The midi track is what triggering the envelope that is why there is melody, it was done by someone in midi version it’s not that vocoder knows how to find this in rap. That is not how vocoder works. It only plays the notes that are played on keyboard or in midi map.

how it seems from my experiments, vocoder is multiple bands on the equalizer (e.g. eq of shape /\/\/\/\ for 4 bands - for example sub, low, mid, high), each one being amplitude modulated (so each bands volume in carrier (original sound) matches volume of such a band in mod (2nd sound that tells how loud should each band be, i think usually synth is carrier and mod is vocals that are to be made sounding like that synth, but for this experiment the carrier and mod are the same, so in an ideal setup (i think that would be a whole single band as wide as the whole spectrum) it should do nothing)), with more bands you can get closer to covering the whole frequency spectrum, but, inevitably, the more bands, the narrower they are, and the narrower each band, the less capable it is of producing a clean sound, each frequency gets kind of blurred into sinewaves they represent with worse response, and thats what gives vocoder its distinct sound
