    Hi S-man: My dad was a master mechanic back here in Massachusetts. Needless to say everything I know about cars is attributable to him - and guys like you. He's gone now and I can't begin to tell you how often I wish he was around to help me out - particularly with the 08 Forenza TRSensor. After watching your video I'm about to tackle this baby by myself. He'd have wanted it that way. Follow the steps and it looks pretty reasonable to complete - thank goodness Suzuki is out of business now. My dad would have been happy to know that as well. Thanks again.

    Excellent help and will be installing this neutral safety switch myself after purchasing the part and the tool. Heads up your link is no longer valid (well it is a few years old) but if you enter the part number seen on the tool with "suzuki" first, it will come up on search with Freedom Racing. QUESTION: My 2006 Forenza has never been free of airbag light issues on the dash since the car was purchased new. When under warranty, the dealer constantly checked the pin connections and replaced the harness twice, along with the passenger sensor where the seat foam was a service bulletin. When the warranty was over and the dealers eventually went away with Suzuki being sold in America, there's the main airbag light again which is maddening at only 70k mileage. If you have any ideas here, it would be greatly appreciated! This youtube is a few years old, but seeing recent comments being answered gives me assurance you're still reviewing comments. Thanks again for the great detailed replacement vid here!

      Thanks for the heads up on the bad link. In fact, all of them are invalid except for the suzuki forum. I've removed the invalid links from the description. As for the tool, you may have a hard time finding it and even back then it was $85. I wouldn't even bother finding it and even if you could, it would probably be even more money. As I mentioned in the video, put the bolts of the transmission range sensor in the center of the slots. That should be close enough for the adjustment of the sensor. That's where the bolts were went I used the tool. I remember people having an issue with the passenger air bag sensor. And it seems from doing a search that there isn't a definitive answer to this issue even today. I never experienced this issue, but if I had, I would have diagnosed this issue and posted a video.
      You are correct that the dealerships dried up in North America and parts were getting difficult to find. And that is the reason that I got rid of this car years ago. Good luck on your repair Eric and hope you have a great day!

    Can you believe the transmission rage sensor is bad again (replaced it in 2006). Ordered another one (was $2.74 more than last time). This will be the third time replacing this switch.The dealer replaced it in 2008 under warranty), me in 2016 and now. Maybe I should have ordered a few of them (LOL). Glad you still have this video up. Thanks.

    Just wanted to say thank you for making me look intelligent when fixing my daughter's forenza. After watching your videos on the timing belt (which ended up being head rebuild), I was able to get her car running again. Then while delivering the car I noticed that the trans had the rough clunk into gear and stuck in high gear. Naturally I looked on your channel to see if you had addressed this issue. So relieved to come across your detailed videos! Thanks again and keep up the great tutorials.

    The only thing i'd like to say is that when i put the new range sensor it took a lot of effort to insert. It takes a lot of patience, you gotta do a lot of small movements to put it right. It also works on the chevrolet Optra, its called pare-neutro here in Venezuela

    Thanks for this series. I will be working on this sensor for my Forenza wagon this weekend. I acquired a replacement sensor via Amazon for low cost. I am going to do this without the alignment tool. As you know, the tool is costly, so thanks for that extra hint about the slots lining up in the middle. The reason that I am replacing the sensor has to do with ignition of the engine. As you know, this sensor includes a feature that only permits ignition when the PARK or NEUTRAL position is detected. (A ridiculous feature in my view, but probably serves some purpose). Occasionally, my engine won't start if this detection is confused. I can usually workaround it by turning the key to ON where I can move the position selector through all the positions (with brake engaged) and back to PARK. That always works. However, recently I have also noticed a few other related issues. I can hear that clunk noise when changing positions. Also, while driving at low speeds, I notice the gear shifting slips a little or does not catch quite right, a little sluggish I suppose. So this all seems to point to this range sensor. Wish me luck.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 років тому

      +Eric Thomas Yep, sounds like your range sensor Eric. You've probably got a check engine light to come on with the code P0705. Also, your display for the gear selection should show a diagonal line when the problem occurs. Good luck on getting it done.

    First off, thanks for posting this video. I have a 2007 Forenza and had to first replace the transmission range sensor in 2010 @ 30k miles. It's gone bad again and I think I can replace it myself after watching your video but yesterday, after I bought the part the dealer noted that "with the vehicle in park turn inner splines all the way to the right before installing". Your instructions are pretty straight forward, it's the dealer note that kinda confused me.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  10 років тому

      Hi Georgette. When you buy the range sensor, the splines com preset to the neutral position. You can turn the splines to align up with the park position and it will work. The service manual shows the range sensor installed with the gear selector in the neutral position. Either method will work though.

    OK I just replaced this sensor on my daughters car last night. Lining up the flat spots on the spline and sensor was a bit of a sum-bitch! Haha! I replaced it with out the alignment tool. What I did was place a small piece of flat bar square off the alignment tab before I removed the old sensor and made a mark with a sharpie. Repeated the process to align the new sensor. Worked great and the P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1 lined up perfectly the first time. I can't thank you enough for this video. I don't think I could have done it with out it.

    Thank you so much for posting this video! I wanted to learn to work on my car on my own so your detailed instructions were very helpful. I replaced my sensor today on my 2007 Suzuki Reno, followed the instructions mostly to a T, although I had some trouble with getting the new sensor on with the switch in the neutral position. I noticed that my new sensor and my old sensor had the flat spot in two different places. I was also replacing my radiator, which I feel went pretty smoothly. However I tried to crank the car once everything was done and nothing happened? My headlights, AC, and radio all worked, however I couldn't even get a click, let alone get it to turn over. I also notice that when I tried switching gears it didn't seem to register being in park, but other than slipping up once or twice it seemed to register every other gear fine. I hope it's not a bother for me to ask what I could have done wrong. I would hate to have to spend unnecessary money taking it to a mechanic.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 років тому

      +tylsforthescars Since the car started before the installation of the tranny switch, you probably don't have it adjusted correctly. There is also a neutral safety switch inside the range sensor which only allows the car to start in Park or Neutral. So, I would relook over the adjustment of it to be sure that it's correct.

    You're welcomed. There isn't a PCV valve on the Forenza. It is nothing more than a calibrated orifice inside the valve cover. To check for vacuum leaks, you could use propane while the car is running, carburetor spray (be very careful, flammable) or the best is a smoke machine. Do search on UA-cam for finding vacuum leaks.

    Very good video and thorough. I recently replaced the transmission range sensor as shown in the video on my 06 suzuki. I had an engine light and the car didnt have any power. Scan the car and came out to be a bad faulty transmission range sensor, however, after i replaced it, few days later the car wouldnt start on park. Starts in neutral but other times it does starts on park. It only happens sometimes. Never had this problem. Any suggestions on what went wrong. I will appreciate any feedback. No engine codes or anything now. Seems that one problem got fixed but now another problem came out.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  2 роки тому

      The most likely cause is that the sensor is a little bit out of adjustment. Just be sure that the mounting bolts for the range sensor are in the center of its slots. That should be close enough for an adjustment.

    I like the video. Very detailed and very informative. I have a 2007 Suzuki Forenza, when on drive from stop to acceleration the transmission kicks in late, about 2000 rpms. Codes P0700 P0783 P0734 P0722 come out on the scanner. What to do?

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  5 років тому

      You've got several codes there Gregorio, but the one that would interest me the most and what I would focus on is the P0722. This is saying that the TCM is not receiving a signal from the output speed sensor. This should be a two wire sensor generating an AC voltage. When you don't have this signal, then you could get those other codes also. If you don't have the service information, wiring diagrams or other pertinent information I would let a mechanic do the work. If you do have the information and equipment for electrical diagnostics, focus on this sensor first. Good luck with your repair!

    Hello Stuzman - Very grateful for your videos. They were VERY helpful when I replaced the head gasket in my 07 Reno. Here's my question: My backup lights are not working. The range sensor indicates all gear positions properly on the dash cluster. I confirmed that the bulbs are good and there is no voltage to the sockets when in reverse. The online manual is a little confusing. Are the backup lights controlled through range indicator switch? About a month ago, I noticed difficulty going into reverse. I ran it through all the gears and problem went away. But from that point until today, I have no backup lights. The car has 146,000 miles.

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  4 роки тому

      Hey Scott! Looking over the wiring diagram, the backup lights runs through a separate switch inside the transmission range sensor. The two pins of concern are inside the sensor which are pin 7 which should be a pink wire and pin 8 which should be a light green wire. Pin 7 comes from a fuse, (F20 - 10A) which you may want to check first. The wire on pin 8 runs out to the lights. There are a few connectors that runs in this circuit, but I would check the fuse first and then with a test light, be sure that you have voltage to pin 7 and with the tranny in reverse, you should have voltage on pin 8 of the range sensor. Good luck on the troubleshooting!

      @@stuzman52 Hey Terry - Thanks for your help. I bought the new range sensor switch and replaced it today. Back-up lights are working again and the range sensor is fine. I'd like to take a minute to say that I believe these cars have gotten a bum rap. I believe so many of them went to the junk yard because of the DexCool coolant they came with from the factory. The coolant didn't protect the head from corrosion and they often blew the head gasket. I knew the oil had been changed faithfully in my car and it NEVER burned a drop of oil between changes. So when the head gasket blew, I milled the head and put on a new gasket. That gasket only lasted 34,000 miles. This time, the corrosion was too deep to mill the head. Since I knew the lower half of the engine was good...I bought a brand new cylinder head and flushed out all the old DexCool before installing the new head. I put conventional (glycol) coolant in it...and the car has not missed a beat in 50+K miles. (it now has 165,000 miles...not 146K as previously noted) These are good motors but were cursed by that crappy coolant. Their other weakness was the EGR. It was prone to leaking. However, these are just another version of GM's Ecotech engine. It has a cast iron block. So, if folks take care of them, keep the oil changed and put the right coolant in them...they can remain long-lasting cars. So...all of this is just to say thanks for providing so much valuable information for these orphaned cars. Keep up the good work!!

      Hi David... I don't have the car anymore as I sold it about 3 years ago. But changing a radiator is a pretty easy job. Drain the coolant with the petcock on the radiator. If I remember, you have cooling fans on this car, so remove them at usually two bolts at the top for the radiator. Look it over and you should be able to see what's needed to get it out.

      Yes, the tool is pretty expensive. Now it runs about $127 which in my opinion is way overpriced. In this video, I mentioned that with the tool the top bolt for the sensor was right in the middle of its slot. In other words, move the sensor so that top slot is right in the middle where the bolt goes. That should be close enough for the adjustment. Good luck on your repair.

      Yes, it's sometimes referred to that also. If you remember from one of the videos, four switches are for the transmission, another switch is for the neutral safety switch and there is another switch for the backup lights. So, there's a total of six switches inside.

      Glad to hear Juan that the video was helpful. You're probably talking about the brake switch. If the switch is good, then it's no need to replace this switch. i watch your video and I have to replace the TRS. It too is an 06 suzuki. I know you no longer have the car, but i thought maybe you can give me a little advice. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, and although this seems like a very simple fix, I am having a problem with it. I purchased a new sensor and when i tried to install it, it did not align exactly with the flat spot, therefore it rounded out the rubber spline. I tried to put the old one on, and i did the same thing. I just purchased another one and before I try again I was wondering if there is anything you can tell me to help me to align the TRS on properly(flat spot). Again, this doesn't seem difficult at all, but I would like to get it right so I dont have to buy a third one. Thanks..

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 років тому

      +Vincent Gulisano Shouldn't be that hard Vincent. If I remember from this video of where I install it, I believe that the gear shift selector is in neutral. The reason is because the flat spot on the range sensor would been in this position when you buy the sensor. Hopefully, my memory is correct about that. It may be a little snug sliding on the splines of the input shaft, but that's normal. Make sure that the flat spot lines up with the flat spot on the shaft. Just take your time when installing and don't rush the job.

      Since shop prices vary widely across the world, your best bet is to give the shop that you're interested in a call. These range sensors are a problem, but you should get a couple of years out of them. And driving the car with a bad sensor will have high line pressure on the transmission. Also, you will be starting out in 3rd gear instead of 1st which puts a lot more load on your engine. I would get it fixed as soon as possible.

    Dear Sr (Stuzman52) This is a very good video, it is worth it to watch it. I changed (the mechanic did) this switch, but now I am wondering if they did it correctly, I doubt it. Anyway. I got another code and the mechanic ( A new one) told me that I need to change the transmission control module (TCM) since there is a issue with the communication. Unfortunately, I do not have the exact code that came up. what is this TCM.
    I changed this switch because the former mechanic told me that there was a miscommunication with the computer. but now, another mechanic told me that the miscommunication is still giving problems ad now he recommends me to buy a new TCM

    • @stuzman52
      @stuzman52  8 років тому

      Usually Julio you'll get a P0705 for the tranny range sensor. The mechanic is going to need a dedicated scanner to communicate with the TCM. But I assume that both of them has the proper tools. TCM stands for transmission control module. It's a computer located under the left hand side of the dash. If you watch the earlier videos, I did all of my testing at this module. The module is responsible for receiving all inputs for the transmission and controls the solenoids inside the transmission. I can't say that you need the module or not as I'm not there to diagnose it. Sorry Julio....
