Thanks for this reaction! You did great man. Yeah I've been clean from a hard drug for 21 years. It was the hardest thing I've done for myself, to quit cold turkey. I am thankful I made it through and never relapsed. Very thankful. I have also watched some very close to me fight their addictions and lose. Lost my brother in 2012 to pain pill addiction, which started with prescriptions from a doctor for his back when he broke it in a car accident. That addiction grew to the point it killed his sweet heart. I lost my sister in law last year from alcoholism, it finally took her May 2023, the abuse her body went through couldn't take any more. Prayers for all fighting their demons and prayers for those watching loved ones fighting their addictions. Something you said about drug addiction not being a disease is right. For myself i made that choice to take that drug i was addicted to. One time and i was hooked. Cant explain it but anyways every addict chooses when they start by taking it the first time.....hard to say that about my brother though, doctors gave him the drugs for pain.
Calling it a disease doesn't excuse anything... we still hope if not, expect our friends and family members who suffer from cancer or any other disease to see Dr's, get treatment, and do what they can to get better .... the difference being we give understanding when not every day is a good day, we stick by them, support them, hold their hair when their sick, a cold cloth on their forehead when fevered... if we showed that same level of support; not this whole enabling it and excusing everything bs that's been happening more and more (and as a Canadian believe me I'm all too aware of how incredibly dangerous so called safe sites and supply truly are) but if we showed the same support and consistency towards actually getting better.... the lives we'd safe... the memories we'd gain... the pain we'd alleviate... would be everything Much love and mad respect to all those who haven't given up... hope, strength and love to those still trying to try❤️❤️ Please stay!! Hey there first time viewer brought by the algorithm. I am sharing this whenever this question of disease or choice comes up. I work in mental health and substance abuse so I can speak a bit to this conversation. Typically addictive behavior (substance or otherwise) is preceded by underlying mental health issues. Thus it is a symptom of the problem. It’s a negative coping mechanism. Yes (unless you were prescribed medication) the first use is a choice but for some it provided so much relief in the moment they couldn’t put it down. After regular abuse (sometimes once and forever with meth) the brain is altered and it takes years to regenerate the serotonin receptors so that an addicted person can even return to baseline. I kind of compare it to type two diabetes. It is most usually caused by very poor, eating/lifestyle habits. That was a choice, but caused long-term physiological issues that had to be dealt with as a disease model.
Stop smoking pot. Love your reactions but as a recovering addict you seem pretty hypocritical. If you don’t understand the disease model and why addiction is considered a disease maybe you shouldn’t speak on it. Maybe do some research. Literally a different chemical reaction in certain people’s brains. Honestly much love bro, but do some research.
I appreciate the comment @joshbain. First, It's a bold thing to tell another grown man to stop doing a legal activity simply because you don't care for it. Secondly, what is hypocritical about anything I said or am doing? Thirdly, I am not voicing some unheard opinion about addiction. Yes, I am aware of what the AMA states. That doesn't end the discussion. Have you, for instance, read any dissenting opinions such as neuroscientist Marc Lewis' work? Yes, repeated use of drugs and alcohol causes actual measurable changes in the brain, but the discussion certainly continues in science and psychology as as to the root cause of the initial choices. There's nothing wrong with having a discussion and with further studies in the matter. I think I was pretty respectful in what I said in the video. Why assume that I have never researched something that has had such a profound impact on my life?

Ive been clean 12 days today but i feel like my addiction started when i was prescribed adderall my Freshman year..
