Lexmas is easily one of the best episodes of the entire series. Lex embraces the dark side. He knows he is the villain of the story. Great story throughout. Great performances. Few episodes are a 3-rose episode. Some are close. But this is a 3-roses for me.

Lexmas is one of the best episodes of Smallville ever … I would personally give it 3 roses 🌹 🌹 🌹 no questions asked !!!! I loved how Lex felt so lost and awkward all the time!!! The best scene for me is when he sits in the family car and feels so uncomfortable!! And when he struggles with the baby seat. I bet you two had fun with this episode!!! And then is so sad when he comes back to reality and he realizes he’ll never have that dream come true . I absolutely loooooved this episode!!! Keep up the good work!!! I send my best regards from Mexico 🇲🇽 !!!
I think that the point of bringing Santa into it is that Superman is an inspiration to everyone, including the person who is a symbol of hope to everyone else.
Lexmas hands down is my favorite episode of Smallville. There's so many great things that made the show such a phenomenon, but I think the number one factor was the unique perspective of Clark and Lex's friendship early on. Even though this episode was a "Christmas Special", it really felt like one of the defining turning points in the series. Both heartwarming and truly devasting all at the same time. This episode truly made me mourn for Lex. It sticks with me all these years later.
One of the most iconic Smallville episodes. The one that changes Lex's trajectory for good (or for evil). For me the dream was Lex using the projections of his mother and his father to convince himself that power and money should be his main priority. Lilian was his good side trying in vain to convince him why he should choose love, while Lionel was his evil side telling him what will happen if he does. Really great writing. In the real world, it's sad seeing the Kents so happy, knowing what's going to happen in the coming weeks. Clark playing Santa was Tom at his comedic best and his chemistry with Chloe once again outshines his chemistry with Lana (IMO). And yes, Allison looked gorgeous once again in Season 5. Lastly, John Glover was once again terrific. Love how season 5 is bringing him back in the forefront again.
@@KingKidGoku32794 Yep. Michael especially. My point about Glover is that he was wasted for the entirety of season 4, so seeing him do more stuff and have more scenes with Michael in season 5 was one of the definite improvements they did in S5.
This episode for me is in the top 1. When the decisive moment arrives and everything points to the most common and cliché direction, it takes a turn in another direction with no return for the great Lex, reinterpreting all morals and ethics as Nietzsche said, beautiful episode
I think Season 8 onward where Michael wont be in the episodes on Smallville, that maybe Erica Durance Cassidy Freeman or Justin Hartley should join Tom and Michael on the rewatch at that point
This and the one where Clark wakes up in the insane asylum are my two favourite episodes in the series. It doesn't get better than this. The episode OF COURSE gets 3 roses. Absolutely formidable.
Lexmas is the best episode of the whole series!!! I remember I felt in my own skin all the emotions: excitement, fear, sadness and anxiety of Lex of finally having it all, lose everything and want to prevent the whole situation, even if the price to pay was himself 🥹. Michael Rosembaum's acting was perfection here👏👏👏
I usually listen to the podcast at work on Wednesdays, 5 am, but I saved this one for afternoon so I could SEE the guys’ reactions. Did not disappoint. Thanks for the ep, y’all rock.
This is how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader in Star Wars. He dreamed about his wife Padme dying, and this was the turning point of him turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader.
Ugh. I always dread getting closer to the last John Kent episode. The show really changes after that. Not in a bad way, but it’s an end of an era. The episode where Clark gets his dad’s watch back always broke me at the end. Can’t wait for that one.
My brother mentions that once in a while, that watching Superman cry is jarring to him, and also with how his hair can't be cut with scissors ... How powerful are his tears? This is a topic not gone into because he doesn't cry.
One of my favorite episodes but also sad as hell. Griff comes back as a kryptonian, also remember Lex made the decision to have his father put through surgery also
@aldoguazzotti3215 seriously.. I also found her super attractive and I'm not usually into blondes her and the actress who played felicity in Arrow were great and good looking
A pretty good string of episodes lately. Season 5 was definitely one of the best of the series. Fine, Lexmas, and a few upcoming episodes are all really good. Can't wait to see the insights.
So the word cripple is a funny one. I am in a wheelchair and I use the term a lot, like my cripple parking and what not. With that said, I have noticed that the term "cripple" tends to be an "it's our word" situation. Also the Santa thing I really liked it. Fun fact, Santa is a real person in the DC Universe. He is a friend of Batman's.. Yes he is the real magical Santa and if I remember right, also the saint.
Annette was so smart for talking to Glover saying the show needed him. It really did to see how Lex became the villain. And Lionel knows that Lex will surpass him, he knows Lex is going to try and rule the world and there's nothing he can do, but prepare him and put him through tests and fire to make him strong...so Lex will be ready to face all the evil people he's going to have to go up against to be the top dog. And it just makes Smallville, even tho it's about Clark, one of the greatest Lex stories ever told. And Micheal just kills it. You see Lex slowly become the villain through the seasons. As a Superman fan, that's just gold and to see it in live action with Micheal's acting. It's so rare, we will probably never see anything like it again
Of course Glover is part of what DC company needs despite of enjoy hating Lionel for blackmailing😂, but is part of smallville family, since he was Enigma(the Riddler.❔) Batman TAS
I always enjoyed this episode. I think Kristin did a great job portraying a mom which must of been fun yet interesting since it probably felt new to her.
Interesting enough, in the last scene when Lex is talking about power in the hospital room, his face is half dark, and half light. And before he makes his final declaration, he turns to face away. He turn into the darkness, not into the light side. Very clever setup and inference.
I really loved everything about Lex's journey in this episode. Michael was phenomenal. Anyone who was raised in the presence of an abusive parent can relate to this episode in some way too. That constant battle of trying to be the opposite of the abusive parent. The other parent always pushing you to make better choices. And the point in which someone chooses to stop fighting their toxic inherited genes because they've just endured too much pain.
The parallels of Clark's story in real time and Lex's story in a coma really gpt to me. Clark, being the good guy, and talking santa off the ledge, but then you have Lex, close to talking himself off the ledge, but dives. I freaking feel for Lex. If he had just a tiny bit of honesty and support from the Kents and his father, he could have been a hero ( he has always been a hero, but always with a selfish motive). This episode highlights the Ebenezer scrooge and the light hearted christmas theme. Job well done dudes. I could talk about this for hours.
Great episode. It's so tragic because Lex really had friends that really liked him and were so proud of him for not following in his evil dad's footsteps. And knew he was going to have a much better life. And it's sad because even though the dream gave him a push, Lex is really the one who threw it all away for his love of power. And he hasn't fully turned yet, but the seed has been planted
This is one of my favorite episodes out of the entire series. I watch it every Christmas! I love being able to see the different side to lex and there’s always just this heartbreaking element to it, no matter how many times I watch it. I love everyone being so proud of him, and in a way, I think that was what he was searching for all along, to be cared for and loved. It makes me think back to that scene of him when he’s younger and no one came to his birthday party. You just want to give him a big hug! 😂❤ Thanks for the amazing performances everyone! Love the show and talkville!
This is such a great episode. The podcast included, there was so much heart and meaning in the performances and I loved your guys insight. Thanks guys! You are awesome
I love this episode so hard, but I get a visceral reaction whenever I see Chloe's hair extensions. I have no idea what they talk about at the Christmas tree lot because I'm always too busy staring at her hair lol
Watching this podcast is awesome. Nostalgic too for sure. Made me have to rewatch the whole series as a fan I've watched that series 1-10 at least 100 times. If not more.
I just recently found TalkVille - and I'm totally hooked. Lexmas might be my favorite episode in the entire series of Smallville. I think a lot of people - myself included - can relate to what Lex is going through... We are faced with choices that ultimately changes our entire future lives. For the better or for the worse. It's easy to make the choice that's less painful, to avoid being sincere and vulnerable and close to people, because the pain of losing this wonderful life, the people you love so much... it's beyond devastating. The more you allow your heart to feel love, the more it hurts if or when you lose it.
48:06 Interesting line of thought. We know that someone close to Clark has to die. That was Jor-El's promise. We know from Reckoning that it's either Lana or Jonathan. If Lex makes the right choices, Jonathan lives... but then Lana is doomed. So Lex's dream really could have been a possible future. Although I'm always a bit mad about Lilian that she shows Lex a future where he made the right choices, but doesn't show him the future where he made all the wrong choices and where that will lead him. Would have been more fair with Lex to make the ultimate choice between the two fates if he actually knew where each of them leads.
In this episode Lex finally gets, at least temporarily, everything he longed for: love, friendship, and respect. For all his money and power, his biggest needs were everything he couldn’t buy.
This is one of those episodes I was waiting to be talked about. Lexmas is one of the best episodes of the series. The ending is tragic because we're rooting for Lex for 5 and half years and you realize that there is no turning back after this. He's determined to make sure that he can control everything he can incliding manipulating his the election to win. That was a detail that wasn't really talked about. Lex was willing to try and ruin the character of a man he has admired so that he can win. That the lowest of the lows. This episode is 3 roses 🌹🌹🌹
It occurs to me watching this that Lex's descent into darkness here is a direct opposite to Clark's. Lex wants to control his destiny by attaining more power, which is ultimately a futile ambition in life, while Clark starts with power and eventually learns that he can't control everything. He accepts his loved ones will eventually die and there's nothing he can do about that. 'All those things I can do. All those powers... and I couldn't save him'. Great episode and loved hearing your guys' thoughts.
This a great episode. I can easily replay the whole episode in my head. This was such a great podcast episode to go over and for Michael to talk this through with everyone was great. This was the most empathetic I was for Lex in the entire series
🌹🌹🌹 "Lexmas" "We Luthors are made of pretty tough and definitely expensive material." We can go through several great Lex Luthor moments like in "Shattered", "Onyx", but "Lexmas" is just another masterclass in acting. It's only because of Rosenbaum's brilliant portrayal of this badly tortured soul that further cements him as a favourite character villain across TV and film. His acting in this episode was simply awe-inspiring in an emotional aspect. In some ways, it reminds of Nic Cage's movie "The Family Man" except the fact the ending to this episode was chilling, dark and tragic at the same time. This episode was great on so many levels from the Christmas theme, the light heartedness of the B-storyline involving "Santa Clark" (kind of out there but atleast it embraces the holiday spirit), and finally to Lex's tragic spiral. A major turning point for the character and pivotal for the series as whole as he takes a firm dive to the dark side. Even though Lex had a deep resentment for his father in both scenarios (in the dream and the present reality), I found it interesting in this episode how it gives another hint that ultimately, it was Lionel's influence that consumed him against the mother's wishes in the battle for his soul. One monologue that defines the character of Lex Luthor and the acceptance of his destiny: "Much like Ebenezer Scrooge, I realise all I want is to live happily ever after... And you know what the secret to living happily ever after is?... Power... Money and Power" **Chills** The look and that delivery gave me chills! There's only one Lex Luthor and his name is Michael Rosenbaum!
YES! I've been waiting for this episode of TalkVille to discuss and dissect one of my ALL TIME favorite episodes of Smallville! As a massive fan of Frank Capra, specifically It's a Wonderful Life, I watch this episode every Christmas, like any other classic Christmas special - right alongside Charlie Brown, Rudolph, and the Grinch.
This episode you can read so much into the characters and what they are feeling, that is what makes it great. This a is a perfect example of the relationships we have. It shows not only the love Lex craves, it shows how our dream effect our real life and how we choose our paths in life over hypothetical fantasies. Lex chooses to fight for the relationships he wants when he gets back to reality. The B plot with Clark and SC is perfect it’s rounding out a very dark and ultimately changing pace in the series. Clark is the positivity and you see his character change as well, more into a super hero for the world.
Rewatching this episode, I am 100% sure that watching this episode as a kid, it cemented my ideal for multi colors Christmas lights in a farm house during Christmas, which my Gf hates 😂
all the talk about feeling like it's not possible for me to ever get what I want and nothing will ever work out and feeling destined to be alone really resonated with me because that's exactly how I feel. Made me take a step back and realize I'm not happy in my own life because I'm holding myself back
Easily one of the best episodes. Reminds me of 2000 The Family Man starring Nicholas Cage. The take away from this episode is Power or lack there of for Lex. He was powerless to save Lana which he was reminded of by Lionel. Lex didn’t like the feeling of being powerless and rather than give happiness a chance he would rather give that up, than having power. Love the podcast, keep it up!!!
20:30 Michael performance in the alternate and the cast in special holiday gave him praise and proud the vulnerable side🙂↕️just felt tragic Michael proved his emotion and when going thru losing Lana repeating itself from his past again became a less fortunate too accept, lillian made the alternate version less clearer in lex’s view of having loving family own and yet losing close too he just had again hurts..😞 when didn’t have power too save and when cut woke up back to the hospital back to his dark lex👨🏻🦲👿 self just sad💔
This is Lex’s ‘Anakin choose the Dark Side’ moment. Look at the parallels: - Anakin loses his mother and it’s a source of pain - Anakin grows up without loving reinforcement (because Jedi are not squishy) - Anakin dreams his wife Padme dies - so Anakin wants the power of life and death to save her. This Anakin gives himself to the dark side. -Lex sees that he needs money and power to protect his loved ones. I don’t think Lex was hopeless at the end. I think he was now determined to get Lana AND he wants the power to protect her. Yes, it was always about power. Note Revenge of the Sith was in 2005. Lexmas came out that same year. Coincidence?
I only knew Michael from Smallville and always thought of him as a serious actor. After watching this episode, I was so pleasantly surprised by his comedic chops. His comedic timing was so spot on. When he did his own show, Impastor I was blown away, and to this day, I am still waiting for season 3, lol. Awesome job, Michael!
Seriously! I did hear rumors how funny he was on set, but never thought of him as a funny guy until impaster! Then when I heard he was the host of this podcast, I’m like man what an addition to Smallville! Making my favorite show even better! Now, rewatching seeing him in scenes, it makes it even more enjoyable knowing how hilarious he is lol
One of my favorite episodes, as well. This episode shook me when I saw it and made me reflect on my own issues with loss. My mother would pass away a couple years after this episode aired, and at the time, I was angry that she was ill. I focused on the time I'd lose with her rather than the time I had. Lex can't accept a reality where he's done the right thing but is only truly happy briefly. Instead, he thinks he can have it all and avoid loss entirely. He ends up with nothing. It's almost Shakespearean. I think I also agree with Michael that Lex *doesn't* believe in himself. He might seem sure of his choices and his agenda, but ultimately, it all stems from his lack of faith in himself and the person he is.
Just wanted to pop in and say, this episode is the best example of why Lex resonated w me the most of all the characters. I feel like he would have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, if he were an actual person. I was diagnosed years after this show started, becoming well read in my brain hell. His upbringing and subsequent behaviors and seeming thought processes, the way he handles his trauma accumulated throughout the series. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me
I don't like hearing the words by Bryce, "Clark lying again." Let's be clear about Clark/Superman. He is good. Lying is not something he does with malice or evil intention. He doesn't want to lie, but he was raised to lie about his identity because, ultimately, he knows he has to protect those he loves AND protect himself from potential enemies who would use him as a weapon. Even though Clark wanted to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, his Kryptonian instincts were always spot on concerning who he confided in. Also, Lex has always had a dark side. Even before he met Clark. Just because you've had many bad things happen to you in life, it doesn't mean you have to take that path to the dark side. I know from experience.
yes so true! why is everyone on the "Lex is good" bandwagon all the time? I think it's pretty clear throughout the show that if Clark had confided in Lex, lex would've used him as a tool to get what he wants and step up to lionel. let's not pretend that lex turned evil because of Clark, he always had the choice and as this episode proves, he continually makes the choice to go down the dark path..
This is an awesome episode. To me, it was the first episode that focused on Clark very little. I rate it a 2 1/2 roses. My favorite scene was Lex waking up with Lana. And the main interest in this episode was that no matter how good the show was, Lex is ALWAYS going to go BAD. They made Lex a good guy for most of the show. And that was never done before. But in the end, they stayed true to the comic and everything SUPERMAN. At least everything that I have seen. Great Podcast, guys. And thank you.
I just found out about this podcast a month ago and I've finally caught up! I loved Smallville. I grew up with this show and I was so excited when I found this podcast. Keep up the great work Michael, Tom, Ryan and Bryce! This show is 3 roses :)
I think having Santa Claus in the episode just added to the magic of the Smallville universe. We know superman is magical, a myth, and then putting Santa in confirmed the Smallville mythos. It made it more magical
They should have invited Kristin Kreuk for this episode instead of inviting her for that dumb vampire episode. This was the first episode where we got a glimpse of the Lana/Lex romantic relationship
The question of Clark getting into all the different houses comes down to Clark constantly getting through Luthor security at Luthor Manor and Luthor Corp. facilities. He’s been preparing for the role of Santa his whole life!
Great episode. Both show and podcast. I have a few shows and films that I put on every year to get in the spirit, whilst wrapping presents or whatever and Lexmas is always there. The Kent house at Christmas, talk about decoration goals!! 😂
Side note - Michael sells the Lexmas script so that tells you what kind of impact this episode has on fans. This episode really deserves the three roses that all of them gave it.
My uncle has been paralyzed from the waist down since he was 18 years old, He's now about 80 years old. He never complained about it and he is the most generous person I ever met.
I was always of the opinion that Lex chose the path of power to get everything he wants. He went to his dad for the money and influence to find a way to save Lana. He wouldn't have to if HE was the one with the power and influence. His choice was simply the best of both worlds.

I think that the point of bringing Santa into it is that Superman is an inspiration to everyone, including the person who is a symbol of hope to everyone else.
Santa is canon in DC
@@alexneffCanon, and OP. Santa loves trolling Darkseid 🤣
I think Talkville's addition of inserting fan interaction (videocall and phone questions) makes the podcast more genuine and organic.
glad you're digging it
I completely agree! 👍👍
Still love when Al gets on and he is so familiar with the show and specific episodes. Every call with Al and Miles is so good to watch
Ryan’s involvement and Bryce’s write ups really add an extra layer to the podcast
Yes. Great editing
Head canon Lex and Clark rekindled their friendship when they joined forces to save the world years in the future
@fahidhussain2780 In at least one alternate timeline/universe it's got to be true. 😭
@@ageekyblonde i think it’s possible with the Arrowverse crossover episode when Clark heard Lex was in town his reaction was a positive one too
One of the most iconic Smallville episodes.
They all played Well in this episode imo
@@KingKidGoku32794 Yep. Michael especially. My point about Glover is that he was wasted for the entirety of season 4, so seeing him do more stuff and have more scenes with Michael in season 5 was one of the definite improvements they did in S5.
I love this episode they are awesome 🎉❤
so glad we finally got here
Iconic?
This episode for me is in the top 1. When the decisive moment arrives and everything points to the most common and cliché direction, it takes a turn in another direction with no return for the great Lex, reinterpreting all morals and ethics as Nietzsche said, beautiful episode
I'm usually not big on Holiday episodes (except for Halloween ones) but I love Lexmas it's definitely one of the best episodes
I'm glad I'm not the only one who did this!! I leave to work at 5am sunday-wednedays
This is how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader in Star Wars. He dreamed about his wife Padme dying, and this was the turning point of him turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader.
Yeah but this was done well.

Here we are! A classic Smallville moment with Lex!
This is a topic not gone into because he doesn't cry.
almost there :/
@@TalkVillePodcast I Know, con sarn it! 😭
This was definitely THE point where Lex starts his turn to evil.
One of my favorite episodes but also sad as hell. Griff comes back as a kryptonian, also remember Lex made the decision to have his father put through surgery also
I loved Smallville, but I also love all the "industry" stories, perspectives and trivia from Talkville.
The disappointed mom in the reflection was perfect. Like he had his whole It's a Wonderful Life sort of moment and chose the wrong lesson.
Lex, Lionel, and , Chloe is what kept this show going all this time, those 3 are the best t.v. actors and actress I've ever seen on any show
sad how it ended, but Allison Mack is one of the best actresses I have ever see
Big chloe and Lionel fan
@@aldoguazzotti3215💔 if only she didn’t get into with Raniere’s following racketeer😑
@@jeffh06 i really hope she can have some kind of redemption.
You know it's a good episode when different people have different interpretations and none are exactly wrong. That's just good TV 🙌
Remember that in a later episode of the near death experience serum Lex's mom shows up again and reprimands him for not making the right choice.
He didn’t throw it away. He wanted the power and money to save his love one.
My absolute favorite episode and Rosey´s number 1 performance. As Welling said, they all brought their A-game, but Rosey crushed it!
One of the better episodes of Smallville.
Lexmas is one of my favorites. Rewatched it at the beginning of this Summer.
This is such a great episode. The podcast included, there was so much heart and meaning in the performances and I loved your guys insight. Thanks guys! You are awesome
I love this episode so hard, but I get a visceral reaction whenever I see Chloe's hair extensions. I have no idea what they talk about at the Christmas tree lot because I'm always too busy staring at her hair lol
haha did not see that coming. hilarious
Hands down the best episode of the show. Tragic and incredibly well-made.
Clark went in through the windows. Suspension of disbelief 😅
Merry Christmas! Don't mind that the latches on your windows are all busted! Hope you notice and get that fixed before you get a home invasion.
Thanks for S05E09 and Merry Lexmas! 🥂🥂🍻🍻
Smallville did some of the best "what if" episodes ever made. This is definitely one.
I think Lexmas is a vision of the future like A Christmas Carol. His mother standing next to him and then fading away means it’s not a dream.
In this episode Lex finally gets, at least temporarily, everything he longed for: love, friendship, and respect.
For all his money and power, his biggest needs were everything he couldn’t buy.
Yep, Great episode, the definite start of lex embracing the dark side but not the completion, that's the last episode with Lionel
One of the best episodes of season 5
🌹🌹🌹
"Lexmas"
"We Luthors are made of pretty tough and definitely expensive material."
We can go through several great Lex Luthor moments like in "Shattered", "Onyx", but "Lexmas" is just another masterclass in acting.
One monologue that defines the character of Lex Luthor and the acceptance of his destiny:
"Much like Ebenezer Scrooge, I realise all I want is to live happily ever after... And you know what the secret to living happily ever after is?... Power... Money and Power"
**Chills** The look and that delivery gave me chills!
There's only one Lex Luthor and his name is Michael Rosenbaum!
This is definitely one of the best episodes of Smallville. And it's always fun when Al stops in for a chat!
The good Grinch, right? AKA the one from 2018.

@@tom_reagan You really thought I was a Zoomer from one joke? That's hilarious.
Look at the parallels:
- Anakin loses his mother and it’s a source of pain
- Anakin grows up without loving reinforcement (because Jedi are not squishy)
- Anakin dreams his wife Padme dies - so Anakin wants the power of life and death to save her.
Coincidence?
alll downhill from here ha
This is executed so much better tho
In a small role he has a pretty funny scene in the movie Bringing Down the House with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah.
One of my favorite episodes, I watch it every Christmas
Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me
Clark and Santa on the roof is a top Superman moment
Nice shoutout to JL:Comfortable & Joy episode. I try to watch that episode as much as possible in December every year.
@@linamahmood4865 100% agree! And Clark withheld his secret from his other friends too, but it didn't cause them to turn evil.

Santa is canon in DC
Santa is an actual character in the DC comics.
Cool! I didn't realize that! 👍

This is one of my favorite episodes! 1 because I love Christmas and 2 because I feel like this is what set in motion Lex wanting everything Clark had!
I was always of the opinion that Lex chose the path of power to get everything he wants. He went to his dad for the money and influence to find a way to save Lana. He wouldn't have to if HE was the one with the power and influence. His choice was simply the best of both worlds.
