In my opinion, Thai series are the most advanced and open in terms of concept and ideas in SEA. They tackle real life stories and fantasies that are often taboo in the conservative ASEAN territory. BL's are norm and now a Bi-Polyamorous themed series, so something to look forward to. They are Japan's counterpart sans the technology, but still very liberal. They are decades ahead really. The only country next to them in the region would be the Philippines but, still a long way to go. No high school BL with kissing and bed scene will ever be shown in the Philippines to date yet, and it will still take time for it to arrive. They are just in the level of KDramas whose theme are more of adultery, mistresses and some topics of bi and gay stories but very subtle. Usually lgbt actors there are comedians and entertainers. Not hailed as serious actors and actresses. Lets not talk about the rest of ASEAN as we all know religion and culture plays a big part of it, out of respect.
PH once did a BL series titled 'My Husband's Lover' but that was about it. They are open to other social issues but because love intense drama such as Ika-6 na utos, it's more focused on that. Though, I do commend a certain TV station for being more open to the concept of the discriminated. We all know what the real reason why it's still closed off from BL series. =_=
Philippines doesnt do series yet but they have a lot of movies with lgbt in it. Both comedic and drama ones. Most popular would be Rainbow's Sunshine? from what I remember.
And now there starting to fall in line with the thai,they give now a beautiful (I don't know if it's a movie or a series) title's MGA BATANG POZ which give a meaningful lesson not only to those who have HIV/AIDS ,but also to us to become aware of.
i agree thailand has a lot of drama series with lgbt+ content, which is great, although 99% of it centers around cis gay men and sometimes leans a lot towards "BL catered to straight women". my problem is that they don't cast actual (openly) queer actors for these roles, though, unless it's a stereotypical comic relief side character. also some of the dramas -- much like japanese "bl" movies -- feature scenes with no or extremely dubious consent between guys who then end up together, which i personally find uncomfortable and harmful. also there are hardly ever any f/f couples. i know i can't expect all these changes to happen quickly or anything, but i just wanted to point out these issues. but yes i agree that in certain aspects thailand is ahead of other south east asian countries.
