Hello I was wondering if you could help? I'm 18 years old. on the 31st of October 2014 I cut my tendon carving a pumpkin and had the repair the following monday. After about 2 weeks out of cast (so around 8 weeks post op) my finger curled and wouldn't straighten so I had the tenyosis surgery, after 4 weeks post op my finger hooked again so my physio straightened it herself manually and put my finger in a plaster of Paris cast to keep it straight for about 6 months. about 2 weeks after they took the cast off i woke up with a tingling feeling and chronic pain I have been referred to chronic pain management but they didn't know what's going on with my finger so they did a nerve block but that only lasted for around 2 hours. I have been on Co codamol 30/500, gabapentin and amitriptyline for the last 9 months but it hasn't got any better. They are now really considering amputation but I would like to see if they could do something else? thank you.
How did it turn out? When I had my surgery done, they drilled a hole through my finger nail and had a suture through it to keep the tendon pulled up. I am very sorry to hear about your finger. That sounds very bad.
You were in the cast too long. It sounds like you developed RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy) or now it's called CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome). You should try to see an Occupational Therapist that specializes in hand therapy to start a program of desensitization and normal use of the hand. I worked with a patient who had multiple carpal tunnel surgeries and like you, was stuck in a cast for 6 months. When her cast came off, she was in agony and pain and couldn't even stand the feel of fabric or the wind blowing on her arm. She didn't even want to leave the house. We started on a desensitization program and she was in my clinic for several weeks. Good news was that she recovered, and was able to use her affected dominant R hand/arm again normally. Hope this reply finds you in a better condition than you were 3 years ago.
