I think so! 😷
